Fairies lived in the local forest. They cherished the villagers dearly and always rejoiced in their happiness. But then they saw that the whole village had gone mad, and preparations were already in full swing for a strange wedding. The fairies rushed to the very top of the mountain to ask God to end the madness.

А ещё в местном лесу жили феи. Они очень любили людей и всегда радовались за них. А тут вдруг увидели, что вся деревня сошла с ума и уже вовсю идут приготовления к странной свадьбе. И бросились феи на самую вершину горы, чтобы попросить Бога остановить людей от их безумства.

1. There's a mysterious very place in Serbia called Devil's Town. Wikipedia tells us that there's nothing mysterious there, just nature: minerals, rain, and wind sculpted the rocks into bizarre shapes. But who believes what's written in Wikipedia and school textbooks anyway! Once I stepped into a local tavern. Sitting by the fireplace, I shared some plum vodka with a local resident, who told me the real story about that amazing place.

Есть в Сербии таинственное место под названием Город Дьявола. В Википедии мы сможете прочитать, что там нет ничего таинственного, просто природа, соль земли, дожди и ветер придали скалам причудливые формы. Кто же верит тому что пишут в Википедии и школьных учебниках!

Однажды я заглянул в местную таверну и, сидя у очага, выпил сливовой водки с местным жителем, который рассказа мне настоящую правду об этом удивительном месте.

A terrible sight opened up to travelers who wandered into these places. Stone pillars stand in rows frozen in a strange festive procession.

12. And in the depths of the mountain ran deep mines. The Saxons mined ore for a king. When the flash turned everyone on the surface into stone, the miners were not harmed, but the exits from the mine were sealed by the heavenly fire. And now in the dead of night you can hear their groans and blows against the stone, begging for someone to free them. But no one will help them. The witch knew how to remove the spell, but she too turned into stone.

This is the true story of the Devil's City in Serbia.

А в глубине горы были шахты. Та саксонцы добывали руду для своего короля. Когда вспышка превратила в камень всех, кто был на поверхности, шахтёры не пострадали, но выходы из шахты был запаян небесным огнём. И теперь в тихую ночь можно слышать их стоны и удары о камень, так они просят помочь им выйти. Но никто им не поможет. Ведьма знала, как снять заклятие, но и она превратилась в камень.

Такова правдивая история про Город Дьявола в Сербии.

Every inhabitant remained standing like a stone pillar, frozen in the place where the flash caught them. Both men and women, both children and adults turned into stone idols.

Каждый житель остался стоять как каменные столб в том месте, где его застала вспышка. И мужчины и женщины, и дети и взрослые превратились в каменных истуканов.

8. On the wedding day, exactly at noon, a flash brighter than the Sun struck the foothills. In a second, the forest ceased to be, and the wedding participants turned to stone. Since then, according to folklore, the stones from this place should be left alone, since those who take them with them will also turn to stone

В день свадьбы, ровно в полдень, вспышка, «ярче Солнца», ударила по предгорьям. За секунду лес испарился, а участники свадьбы превратились в камни. С тех пор, согласно народному преданию, камни с этого места следует оставлять в покое, так как те, кто возьмут их с собой, тоже превратятся в камень
