Canadian artillerymen from the 10th Battery of the 2nd Field Artillery Regiment go in to action - Torella region of Italy - 30th Oct 1944
okay so i did not manage to finish my pirate au this week because it has gotten way out of hand but i decided to post this late little snippet for the Period Drama day for viralsweek!
Together, Hi and Shelton heaved the last of the sand into the pit, the trunk concealed several feet into the ground. “Finally.” Shelton let out a long breath. “At least the trunk itself was light enough to drag out here. I thought you were going to leave some gold for Ella?”
“Oh, Ella’s money isn’t in there.”
All three men stopped dead. “Pardon?” Hi asked.
“This chest was just a clue.”
Shelton let out another long breath, then said, “Are you fucking kidding me?”
“I’m leaving several clues for her. I hid the treasure weeks ago.”
“Then where the hell is it?”
“Nice try.”
“Seriously?”
“It’s in a place no one would ever think to find anything of mine,” Tory told them. “Ella will know where it is.”
“Your father’s house?” Ben guessed.
“Your husband’s property?” Shelton asked.
“A church,” Hiram said with a cackle, as though he’d ever stepped foot in one.
“Excellent guesses, all.” Tory led them down the beach. “Don’t trouble yourselves too much with it.”
Hiram was correct with his guess, but she had no intention of telling them the true location of the treasure. Not because she didn’t trust them - pirates had more honor than anyone, and she trusted her friends with her life - but because the chapel she had hidden Ella’s money in contained one of her most precious memories.

“I wouldn’t have pegged you as the devout kind,” Ella murmured. They sat on the stone floor in the front of the church in the soft gray of the early morning. Tory kept her ears open for the sound of the priest approaching, but he hadn’t made an appearance yet. The entire world seemed hushed, and Tory, who normally thrived in the noise and energy of her ship, felt content for once. Neither she nor Ella spoke with their chests - it would ruin the spell the silent morning had cast over them.
“I’m not,” Tory replied, a second too late. “But there’s something about this place… it feels like where my mother would pray sometimes, when I was a child.”
Ella nodded, and in the barely-there gray light she looked so beautiful that Tory could hardly stand it. “Mine wasn’t much for it. Getting married was the longest I spent in a church.”
“My stepmother made me go every week, but my elopement wasn’t recognized by any priest.” Tory breathed a silent laugh. “God rest our husbands’ souls.”
“I pray he accepts them into heaven,” Ella said, her smile matching Tory’s. “We’ll have hell to ourselves.”
“If we could find each other in the middle of the sea, we will find each other there.” Tory took her hand. “When it’s time to leave the ship, would you join me?”
“Of course.” Ella squeezed Tory’s hand with both of hers. “Not yet, though.”
“No.” Tory sighed. “But soon. The net’s starting to close in on us.” Their names were on wanted posters across the coast. Victoria Brennan and Ella Francis, the woman pirates. Objects of fascination and revulsion. Their time would run out if they continued this life. “We can make a life for ourselves somewhere else.” They were both dressed like women now, for once, to avoid detection during their landfall. When they had first been on the ship they had taken great pains to disguise themselves as men. When the secret inevitably came out, they could let down their hair, unbind their breasts, stop lowering their voices, but they still dressed like pirates. Here, now, they both looked so normal. She wondered what lives they could have led if fate had not set them on the road they now walked.
“I’ve been a man for over half of my life.” Ella tossed her hair. “I’ll be your lawfully wedded husband.”
“Oh, sure.”
“I mean it!” She sat up straight and held Tory’s hand over her heart. “Do you, Victoria, promise to have me in sickness and health, to honor, trust, and obey, until death do us part?”
Tory cackled. “Absolutely not.”
“But I do.” Ella cupped Tory’s face and gave her a long kiss. “There. It’s settled.”
Ella: Tory, you like... seeing anyone?
Tory: [heart pounding] No, why?
Ella: I dunno I just really think you'd benefit from seeing a therapist or something.

Kit: Where's Ella, Tory?
Tory: We just stepped out of the shower. She'll be down in a minute.
Kit: Alright li-listen, you guys can't go... did you just say we?
Tory: What?
Kit: Did you just say "we just stepped out of the shower"?
Tory: I said "she".
