“I really appreciate this, thank you. I’m sorry to be so much trouble,” you bit your lip before smiling sheepishly as you glanced up at Professor Wilson. He was the Dean at the Californian University you were now attending.
Wilson waved away your words of thanks and apologies as he smiled down at you as he adjusted the glasses at the end of his nose, “it’s no trouble at all, I’m happy that I was able to help,” he strode quickly down the hallway that you had to struggle to keep up. He was taking you to your lecture that started five minutes ago.
You had never gone to college at 18 like everyone else, how could you when you had no idea what you wanted to so? So, here you were at 26 in your second year of University, you had transferred in from New York and unfortunately for you, you had decided that you wanted to transfer in the middle of the semester.
Thankfully, as the Dean, Sam Wilson was able to help and he’d been very generous with his help, Sam knocked on the door of the lecture hall and a couple of seconds later, there was a warm cheerful voice that bade you to enter. Sam strode into the room while you lingered in the doorway, suddenly feeling nervous.
“What can I do for you, Professor?” the lecturer asked Sam, you didn’t have to be looking at him to know that he was smiling, you could already hear it in his voice.
“I’m so sorry to interrupt, Professor Torres, but you have an extra student, a transfer,” Sam glanced over you at his shoulder, giving you a warm smile so you walked up to stand at his side, “Y/N Y/L/N.”
You looked up at the Professor and saw with a jolt that he was only a couple of years older than you and he was gorgeous, with curled thick hair and puppy dog eyes. He was wearing a white button up shirt and he’d rolled his sleeves up to his forearms and you practically salivated at the sight. Torres’ eyebrow raised and his mouth parted in surprise as he looked at you, nodded his head and you noticed a muscle fluttering in his jaw.
“Welcome, Miss Y/L/N,” he smiled which made his eyes crinkle, you flushed and managed to smile back.
“I’ll leave her in your capable hands,” Sam grinned and patted you on the shoulder as he strode from the room.
Torres smiled at you as you stood there, not daring to turn around to see everyone’s eyes on you, “what are your feelings about Dante’s Inferno?”
You laughed as you hitched your bag higher on your shoulder, “I like it, though it did give me nightmares.”
Torres chuckled as he ran a hand through his hair as he nodded, looking mildly impressed that you’d already read it, “go ahead and find a seat, Y/N.”
You nodded at him and, ignoring the eyes on you, you walked through the seated sea of students and found an empty space next to a cute guy with blonde hair and dimples. He grinned at you as you sat down, you smiled back and turned back to look at Torres, who looked between you and the guy with a muscle fluttering in his jaw. He momentarily hesitated before he began his lecture again.
As Torres talked, you found yourself hanging onto his every word – as was there girls that were sitting in front of you – causing you to roll your eyes and shake your head. Torres spoke with his hands so about ten minutes into the lecture, you spotted his wedding ring glinting under the artificial light. Soon, Torres left the class to start their essay on Dante’s Inferno and you were going back over your notes when you glanced up to see Torres make his way to you.
“Y/N,” he whispered so he wouldn’t disturb any of your classmates, you raised an eyebrow as you sat back in your seat, waiting, “I need to see you at the end of class, you missed the assignment at the start of class.”
“Sure thing, Professor,” you smiled, causing him to nod at you before he cleared his throat and walked back to his desk, glancing at you over his shoulder, making you smile to yourself as you went back to your notes.
At the end of class, you hung back and took your time gathering your things, letting the rest of the class file out, hardly anyone spared you a glance but you weren’t here to make friends. When everyone had left Torres was rooting through his desk drawers for something so you took it upon yourself to stalk over to his desk.
“So, what’s the assignment, Professor?” you asked, laughing as he whipped his head up quickly to look at you and you gave him an innocent look.
Torres bit his lip as he leaned his hip against his desk, “miss Y/L/N,” he chuckled before trying again, “miss Y/L/N,” he shook his head, “I’m sorry, I can’t do it, it’s too weird calling you by your maiden name.”
You giggled as you cupped your husband’s cheeks, “but baby, you were doing so well,” you smirked as you wrapped your arms around his neck, pulling him into a sweet kiss. You had missed him so much. Your husband Joaquin was mostly a guest lecturer so he travelled all over the country. Joaquin smiled against your lips as he wrapped a hand in your hair and leaned you against his desk.
“You’re so bad, Professor,” you laughed as you watched his eyes darken and he leaned in for another kiss.
“I missed you so much,” he pulled you close as he murmured against your lips.
“I missed you too,” you smiled, playing with the ends of his hair, “I needed a break so I got a week off from college in New York, to come and see you. Sam helped me out with the arrangements.”
Joaquin laughed as he kissed your forehead, playing with your wedding ring that you wore around your neck, “you needed a break from New York so you decided to come to a college in California?”
You smiled as you rested your hands against his firm chest, “okay when you put it like that, it sounds silly,” you laughed, “but I’m only in this college today and tomorrow.”
“And the rest of the time, you’re gonna be naked in my bed?” he looked at you with innocent eyes, even though his words betrayed him.
“Of course,” you smirked, leaning forward to capture his lip with yours, biting his bottom lip gently as you pulled away.
Joaquin smiled as he moved your hair away from your face, “I promise, as soon as I finish my post here, I’m going to get a permanent one in New York, I want to start our family, Y/N. I love you.”
You knew that Joaquin absolutely adored his job and you knew what you were signing up for when you married him but that didn’t mean that you missed him any less. You would love for him to have a permanent job in New York, for him to be there when you got home.
“That sounds absolutely perfect, I love you too, baby,” you kissed him sweetly, before you smirked and pushed him away a little so you could perch on the edge of his desk, hiking your skirt up so he could see your lace underwear. You smirked as his eyes darkened and he licked his bottom lip, “now how about we see about that extra credit Professor Torres?”
“God, Y/N. You’re gonna be the death of me,” he smirked, pulling your legs so they wrapped around his waist. Bless Sam Wilson for helping you with this.

The smell of your lemon scented disinfectant filled your small kitchen and you wrinkled your nose at the strong smell. Your boyfriend, Joaquin was coming home from a month long mission today and you did what you normally did when he was due to arrive back home. You gave the whole apartment a deep clean so you wouldn’t spend the whole day watching the clock, waiting for his arrival. Excitement and longing fizzed through your body as you stood back and admired your handiwork, smiling to yourself. Your cell phone started ringing, making you jump and you grinned when you saw the caller ID.
“Hey, handsome,” you smiled and your heart soared when you heard his deep chuckle, you had missed the sound of his laugh so much. His laugh was your favourite soundtrack.
“Hello, beautiful. God, I missed your voice,” you blushed at his words, you just wanted to see him and kiss him, “I’ve just got back to base, though traffic at rush hour is going to be a nightmare, so I’ll probably be home with you in an hour. Sam is going to give me a ride,” his voice was distorted by a long yawn and you coughed to cover up a giggle, “I love you, angel.”
Joaquin sounded exhausted, usually when he got home after a mission he would insist on taking you out for a drink, he’d always say, ‘why can’t I treat my baby girl? Are you gonna hold that against me?” he’d give you those great big puppy dog eyes and you’d know that you were done for. However, he sounded so tired and he’d just been away on a mission with Sam and Bucky, a mission that he’d been worried about. So tonight, you were going to spoil your Prince.
“I love you too, sweetheart, see you in an hour.”
When you’d both hung up, you got a bottle of champagne that you had reserved for his homecoming and you left it in a bucket of ice to make sure it was even more crisp and refreshing. You dug your special lavender candles out of the bathroom cabinet and you lit them in the bathroom when he messaged you to say that he was on his way up to the apartment.
As soon as Joaquin walked through the door, kitted out in full army gear with that lazy smile on his face, your heart fluttered. You couldn’t stop yourself from running into his arms, flinging your arms around his neck. Joaquin didn’t seem to mind as he chuckled and lifted you off the floor. In his arms, you felt like you were home again.
“I missed you so much!” you pulled back to look at his handsome face.
He smiled and cupped your cheek, pulling you in for a deep kiss that made your head spin, “I missed you more, you look beautiful by the way,” his eyes were so warm and soft and he made you feel like a million dollars, when in fact, you were merely in your sweats, “where would you like to go tonight?”
“We’re staying in, Torres,” you teased, tapping his nose.
“But I always take you out when I get back home,” he tilted his head, looking confused.
“Yes, but you’re exhausted, let me spoil you like you always spoil me.”
It was then that he let out a lopsided grin, that took your breath away, “have I told you that I love you today?”
You beamed, your eyes drinking in the beautiful sight before you as you dragged gentle fingers through his hair. He closed his eyes in contentment as he leaned into your touch, “you literally told me about an hour ago but I always love hearing it.”
He laughed as he pulled you in for a deep kiss, “I love you, Y/N,” he muttered against your lips before he set you down on the floor.
“I love you too,” you smiled, resting your hands on his chest, “let’s work on getting these clothes off you,” you grabbed the bottle of champagne.
Joaquin scoffed playfully, “God, I’ve barely been here ten minutes and you’re already trying to get me naked.”
“You know me too well baby,” you smirked, pressing a lingering kiss to his lips.
As you ran the bath – putting in some of your fancy bubble bath – Joaquin’s arms wouldn’t stray from your waist, “will you get in with me?” he asked in a shy voice.
You smiled as you turned in his arms and found him blushing, “of course darling,” you giggled.
As the bath filled up, Joaquin let you remove his uniform, shivering when you ran your hands over his skin. When he stood before you in his boxers, you poured him a glass of champagne, “how was the mission, Joaquin?” you asked, massaging his forearms.
Almost at once, his face fell, “I um don’t really want to talk about it right now, is that okay?” he asked biting his lip.
“Of course handsome,” you kissed his chest, wrapping your arms around his waist.
When the bath was full and Joaquin pushed his boxers off, you flushed and couldn’t look him in the eye, even though you had been together for a couple of years and you had seen him naked so many times. He chuckled and tucked a finger beneath your chin and he leaned down to kiss you. Joaquin helped you out of your clothes slowly, kissing the back of your neck.
“You’re so beautiful, Y/N,” he beamed when you flushed and he helped you into the hot bath, wrapping his arms around you and pulling you against his chest. You smiled as you pressed a gentle kiss to his cheek and curled your arms over his.
The both of you sat in the bath until it went cold, whispering sweet nothings to each other. When you got out, you wrapped the both of you in a fluffy towel. You and Joaquin were both grinning like lovesick fools.
Later on, after you had ordered the greasiest take-out food ever, you were snuggled up on the couch, watching shit TV. Joaquin’s head was leaning against your chest with his arms wrapped around your waist. You stroked his hair off his forehead and delved your fingers into his thick hair, massaging his scalp.
“Mm,” Joaquin moaned in bliss, “that feels so good angel,” you smiled at his words and kissed his forehead. He turned to jelly in your arms, he was completely relaxed, “I think that Sam thinks I’m an idiot,” he breathed against your skin in a small voice.
You raised your eyebrows as you pulled him closer, “why do you think that, baby?”
“The mission went wrong and I think Sam thinks it was my fault. Bucky certainly thinks that I’m an idiot.”
“Bucky thinks that everyone is an idiot,” you giggled, trying to lighten the mood but Joaquin didn’t seem to think that it was funny. You sighed as you cupped his cheeks and those endless brown eyes were sad as he looked at you, “if Sam thought you were an idiot he wouldn’t have asked you to go on the mission with him. Whatever happened wasn’t your fault, I promise you that.”
Joaquin smiled a little uncertainly as he kissed your cheek, “I love you, Y/N.”
“I love you too.”
The both of you decided to go to bed earlier than usual and your gorgeous boyfriend cheekily grinned at you from beneath the covers as he watched you get ready for bed, “thank you so much for tonight, beautiful, I really needed it.”
You glanced over your shoulder at him and grinned, “you’re welcome baby, you deserved to be spoilt.”
Joaquin smiled a little shyly as he fiddled with his fingers, “will you sleep naked with me tonight? No funny business, I just want to feel your skin against mine.”
Your heart melted at his request, who were you to deny him? Without a word you slipped off your sleepwear and his eyes raked over you with a loving look on his face. He held out his hand to you and you kissed his knuckles as you slipped beneath the covers with him. Joaquin’s skin was warm against yours as he pulled you into his arms, lightly trailing his fingers down your back. You kissed his chest, resting your hand on his stomach.
“I love you so much,” you grinned smiling up at your beautiful boyfriend; you have never been so in love before.
Joaquin smiled down at you as he kissed your forehead, “I love you too, Y/N and I always will,” you were so happy that he was safe and he was back home with you again. In his arms you were home again.

Panic filled your body like poison as you checked the campus map again – the map that made no fucking sense – and then you glanced at your watch. You weren’t late yet but if you kept this up for much longer then you would be late, you had had to transfer to a different college in the middle of the semester, and you hated being the new girl. Blinking back frustrated tears, you looked down the long winding hallways; you just wanted to give up. It was then that your saviour turned up.
“Are you okay, Miss? Are you lost?” at the sound of the warm, kind voice you whirled around.
You were met with the warmest chocolate brown eyes that you had ever seen. Tearing your eyes away from his, you looked at him properly and blushed when he gave you a lopsided grin that made his eyes crinkle. He was very handsome but not in an intimidating way, his smile was very inviting.
“Yes, is it that obvious?” you laughed, “are you a student here?” you asked but supposed that it was a stupid question since he was dressed in army gear.
“Me? No, I’m not,” he smiled, running a hand through his dark hair, “I was just making sure that my little sister actually went to her class. What lesson have you got?” he nodded at the schedule and map in your hand.
“Oh,” you mumbled, feeling flustered at the presence of the handsome stranger with the puppy dog eyes who was willing to help, “History.”
The man’s face lit up at once, “seriously? I just came from the History lecture hall! Can I walk you? I wouldn’t want you to get lost again,” he laughed as he held out his hand, “I’m Joaquin Torres, but most people call me Torres.”
You smiled as you placed your hand in his warm one and shook it, “Y/N Y/L/N, but most people call me, Y/N,” you giggled, “and I’ll be glad of your help, thank you.”
Torres laughed, his nose scrunching up in the process, “you’re welcome, Y/N. Let’s go.”
As you walked down the hallway, glad to have an ally, you glanced at Torres’ handsome profile, “so you said you just walked your sister to her class? I don’t know many brothers who would do that.”
Torres rolled his eyes as he scoffed, “found out that she was skipping her classes. Someone has to be the responsible sibling.”
You laughed, thinking that it was awfully nice of him, “what’s her name?”
“Ava, she’s a pain in my ass but I love her.”
The name Ava Torres sounded familiar, where had you heard that name before? Then it hit you, “oh! She’s my roommate but I haven’t met her yet, I was meant to be here yesterday morning but my flight was delayed and I didn’t get here till late last night. I didn’t want to disturb her so I crashed in a motel for the night.”
Torres clicked his tongue and gave you a sweet smile, “you didn’t have to do that, how come you transferred in the middle of the semester?”
Before you could stop it, the smile slid from your face, you could hardly tell a stranger that your mom was in her final months of life. You were the only family that she had left so you had moved to be close to her.
Before you could utter a word, Torres immediately starting babbling through an apology, “I’m sorry, Y/N. I shouldn’t have asked, I’m so goddamn nosy,” he almost winced.
You had to suppress a giggle, he was so adorable when he was nervous, “it’s okay,” you assured him as he glanced over at you, biting his lip, “it’s just easier for me to be in this city,” he nodded as he gave you an apologetic smile.
A gorgeous young woman who was about to walk into the lecture hall rolled her eyes as soon as she saw Torres, “I’m going to class, okay?”
Torres held up his hands in defence as he gestured over to you, “this is Y/N Y/L/N,” before he could introduce you further, the woman gasped and pulled you into a warm hug.
You giggled as you hugged her back, “I’m Ava, your roommate, it’s so nice to meet you!”
You grinned at Ava as she pulled away, “it’s nice to meet you too.”
Ava smiled at you before she looked over your shoulder to glare at her brother, “goodbye, Joaquin.”
You glanced at Torres as he stuffed his hands in his pockets and gave you a shy smile, “it was really great to meet you, Y/N.”
You flushed, your insides turning to jelly as you felt the warmth from his smile, “it was good to meet you too, Torres. Thank you for helping me find my way.”
“No problem,” he smiled as he began to walk away, glancing back over his shoulder to shoot you one last grin. You took one last lingering look at him before walking into the lecture hall with Ava.
Over the next few weeks, you became closer with Ava, it was natural because you roomed together and had class together. Ava was a really cool girl with a heart of gold – though she hardly ever showed it – she was a lot like her brother in that respect. She was tired of how protective Torres was of her but you thought it was really sweet and endearing. You hadn’t seen much of Torres since you had first encountered him in the hallway and you were fine with that but you were lying if you said that you weren’t feeling a little deflated.
One night, you were studying for your upcoming History exam when there came a knock on the door of your dorm. Ava grumbled, “that better not be my useless ex-boyfriend,” she pulled open the door and sighed, “what the hell are you doing here?”
There came a mutter of a reply, “left your jacket at my place,” you frowned and looked at Ava but you couldn’t see who was at the door.
Ava scoffed as she took her leather jacket, “I didn’t desperately need it, and I have tons of jackets. Why are you really here?”
The visitor ignored her as they popped their head round the doorway and you instantly felt butterflies swarm in your stomach, “hey, Y/N.”
“Hi, Torres,” you giggled, lifting your hand in a wave.
“How are you?” he began to ask.
Ava rolled her eyes, “seriously? Get out of here,” she pushed at her brother’s chest and slammed the door behind him.
A couple of weeks later, you were hanging out at the bar that Ava worked in when a honey like voice filled your ears and made your blood fizz with excitement, “fancy seeing you here, Y/N.”
You smiled, inhaling a deep breath as you told yourself to play it cool, “Torres,” you turned to look at his handsome grinning face and you raised an eyebrow, “are you following me?” you teased.
Torres’ eyes widened as he held up his hands in defence, “oh God, no I swear! I’m just here with my friends,” he gestured over to the table of people who were sitting right by the dartboard before he hesitated, “you’re messing with me aren’t you?” he rolled his eyes playfully when you giggled with a nod, “can I get you a drink?”
“Sure, thank you,” you grinned, your heart skipping a beat when he gave you that famous lopsided grin and you spent the better part of the night getting to know him a little bit more.
The following week, you were watching shit TV, bored out of your mind when you heard a knock on the door. Glad for something to do, you jumped up and walked over to the door, pulling it open to see Joaquin Torres standing on the other side.
“Hi Torres, are you looking for Ava? She isn’t here right now.”
Torres shook his head, his eyes blazing with determination but you could see that he was nervous, “it was you that I came to talk to,” he sighed, resting his hands on the doorframe, “I should have said something before now. God, I should have said something, but I like you, a lot,” he laughed nervously, his eyes soft and warm as he grinned at you.
“Joaquin,” you gasped, placing your hands on his firm chest and you realised that that was the first time you had called him by his first name. Your heart fluttered as your legs turned to jelly and you began to feel light headed at his intoxicating smile. It didn’t help that he smelled fucking amazing, like cinnamon with just a hint of cigarette smoke. You were glad that he felt the same, “I like you too.”
The smile that Torres shot you was breath taking and he rested a warm hand on your cheek. His gaze flickered down to your lips like he was waiting for your permission. When you nodded his warm lips covered yours, kissing you gently. You wound your arms around his neck, playing with the hair at the nape of his neck as you deepened the kiss, pulling at his bottom lip with your teeth. He grunted against your lips and allowed you access, shivering as your tongue brushed against his and you tasted the spearmint gum that he’d been chewing.
When Torres pulled away, his lips were swollen and his eyes were slightly dazed, “can I take you to dinner sometime?”
“I’d love that,” you grinned as you pulled him in for another kiss.

Chapter Three - Promises
A couple of weeks later, Joaquin was up making breakfast by 10am – they took it in turns to make breakfast each day at The Avengers Compound. He’d been up at 6am to go running with Sam and then it was back to the Compound for a vigorous training session, sometimes he had a mission so he’d have to forgo the training. Joaquin was used to it by now and he liked the routine but he’d be lying if he said he didn’t want to laze around in bed for a little while, especially on such a grey and dreary day.
A strong smell of mint assaulted his senses and he wrinkled his nose as he glanced over towards the doorway. Bucky was standing there in his comfy clothes, towel drying his damp hair. He gave Torres an incline of his head as he crept up behind Joaquin to snag a piece of bacon. Before Joaquin realised that Bucky reached out with his metal hand, Joaquin’s hand made contact with the metal at a bruising impact.
The young man winced and he hissed through his teeth as pain shot through his hand, “breakfast isn’t ready yet,” he mumbled though it was futile now because Bucky was now wolfing down the rasher of bacon.
Bucky laughed, “nice try, buddy,” he muttered through a mouthful of bacon, “good bacon though, I’ll give you that.”
Joaquin was too busy scowling at the older man so he didn’t see Sam sneak up behind him and nab some more bacon. He whirled around when he watched Bucky’s face transform into a smirk as he glanced over Joaquin’s shoulder.
“Hey!” he shouted but he couldn’t keep the laughter out of his voice as he watched Sam eat the bacon, “the both of you fucking suck,” he rolled his eyes.
About ten minutes later Y/N shuffled into the kitchen with bleary eyes and tousled hair, Joaquin thought she looked adorable.
“Good morning, sleeping beauty,” Bucky laughed, ruffling her hair.
“Morning,” she murmured with a wave as she shot Joaquin a sweet sleepy smile.
In response he felt his cheeks heat up as he hastily passed her a plate of food, “help yourself.”
“Thank you, Joaquin,” she grinned, perking up a little as she took the plate and poured herself some coffee.
All four of them sat down at the kitchen table together to have their breakfast which Joaquin really loved, they were like a family, even if they didn’t get on all the time. Sam scoffed as he took a sip of his coffee and Joaquin raised an eyebrow questioningly at him.
“It’s so nice of him,” Sam nodded his head at Joaquin, “to offer you breakfast, Y/N, after he shouted at me and Bucky for stealing some.”
Y/N snorted into her food as her pretty eyes flickered over to Joaquin with a small smirk on her face. Joaquin rolled his eyes as he pointed his fork at Sam.
“For your information, breakfast wasn’t even ready and for another thing, Y/N and I go way back to when we were in high school. So, if anyone gets to steal breakfast, it’s her,” he willed his cheeks not to flush as he glanced over at her.
“Aw,” Y/N giggled as she clapped a warm hand on his arm, “you are so sweet, and yeah,” she smirked at Sam and Bucky, “I think I’m allowed to steal breakfast thank you very much,” she lifted her coffee cup to her lips and slurped it teasingly, she must have known that Bucky hated it because she laughed when he grimaced a couple of seconds later.
Sam smirked as he loaded more sauce onto his plate, “and there is a third reason,” he frowned at Joaquin questioningly, “remind me again, what was that other reason?”
Before Joaquin could do more than glare at him, Y/N looked between the two men and spoke up, “why, what’s the third reason?”
Joaquin felt panic coil in his stomach as he looked at the pretty young woman, maybe he wasn’t as incognito as he thought if Sam had figured it out, “there’s no third reason, Sam’s just being weird,” he narrowed his eyes at Sam who looked delighted and merely winked back at him. Joaquin was desperately searching for a change of subject and he was extremely surprised when Sam himself offered up one.
“Is it today you’re meeting with the Director of the FBI?” Sam asked Y/N and her face dropped at his question and she lowered her eyes to her plate and fiddled with her food. Joaquin knew that she hadn’t been out in the field for a while after losing Tony Stark but by the look on her face there was something going on. Would that explain why their friendship had come to an abrupt end in high school?
“Yeah, he wanted me to take some more time out of the field when I got back to the City. I thought it seemed unrealistic but he was friends with Tony, so…” she shrugged at a loss for words, “but apparently there’s urgent business and I’m ready to get back into the field,” a look of determination washed over her face and she smiled over at Sam, “thank you for asking.”
While Sam smiled back at her, Bucky was fidgety and when he looked up at Y/N, he almost looked guilty, “just take it easy, you hear me? We’ll take it easy with the training too.”
“Thanks, Buck,” she beamed at him and she didn’t seem to notice that he looked guilty. Joaquin wondered what training that Bucky was talking about but he didn’t want to be nosey, maybe he’d ask her a bit later on when it was just him and her.
When they had all finished breakfast, they all praised Joaquin’s cooking and Y/N got up to wash the dishes, “I’ll do that by the way,” Joaquin went after her as she was taking the dishes to the sink and filled it up with hot soapy water.
She scoffed playfully as she turned to look at him with her back to the sink, “you made us an amazing breakfast so the least I can do is wash a couple of dishes.”
Joaquin smiled, she was so sweet. He’d seemed to have forgotten that Bucky and Sam were standing behind him because he nearly jumped out of his skin when Bucky spoke up in a teasing voice, he was going to kill that old man.
“Sounds good,” Joaquin didn’t have to look at him to know that he was smirking, “how about you dry?”
“Yeah, Torres, how about it?” Sam chuckled, leaning in the doorway and Joaquin glared at him, he knew what they were doing but it annoyed him all the same, he didn’t need any help, “if I don’t see you before you leave for your meeting, good luck with the FBI, Y/N.”
“Thanks, Sam! See you guys later,” she grinned as she turned back to Joaquin, plunging her hands into the warm soapy water.
The kitchen was filled with mostly silence for the next few minutes, there was no noise except for the splashing of the warm water. Joaquin swallowed as he glanced at Y/N out of the corner of his eye, he so wanted to ask her but he wasn’t sure whether he had the guts. Thankfully, he didn’t need to ponder it for long because Y/N smirked at him.
“What is it? I know you want to ask something; I can practically hear the cogs turning in that head of yours.”
Joaquin let out a breath of laughter as he ran his damp hand through his hair, leaving it to curl at the ends, “I’m afraid that you’ll think I’m being nosy.”
Y/N raised an eyebrow as she looked at him in amusement and passed him the last plate, “you’re sweet, Torres,” she smiled, “just ask, I won’t think that you’re nosy, I promise.”
Joaquin nodded as he gulped, feeling his Adam’s apple bob in his throat, “what did Bucky mean about the whole training thing, are you joining the team?” he smiled, nudging his arm against hers.
She bit her lip as she pulled herself up to sit on the kitchen counter, “yeah, I guess that at the very least I owe you an explanation,” she hesitated, “Bucky and Sam want me to join the team yeah, I have these… abilities. When I was younger I was affected by a chemical explosion, it gave me powers, magic. I can control it better now but when I was a kid, I really couldn’t. I felt like a freak, I isolated myself so much from my friends that eventually they stopped hanging out with me. It wasn’t their fault but I pretended it was because I had no one to blame but myself, and I’m sorry.”
Joaquin’s eyes widened as he dried the plate and he took his time with his answer, he definitely wasn’t expecting that but he didn’t think that Y/N was a freak, “honestly? I wish that you knew that you could have opened up to me and I’m sorry that you felt like you couldn’t. I don’t think you’re a freak, not now and I definitely wouldn’t have thought that you were a freak then. I think it’s pretty cool actually.”
The immense look of relief that washed over her face was actually quite sad, he just wanted to give her a hug, “thank you,” she sighed with a smile as she pulled him into a tight hug. He could feel her gratitude through the hug and he held her tight, for as long as she needed him to.

The tension was so heavy and awkward in that huge conference room as she looked around at the other FBI agents. The Director was sitting across from you with his fingers folded on top of his folders as he patiently waited for your answer. When your boss, Michael had asked you to come in for a chat about you coming back to work in the field you had no idea that this was what you were setting yourself up for.
Biting your lip, you fiddled with the polystyrene of your coffee cup as you formulated your answer, you wanted to get out in the field again but this was almost going too far.
“Why me?” you asked, finally finding your voice as you tucked a strand of hair behind your ear.
Michael laughed, “why you? Because you’re one of my best damn agents, Y/N, we’ve really been struggling without you. And I know you will bring things to the table that other agents can’t,” he shot you a meaningful look over the thick rim of his spectacles.
You knew that he was referring to your powers, he’d been friends with your Uncle for years so you felt comfortable in confiding in him about it. You needed a job where you could grow, not a job where you were scared to be yourself, “I’ll have a partner won’t I?” there was no way that you were going into this thing without a partner, that wasn’t bravery, that was stupidity.
Michael nodded, rubbing a hand across his stubbled jaw, “of course you will.”
You took a deep breath, you couldn’t believe you were doing this but you were honoured that they wanted you on their team, “yes, I’ll do it.”
“Fantastic!” Michael looked far too happy about that fact as he scrawled on his notepad, “you have no next of kin?”
You shook your head, feeling nerves flutter around in your stomach, “not since my Uncle died, he was my emergency contact, I haven’t had the heart to find a new one,” you laughed nervously when Michael shook his head.
“Your emergency contact has been changed and they’ve been notified of the situation, he didn’t want you to worry about him.”
You frowned, thankfully you hadn’t been in need of an emergency contact for the past year so you had no idea that someone had taken it upon themselves to appoint them self as yours, “who is it? Why did he find out about this before I agreed?” you asked with interest.
“Bucky Barnes, he’s been your emergency contact since your Uncle died, he’s just looking out for you, Y/N. He knew that we were going to ask you.”
As you walked into the Avengers Compound, Joaquin was in the foyer looking gorgeous with damp tousled hair, he smiled, the edges of his chocolate brown eyes crinkling when he saw you.
“Hey, have you seen Bucky?” you asked, skipping the pleasantries.
“Living quarters, is everything okay?”
“Its fine, thanks, I’ll see you later,” you felt kind of bad but you had to hurry to speak to Bucky about how the hell he was your emergency contact.
You leaned against the doorframe in the living quarters, watching Bucky read a book, after a few seconds his lip twitched up into a smile, “Y/N, what can I do for you?” he asked without taking a second to look up.
“I was at my meeting today and they told me the most interesting thing, they told me that you’re my emergency contact,” you weren’t annoyed, you were just confused and you didn’t want Bucky to get hurt. Okay, so maybe you were a little annoyed.
“So?” he shrugged as he turned a page nonchalantly but you could see the muscle that was ticking in his jaw.
“You’ve been my emergency contact since Tony died,” at your words, he looked up at you guiltily, like a puppy who’d been scolded, “it’s only in the past couple of months that we’ve really been getting to know each other and I love you to pieces but why have you been my emergency contact for so long?”
He sighed as he ran a hand through his thick hair, “I’m the reason that you never got to meet your grandparents. Fuck, I nearly killed your Uncle, and you.”
“Bucky,” you sighed, you couldn’t believe that this was still eating him up, you walked over to join him on the couch, “I don’t blame you for any of that, it wasn’t you.”
“I promised myself that I would always protect you.”
You smiled gently as you pulled him into a hug, “I’m lucky to have someone like you, thank you,” when you pulled away, you bit your lip, “so, you know what they want me to do?” you couldn’t even bring yourself to talk about it, you were so scared. When Bucky nodded, you rested a hand on his arm, “you can’t tell Sam or Joaquin, I don’t want any of you to get hurt.”
“I won’t say a thing,” Bucky promised.
“If I die,” you started but Bucky interrupted you.
“Y/N, please, you’re not going to die. I’m not going to let you die.”
“If I die,” you carried on as if he hadn’t interrupted, “you make sure that you all look after each other, Bucky you have to promise me,” right now, this was the only thing that mattered.
