teteh i am very curious about something, mind to share what you see in icemav? i just watched top gun (86) and i dont see any chemistry between them, i mean their interaction maybe only less than 7/140 minutes? i actually so surprised to see the movie (not in a bad way) maybe because i read your au first, they were so different from my imagination. or maybe is it because i havent seen the maverick (22)? looking forward to you au btw teh, it's a new experience for me hethe

fyi: aku nonton top gun (1986) pertama kali april 2021 and didn't see the appeal either but look at where i am now. so technically it took me a year to really get their dynamics and i don't blame you or anyone for not getting it at the first try. but boy is it a wonderful place once you get up here. and watching maverick (2022) does help, so if you haven't had a chance to do one this is me encouraging you. please do.

the reason we both didn't get icemav at the first try is, i think, because we thought they end with you can be my wingman anytime. what makes icemav really attractive to my eyes now is what happens after bullshit, you can be mine.

to me, the attraction is what happens after top gun, which of course is not included in the canon because the writers are cowards, and that alone makes everything a hundred percent more fun: did maverick actually teach at topgun? did ice join him? or did they separate after topgun? but did they ever see each other again? what happens then? maverick (2022) implies that ice and mav have been friends for 36 years. i don't want to spoil the story for you but that was pretty intense relationship. that wasn't what you call a platonic one. what the fuck happened during those years. so many possibilities.

so with this headcanon in mind, to sum it up, what makes icemav attractive to me, are:

the fact that they could be rival to friends to hts to lovers to exes to hts again to lovers to husbands

they're just two guys battling daddy issues finding comfort and recognizing themselves through the other (if you haven't read ice's backstory by the lord and savior himself val edwards kilmer)

LDR ambassadors (mav stay di topgun instructing, ice terbang kemana tau—and it's the 80s, imagine the letters and the payphones and the i miss you i miss you i miss you)

hidden relationship. it's them against the world. there was this law called don't ask, don't tell up until 2010 where it's technically illegal for non-straight people to be in the us military. imagine secret meetings, secret touches and hallway kisses. imagine the desperation.

if you've seen maverick (2022) you'd know they are quite literally bradley bradshaw's godparents. say it with me. they're found family.

i'm not kidding when i say topgun (the academy) is a literal cikulum kintil. ultimate cinlok location. cikulum kintil is my symbol for escapism, for summer romance, that a place could change you as a person. like you went in and got out of it a completely different person. topgun (the academy) matches all these criterias.

all of these are very dulcetines-coded... daddy issues is parent trap... LDR is parent trap all over again... sneaking around is pas de deux... parenting is parent trap... cikulum kintil... et cetera. if you know, you know.

so yeah you won't be able to find the attraction IN top gun (1986) because the fun to me happens AFTER top gun (1986). and it's not like in kpop rpf where shippers quite literally depend on to the idols' real-life interactions, collecting "crumbs", and that a "ship" can only be valuable if the company markets them as a couple. i completely understand the culture shock: this one does NOT have anything at all other than what's shown in the movie, and definitely requires imagination and a lot of talking with other people. and reading other people's interpretation and headcanons.

it was actually a fanart by a friend of mine that inspired me to localize the characters and write a socmed!au for them <3 again, collaborative fandom effort. it's what makes it so alive.
