The Arcane Adventure rode quiet on the evening tide, her black hull gliding over starlit waters with all the hush of a shadow slipping through a dream. The wind keened soft through her rigging, like some half-remembered tune, and Davos thought she almost sang. She was no loud-mouthed reaver’s ship, no Ironborn brute with a corpse-nailed prow and sails steeped in blood. She had none of their swagger, none of their stink.

No, this one had been forged of darker timber.

Her wood was black as jet, oiled to a shine beneath moonlight, yet dark enough to vanish when the night was thick. A small ship, yes, but not a frail one. Sleek and lean, sharp of hull, she danced betwixt reefs like a blade between ribs. Her masts bore steel hooks instead of bells, the sort of thing a woman might wear if she fancied knives more than necklaces.

Fitting, Davos mused, for a ship with a harpy carved into her bow.

Godsgrace lay yet days ahead, but already he could taste it on the wind.

Dust and salt and the promise of oranges.

Home.

But not yet.

Barefoot, he paced the length of her deck, his cloak fluttering loose behind him, the damp wood cool against his soles. It was late, and the crew had gone quiet beneath the canvas canopy, their labors done, their voices low. The sun had drowned, but the sea still held its warmth. Wrapped in wool and shadow, Davos moved like smoke.

He found him at the rail.

Toron Greyjoy, broad-shouldered and still as stone, staring out where black sky met blacker sea. The stars had swallowed the horizon.

Davos leaned against the railing beside him. No greeting passed between them. Just the hush. The sort of quiet men learn to live with after they’ve drawn blood from each other, not with blades, but with words sharp enough to scar.

The waves kissed the hull.

“Could’ve been worse, being marooned here,” Davos said at last. “Better than a stone cell, I’d wager. Never cared much for damp walls and rats.”

The harpy loomed at the prow, wings outstretched, talons bared. She caught the moonlight like a blade catches blood.

“I’ve taken a liking to your harpy,” he said after a time. “Ugly thing. Bit of this, bit of that. Doesn’t make sense when you look too close. But she holds.”

The wind tugged at his cloak. He let it.

“I suppose you thought the same of me. Gaudy. Spoiled. All silk and silver.” His fingers skimmed the rail. “But here I am. Didn’t die in that cell. Didn’t break on the tide.”

He tilted his head, just enough to glimpse the side of Toron’s face. The man was all angles and shadows with nose like a blade and a mouth that hadn’t known a smile in days.

“You were right about one thing,” Davos said. “My father wouldn’t have done this. He’d have bowed, poured the Arbor gold, smiled his painted grin, and traded our pride for a seat nearer the throne.” His mouth curved, though not kindly. “It’s well he’s dead. He’d have hated this ship.”

Why he said it aloud, he could not say. Perhaps just to feel it settle in his own mouth, solid and true. Ferris Allyrion had haunted the council chamber like a shade, louder in absence than presence. But out here, the ghosts had no teeth. Out here, only the living mattered.

“I’m told you fought well. On that wretched little isle.” He let the words come soft. “Got Edrick out. Got me out.” A pause. “You didn’t have to.”

His eyes closed briefly, lids heavy with salt and sleep. He did not look at Toron.

“I don’t like owing debts. But I’m no fool. I know when I do.”

The harpy’s shadow danced over the sea, her wings long and lean. Davos watched her. One hand curled tight round the rail.

“You once told me I was playing at lordship.” His lips twitched. “You weren’t wrong. I was. Still am, maybe. But if you’re ready to stop playing at piracy… perhaps we can both stop pretending.”

An offer, in the shape of a truce. Or a truce, in the shape of a warning.

He let the silence stretch between them, taut as a drawn bowstring.

“I’ll reconsider some of the Greyjoy terms. Not all. But enough. If you send me a proposal worth the ink. One I can lay before my bannermen without shame. Make it clever. You have the wit for it.”

And with that, he pushed away from the rail, rings catching the last of the moonlight as he moved.

“I’ll be below,” he said over his shoulder. “Try not to sink us before we reach shore.”

𖤓┊⟩» It's been a while since their last raid, Dalton saw how his men slowly soften and became a bunch of drunken sailors. Fortunately for them, soon they would have the opportunity to attack again. He knew one of them missed the assaults more than anyone, his own son Toron.

That's why today he summoned him to the Raven. Dalton's flagship was far away from any eavesdroppers. Perfect for planning without distractions. He waited on the port until Toron's figure appeared, Dalton couldn't resist the urge to hug him. So he did.

Dalton guided him to his cabin with a smile on his face. He waited until they were inside the room, surrounded by candles and maps, to speak. Nightfall was resting on the side of the table.

—There will be a ship coming out of Pentos in two months, bound for the old city of Volantis. A trading galley named the Black Crane. Inside the ship there is a Valyrian tome which details the rites of a ceremony long lost after the Doom. The Celtigars wish to acquire this book and offer to pay greatly. —Dalton open one of his many maps and extended it over the table. It detailed to the narrow sea and it already depicted the routes the Black Crane could use. Dalton traced the lines with his fingers. —The Black Crane will be guarded by two Volantine dromonds. The Volantine captains will not expect an ambush. They lack discipline. And you will be the cause of their demise.

As Gysella made her way towards Toron's ship, she could only think of two things: her anger towards her parents, and how Toron would react to what she was going to tell him.

What had been an offhand comment on her mother's part was now a life shattering reality for Gysella. Lady Lysa Blacktyde, her beloved mother, had spoken briefly of a potential marriage for Gysella. Her mother was known to be an adequate match-maker, after all, it was not surprising she would be looking for a suitable husband for her eldest child who was of marriageable age now.

But Gysella already had her perfect match, and her parents clearly did not seem to think so. What she thought was an unspoken agreement between her parents, Dalton Greyjoy, and Toron Greyjoy turned out to be a false delusion she created in her head, in hopes of being Lady Greyjoy one day. Her mother had done the unthinkable in suggesting that Gysella marry Rodrick Greyjoy, not Toron, as she always assumed.

'He will be good for you, darling. He is all of the soft parts that you are not, you are all of the strong parts that he is not. It will be a good match.' Her mothers words rang through her head over and over again. She had not responded to these words, only walked away in deep frustration. How could she say such a thing?

Gysella was fond of Rodrick, but only as a brother. She had believed he would be her brother one day, never her husband. He was not a suitable match for her, that much was clear, and the fact that he was a second son was slight from her parents she never thought she would have to suffer. She would never be Lady Blacktyde, they had made that much clear, but she believed they would at least marry her to the heir of some house. The heir to house Greyjoy, she had suspected. Give her some power she could hold. She even held affections for Toron, though, that was not something she was sure her parents were aware of.

The slight of it all was too much to bear, and Gysella had enough. Toron would surely know what to do, she believed. She made her way onto the Cursed Emerald, rehearsing what she would say to Toron. She held a pot of soup she had made just before she decided to come visit him. It was surely better than whatever food he had eaten in Kings Landing, she decided. It consisted of new spices she had been trying out, vegetables, and clams and scallops. It was a new favorite of hers, and whether Toron would like it or not, she was not concerned.

She opened the door of his cabin, knowing he was in it. She had not seen him in a long time due to his trip to Kings Landing to witness the funeral of King Viserys along side the Coronation of Queen Rhaenyra. Why he wanted to witness this, she was not sure. She had stayed behind to run the family duties, but she had missed her Greyjoy companions more than she would say aloud.

Gysella saw him and gave him a great smile. "Toron, it is good to see you back home." She set her pot down on a table and kissed him on the cheek. A gesture she did for every friend of hers. "I am sure you missed me terribly, as well as my food. I have brought soup for you, so go on and eat it. It is better than anything you could have possibly tried in Kings Landing." Smirking at her own words, she took a seat next to him, trying to collect her thoughts before she broke the news.

Her eyes trailed over him, examining every inch of the man next to her. He had seemed to be unchanged, the same as when she had seen him last. But everything felt different now. "I do hope you tell me all about your adventures in the capital. But that is not what I am here to talk about. Toron, my parents, and potentially your father, have gone mad." She smoothed out her red dress, preparing for what she had to say next. She shot Toron a look of seriousness.

"They speak about betrothing me to your brother, Rodrick."

A Mini Meta Because I’m Salty

Dalton Greyjoy, Lord of the Iron Islands during the Dance of the Dragons, was only 20 when he was killed and died without any heir of his body, leaving a dispute for the lordship between the illegitimate sons of his numerous salt wives.

His eldest surviving son, Toron Greyjoy, was three or four when the Dance began and presumably five or six when the Dance ended. Toron Greyjoy’s mother, one of Dalton Greyjoy’s salt wives, was killed by Toron’s aunts and their husbands who were all vying for the Regency, had to see two of his aunts die when Johanna Westerling and Lord Leo Costayne invaded the Iron Islands in retribution for Dalton’s invasion of the Westerlands.

Even worse, a younger son of Dalton by the name of Rodrik Greyjoy was raised up as a rival to Dalton by some of the ironborn lords. Rodrik was, in turn, taken prisoner by the Lady Johanna Westerling, gelded, and made the fool of young Lord Loreon Lannister. This is a child who could be five at the most, if not younger, and all that Archmaester Haereg of the Citadel recorded of him is “A fine fool he proved, yet not half so foolish as his father”.

If anyone has need of me, I will be screaming into the void for GRRM to do some basic math when building family trees for his historical ASOIAF fiction, and adding the poor Greyjoy children to the list of characters to suffer needlessly at his hands.

Dalton Greyjoy, known as the Red Kraken, was Lord of the Iron Islands, Lord Reaper of Pyke, and head of House Greyjoy during the final days of Viserys I Targaryen and then the Dance of the Dragons. He is regarded as a great hero of the ironborn of the Iron Islands.

Dalton was a daring and bloodthirsty man. He was loved by his men but not by his wives, as he tired of women quickly.

The wild young son of the heir to Pyke, Dalton rowed at age five and reaved at ten, sailing with his uncle to plunder the pirate towns of the Basilisk Isles. By fourteen, Dalton had sailed as far as Old Ghis, fought in a dozen actions, and claimed four salt wives.

Dalton claimed a Valyrian steel longsword, which he named Nightfall, off a dead corsair. While fighting in the Stepstones as a sellsail, the fifteen-year-old Dalton avenged his uncle after watching his death. Because Dalton emerged from the fight drenched in blood from a dozen wounds, men began calling him the Red Kraken. Later in the same year, Dalton returned to the Iron Islands to claim the Seastone Chair after hearing of his father's death. Immediately he began to build longships, forge swords, and train fighters, citing that "the storm is coming" as the reason.

The Dance of the Dragons began after the death of King Viserys I Targaryen in 129 AC when Dalton was sixteen. The Red Kraken is said to have laughed after hearing of the outbreak of war.

The greens of Aegon II Targaryen offered Dalton the position of master of ships and the admiralty to replace Ser Tyland Lannister, who had been made master of coin, if Dalton would bring his ships around Westeros to battle Lord Corlys Velaryon, the Sea Snake. Instead of leaping to the offer, Dalton waited to see what the blacks had to offer. On the black council, Prince Daemon Targaryen suggested appealing to Dalton's bloodlust to bring him on the side of Rhaenyra Targaryen. Instead of asking him to sail to Blackwater Bay, Rhaenyra only asked for Dalton to attack her enemies.

The Red Kraken chose black over green, deciding to attack the nearby westerlands, vulnerable with Lord Jason Lannister campaigning in the riverlands. Jason's wife, Lady Johanna, barred the gates of Casterly Rock but was unable to protect the rest of the west. Dalton burned the fleet of House Lannister and sacked Lannisport, carrying off gold, grain, and trade goods. Hundreds of women and girls were taken as salt wives, including the favorite mistress of Jason and their natural daughters. Dalton led the capture of Kayce, and after the fall of Faircastle and Fair Isle he claimed four of Lord Farman's daughters as salt wives, giving the fifth, the "homely one", to his brother Veron. Lord Jason was killed in the Battle of the Red Fork in 130 AC.

For the better part of two years, the Red Kraken ruled the Sunset Sea like the ironborn kings of old, although he did not claim the title King of the Iron Islands. Ser Tyland Lannister and the regency of Aegon III commanded Dalton to cease his raiding, but the Red Kraken ignored them. When Lady Johanna Lannister began building a new fleet on behalf of her son, Lord Loreon Lannister, Dalton's ironmen burned her shipyards and abducted another hundred women.

Dalton never took a rock wife, although he had twenty-two salt wives and boasted of having a hundred. When Dalton heard of the Maiden's Day Cattle Show, he considered sending one of his sisters as a candidate to become King Aegon III Targaryen's second bride. After her westermen defended Kayce and slew Dalton's favorite uncle, Johanna sent a ragtag fleet to discretely invade Fair Isle. The ironmen ambushed these westermen, however, and Dalton sent the heads of Lord Prester, Lord Tarbeck, and Ser Erwin Lannister to Johanna at Casterly Rock.

After Lord Alyn Velaryon defeated the Braavosi fleet in the Stepstones during the Daughters' War, Lord Unwin Peake attempted to rid himself of Alyn Oakenfist by sending him to end Dalton's insurrection. Dalton responded by gathering hundred of longships to Fair Isle and the coasts of the westerlands. The Red Kraken intended to conquer the Shield Islands and Driftmark and sack Oldtown and Sunspear.

While sleeping in Lord Farman's bedchamber at Faircastle in 133 AC, Dalton was killed when one of his salt wives, the girl Tess, cut his throat with his own dagger before throwing herself into the sea. As the Red Kraken had never taken a rock wife, his heirs were two young salt sons at Pyke, Toron and Rodrik. Dalton also had three sisters and several ambitious cousins. Toron was only five years old, and within hours of the Red Kraken's death a bloody struggle for succession broke out among the ironborn. Hundreds of ironmen were killed as Fair Isle rose in rebellion. Faircastle held out for a time, but the castle fell after Gunthor Goodbrother slew Alester Wynch while fighting for another of Dalton's salt wives, Lysa Farman. Having arrived to find Dalton already dead, Alyn Oakenfist left a third of his fleet with the westermen and returned home for the crownlands.

In 134 AC Lord Jason Lannister's widow, Johanna Lannister, avenged Dalton's raids by having her men-at-arms sail to the Iron Islands with the fleet of Ser Leo Costayne, the lord admiral of the Reach. Among the ironborn slain were two of Dalton's sisters and nine of his cousins. His younger son, Rodrik, was taken captive, gelded, and made into Casterly Rock's new fool.

Dalton's sword, Nightfall, eventually passed to House Harlaw. The Red Kraken's life is included in Archmaester Mancaster's Sea Demons: A History of the Children of the Drowned God of the Isles.

Toron Greyjoy is the firstborn son of Dalton Greyjoy, the Red Kraken, and heir to Pyke. As captain of the Arcane Adventure, he has earned a name as a bold and cunning leader, destined to surpass even his father’s fearsome legacy. A natural strategist with a blood-soaked grin, Toron bends the knee to the Drowned God, offering him his enemies in ritual sacrifices that rival the old songs. Yet he holds no love for the Faith of the Seven, seeing it as weak and foreign to the Ironborn way of life. Unlike his father, Toron rejects the excesses of Dalton’s rule, particularly his penchant for taking many salt wives. Out of defiance, he remains unmarried, unwilling to follow a path he deems hollow. Toron instead channels his energy into forging his own legacy, one shaped by his time training in Braavos and the Free Cities. The tide guides his choices, and his adventures across the seas have made him as unpredictable as the stormy waters he commands. Though Toron is a captain who commands his crew with an iron fist and a great tactical mind, he has always taken on a more personal role with his siblings. In Dalton’s absence, Toron became a father figure to many of them, offering guidance, stories, and care. He braids his younger siblings' hair, trains with them, and ensures they know the ways of the sea. To them, Toron is a protector and a mentor—he is a son to few, but a father to many. Toron enjoys stargazing, often spending hours alone on the deck of his ship, lost in the night sky as he contemplates the mysteries of the world. Toron’s great singing voice, though rarely heard by others, emerges during moments of drunkenness. Few are lucky enough to hear it, but for those who do, it’s a cherished gift. Toron is also haunted by a close call in battle, where he nearly lost an eye. This experience has led to a peculiar habit: he trains himself to move and fight in complete darkness, honing his senses to a razor-sharp edge in case he ever faces another such challenge.
