Roman would have been content to pine for the cute gloomy guy in the stage crew forever.

Well, not forever. He’s been working up his courage to talk to him, okay! It’s just… Virgil is so handsome. And he talks with the other crew guys about bands that Roman isn’t familiar with. And whenever he takes off his hoodie to do something, Roman gets to see his arms and he ends up forgetting what he’s doing.

Roman does pay attention to the names of the bands Virgil mentions. He’s listened to their music, and it is pretty good, but he has no idea how to use that to talk to Virgil. He tried approaching him one day, but at the last minute, he decided that “Hey Virgil, I noticed you like Green Day. I think they’re great too.” was not a good enough way to start talking to Virgil.

So… Roman has kind of just spent this entire time tiptoeing around Virgil and trying not to embarrass himself whenever he sees him.

He should have known that tactic wouldn’t work forever.

But he couldn’t have known this would happen.

His own face—his own body is staring back at him, eyes wide in shock. And Roman, unless he’s changed back in the ten seconds since he saw his reflection in the mirror and screamed, is in… Virgil’s body.

“What…” Virgil whispers, in Roman’s voice. “What is this? What’s going on?”

“I—I don’t know,” Roman says. He can’t even think straight. He’s… somehow in Virgil’s body. The guy he’s been dreaming about for weeks. And Virgil is in his. Oh god. And Virgil, the guy of Roman’s dreams, is standing right in front of Roman. Talking to Roman.

“I. I need to sit down,” Roman manages to say. Virgil sits down next to him, arms crossed and a small frown on his face. It’s a very Virgil posture and it’s really weird to see it with Roman’s body. Hell, it’s weird enough seeing his own face out of a photograph or a mirror.

Virgil opens his mouth to talk, but then the door opens and both of them jump. It’s Valerie, who waves at them.

“See you tomorrow Roman! Oh, and hey there... Virgil, right?”

“Bye,” Roman says.

She closes the door and Virgil quickly leans over to grab his hand. “Look,” he whispers. Butterflies flutter in Roman’s chest, but he pays attention. “I don’t know what happened to… make us like this. But if we can’t figure out a way to change back...”

Roman’s eyes widen. He still has to practice and perform. This is his job. “Ah… can you sing?”

“What?” Virgil says, moving away from Roman with a confused look on his face.

Roman waves his hands, trying to explain the thought that just occurred to him. “If you can sing, then it won’t be a problem.”

“This is a problem!” Virgil says.

“Yes, but my rehearsals and your work won’t suffer while we try to fix it,” Roman says. He’s still nervous about talking to Virgil for the first time ever, but he’s an actor. Improvisation is what he does, no matter how nervous he is.

Virgil looks at Roman incredulously. Then he sighs. “Fine, whatever. We’ll talk to the others tomorrow about this. And…” he pauses and looks away from Roman. For once, Roman is glad that he’s able to blush so easily because his face turns a faint shade of red. Virgil is flustered.

“Yeah, I can sing,” Virgil mutters.

Patton’s bed is a messy mound of stuffed animals and pillows and more blankets than one man probably needs. Logan is sort of surprised not to see a bunch of Patton’s cardigans and sweaters and hoodies on it, but he sees them heaped in a big pile on Patton’s desk chair in the corner of the room. There’s so much to see here, but he can’t stop looking at Patton’s bed.

The bed that… they’re going to share. Oh god, Logan doesn’t know if he’s ready for this. Patton is definitely just doing this to be a good friend. And Logan is going to accidentally say something, or… or start cuddling with him, or something. Yes, they’ve cuddled before (Logan’s mind going numb with happiness and trepidation every time) but this is different.

Because Logan’s staying the night, and instead of sleeping on the couch like he thought would happen, he’s going to be… right there. Sleeping right next to Patton.

Patton is moving the stuffed animals off his bed, but he’s lining them up on the floor so they’re watching the bed. They’re going to be watching Logan all night. They’re just stuffed animals, but there’s something about having three dozen pairs of adorable plastic eyes fixed on you.

“I’m sorry again, about spilling the ice cream on the couch,” Patton says. He finishes with his stuffed animals and grabs some clothes from the bed.

“It’s quite alright,” Logan says. He’s not going to be able to survive this.

Patton pats his shoulder comfortingly. “I’m going to change in the bathroom. You can change in here, and just come on into the bathroom so you can brush your teeth once you’re done.”

He leaves Logan in the bedroom. Logan is doomed. He looks around the room, taking in all the things that he imagined would be in Patton’s bedroom and all the things he’s sort of surprised at. Framed pictures, hand-drawn artwork, stacks of books—and Logan freezes as he sees the book he gave Patton last week, open and with a heart-shaped bookmark in it.

Logan’s heart thuds in his chest. What could that mean?

He changes into his pajamas quickly and grabs his toothbrush and toothpaste. The bathroom door is ajar, but he still knocks, since he knows he would not be able to handle seeing Patton with his shirt—or pants—off.

Patton opens the door with a smile. “You don’t have to knock if the door’s open, Logan,” he says. He’s wearing soft-looking cat print pajamas. It’s so cute, and Patton wearing it only makes it even cuter. Logan physically aches with how badly he wants to hold Patton and kiss him.

Logan is absolutely not going to survive this night without accidentally confessing his feelings or making a complete fool of himself. Probably both.

One of these days, Central is going to forget to make the weekly call to their research station. And Roman is going to take that as a call to action and drag Logan on an epic quest across the galaxy.

Logan honestly would be excited to go on some epic quest with Roman. That’s the whole reason he’s here, in space. The progress they’re making with the plant and animal life on Keinia is slow, and Logan had to admit within the first few weeks that it wasn’t quite what he imagined.

He and Roman both still take the research very seriously. However, the longer they stay out here, the harder it is for Logan to immediately shoot down Roman’s wild fantasies about leaving the station. Lately, they’ve been spending the weeks in between Central’s calls exploring more of the planet. That almost satisfies their desires to just get out and do something.

Logan leaves the station early, as usual, to find Roman out in the nearby field surrounded by a small flock of Keinian songbirds.

Not exactly songbirds, but they’re close enough. Roman keeps calling them songbirds and Logan has to admit it fits. The little things have two sets of wings, long tails, and can sing in tune with Roman.

“You’re not waiting for their call?” Roman asks as Logan sits down next to him. One of the songbirds comes over to perch on Logan’s knee.

Logan shakes his head. “They never call until later anyway. It’s better to spend my time out here.”

Roman smiles and pets the one of the smaller songbirds gathered around him. “What if we just… don’t respond today?”

Logan eyes him, and Roman keeps talking quickly.

“No, think about it! Remember two months ago when we missed the call? When we called back, they said they had already checked us off!”

“Yes, but doesn’t that concern you?” Logan says. “That they would forget--”

“The shipments still come every month!” Roman says. “Whether or not we’re here to receive them. We could just… leave the station and explore more of Keinia! I know you want to!”

Logan does want to. He wants to explore so much and learn so much but…

“If we miss the call today, and Central doesn’t call us back, then we’ll go,” Roman says. “Just for two weeks. Long enough to explore that nice lake past the mountains.”

Logan absentmindedly starts petting the songbird as he thinks about it. He has been thinking about this for so long. He just…

“Okay.” Logan says.

“Yes!!” Roman shouts, and the songbirds all fly up into the air at his sudden exclamation. Logan watches them all fly around him and smiles.
