How does Restoration work? Are there different spells to cauterize and disinfect?
It does depend on the type of restoration. The school lumps together many magical methods. Some spells that we call restoration for the sake of convenience are actually necromantic in nature! Oh yes, it’s true. There are some spells that stop the spread of necrosis by manipulating the dead flesh and by technicality, they are necromancy, though few would call them such when speak to commoners.
True restoration is similar to mysticism, manipulating the energies inherent in the body instead of focusing on external forces. While most think only of healing when they hear the name, it does not end at healing. It may dredge up forgotten memories. It may be used to form soul-shields. It may injure vampires, turn away the undead, and stop the sword from cutting you to the born.
And yes, of course, you may chase away disease and close wounds. Even in what we traditionally consider restoration (not all of which is technically restoration), there is great variety. You can persuade the body’s natural healing to accelerate. You can will a wound out of existence. You can reset a piece of flesh into becoming once again what it was a few minutes before and there is so much more.
Yes, there are spells to seal a wound with a flash of fire and more. There is magic to produce hot water to wash saws and clean soiled cloth. It is, however, more practical to use more mundane water as it has the same effect, though it is often dirty. Clean, boiling water is key to maintaining good public health. It drives away Peryite’s pestilence through the interaction between sacred flame and water which small devils cannot withstand. In many parts of the world, doctors do not clean their clothes and wash their hands and so many people die. I am thankful that when I was burned to a crisp, I was tended to by devotees of the Clockwork God.
It’s fascinating, really. I’ve never had much of an inclination towards it, I’m afraid, being as I’m…well, you know, some of us prefer plants and salves to trusting ourselves to strange mages.
