Happy 25th bday to Boys For Pele, an album written by Tori Amos in 1995-1996 that has inspired me since then. The lyrics are sometimes obtuse, sometimes nonsensical, sometimes piercingly clear and poignant, and the improvisational, bombastic, explosive piano and harpsichord playing is virtuosic and breathtaking. The album is given and presented as metaphor. It’s not a diary, it’s not poetry, to me...it’s a sound painting. The lyrics are many times not about the words, but about the sound made by the word. The musical structures, the sexy-af left-hand one-woman drums and bass section, the fire and the deep wells of sorrow in the piano voices...this is a wild explosion of total and complete originality. Total commitment to the values of the artist. No compromise. Tori says no matter what you do or create, someone is always going to say you or your work are sh*t. But that part is meaningless. The point is, you have your interpretation of the universe and you have your own way of expressing it. Put it into the world and if people cut you down, ask them if they’re brave enough to put their souls in the arena to fight. If they’re not, don’t even look their way.
