it was often she cried in the darkness , alone . away from everyone so no one saw her . no matter how much time had passed , everything still hurt . the lies , the deceit and most of all , the warped image of what she had thought was the perfect family . she felt so stupid . learning about what her own family did to others -- she held so much bitterness . she believed everything they fed her . what hurt her the most though was the fact that her entire life , all she wanted to do was make them proud of her . to have their support . she never had anyone’s support in anything she’s done in the past . not until travis came along . and her she was , while he was dealing with the horses , crying alone in the bedroom after her lawyer contacted her about the casino . she wanted to get rid of it . that wasn’t her life . that was malcolm and teal’s . as she laid down , curled up , tears rolling down her cheeks , she felt him sit next to her . “ i just -- sometimes need a moment . “ harper replied , rolling over to look at him . a soft sigh coming from her and a hand reached for his . “ just me thinking about the past . again . and becoming bitter -- again . “

“ sometimes that’s the beauty of age, “ a deep chuckled rumbled out from his chest but the humor of his thoughts ran inward. every sin made it seem like your soul was weighing in the balance towards judgment day when you were younger. a never ending swing of back && forth before you realized somethings weighed more than others, some mistakes were already counterbalanced by the good. john pictured himself at her age as he met her eyes. he’d been rougher around the edges but he recognized that same zeal to be a good person at every crossroad. it spoke to some dormant part of him, the one small sliver of hope that his actions had been equaled out even though the 30 some odd years he had over kam spoke the truth a little louder && clearer. he didn’t regret every thing he’d done but there were some that lingered in a gray area that had yet to prove their worth on what was left of him. things that would truly determine the worth of his soul when he met his maker or evelyn on the other side. only one would make him truly tremble with regret from behind their knowing blue gaze. he coughed against the cold wind biting at their faces as their horses ambled slowly through the frost frozen pasture before finishing his thought. “ the justification is always 20/20 when the sin is already behind you. “

“ is that so ? “ she took slow strides to where he stood in the kitchen . the smell of fresh coffee filled the entire house . she didn’t regret any of this . leaving montana , only to return when travis makes trips to the dutton ranch . gambit was even happy here . blue eyes gazed up at him , her smile -- as bright as it always was whenever she was around him . she was falling . and hard too . if this was what love felt like , she never ever wanted to lose it . to lose him . the feeling felt even better than any win in the arenas .

she reached for a hand of his . “ i wouldn’t want that . “ harper chuckled. she wondered though -- what he really meant by that and if it meant the same as what she thought . “ i hope i wouldn’t be hell on that heart of yours , travis wheatley . “ it was a tease coming from her . she then reached for one of the cups of coffee with her free hand , sliding it down the counter slowly , towards her . “ you do things to mine too . . . and , i wanna say it but -- i also don’t want to freak you out and think i’m rushing what we have . “

Piper supposed she should have been shy. Cassie could get away with running up and hugging Travis's leg but she should have remembered that she couldn't. However, Piper wasn't shy; not after 3 months during his busy season. She'd barely seen him and it had been....well it had been more difficult than she had thought.

Piper had never been one of those girls to check her phone or delete texts before she sent them, afraid that she was sending him too many. She'd never worried about calling them too much. Most of the time she didn't want to talk to them anyway. Still, she had found herself checking her phone before she went to bed to make sure that she hadn't missed a call. Hell most of the time before she had forgotten where she had even left her phone, much less taken it to bed with her!

Taking Cassies lead her arms wrapped around his neck in a full-bodied hug. She didn't pull away either, eyes closing as she took in the familiar texture of his worn t-shirt, the smell of him, the warmth of his body. She didn't even pull back as she looked up at him, arms still wrapped over his shoulders, chocolate eyes darting over his sun stained face before she leaned in, lips grazing over his cheek, a wide smile across her features at the words.

"I missed you too."

"We missed you!" Cassie cut in.

Piper smiled and nodded but whispered, "I really really missed you." She wanted to get that point across, fingers playing with the hair on the back of his neck affectionately.

She couldn’t help but look at him for a moment, trying to see if he was serious. This was his world and yes she had just shown up at one of the shows that he had said he was doing in Lousiana. She hadn’t thought that it would be intruding really. Cassie had begged her to go. That she wanted to see all the real riders now that she had gotten so into it with Travis. Piper had to admit that he was probably right. She would most likely be getting Cassie a horse at some point or taking the gentle giant once it was done with doing shows…something that she had secretly been doing some research into. Travis was already encouraging it and she didn’t want to give him too much affirmation that he was right…yet. She would keep resisting until she couldn’t anymore just because she wasn’t willing to loose this battle too easily. But as for today, when Cassie did want to do somewhere, Piper didn’t say no. Plus she could see more of the kinds of things that she would need to know and get, list tucked into the back of the leather bound notebook she always kept in her bag for notes, recipe ideas and now apparently horses.

Now that they were here though, she realized that it might seem a little bit creepy for her and Cassie to just show up. “Are you sure? You’re working.” She pointed out though Cassie was already talking to one of the horses as one of the hands brushed it down. She pressed her lips together before looking back at Travis. She had to admit that part of her was curious to see him in his natural environment. He seemed comfortable everywhere; including her house- but this was different, and she couldn’t help but give him a genuine smile. “You don’t have to entertain us. It was just meant to be a day trip anyway. She wanted to see ‘real riders’. Not to make you jealous or anything.” She chuckled before rolling her big brown eyes. “And okay; maybe I am getting bit more information of what you two are getting me into.” She sighed theatrically, though her still smiling at him ruined the effect.

greed was what drove the world. she knew this and had since she was young, its what drove her father into an early grave. its what made her and johnny lose everything they almost had, security, money, a family -- greed had stolen it without a word. a silent thief that slipped in an out of peoples lives in various forms, its most popular as friends. how many had come and gone after their bought of fame? too many and none that she longed to remember. her heart ached for johnny and his desire to have friends sometimes blinded him and it pained her to watch the fallout. he at time mentioned how bad she had it, being a shut in and reclusive from friendships; and maybe he was partially right it was tough keeping real friends.

its why elliot’s words resonate with her, the pale brows on her face lifting as she feels her lips turn downward into a frown. no one deserved to be used or treated like a piece of money, it was so -- “ its dehumanizing.” the words are soft as her eyes shift to look at him with a sorrowful expression, shoulders lifting and falling in an attempt to seem unbothered by the notion in itself.

“ really sucks putting so much effort and love into people, only for them to turn around and use you like a rag.” a hand comes to shove her hair out of her face as she lets her gaze break from his own and look into the distance, the sun setting in the distance almost comforting. a close on another long day, sleep would be kind to them both probably. it would shut out the world around and bring some form of peace, and with a small grin she looks back at elliot.

“ as my brother would say, fuck ‘em. which he would most likely literally do if they were attractive, but i think he’s right. if they cant seem how valuable you are away from what you have -- then they arent really worth your time are they? “

What terrible pet names would they give each other?

I dont know what he calls her besides honey and sweet heart but she calls him cowboy. As in "Go shower the barn off you before dinner cowboy." She tends to use french words too for him. prétendu Is one even before they are actually together (Suitor, boyfriend, boy I like) and Cher (Love, lovely, sweetheart) are two that she uses a lot, getting back to her Cajun roots. She likes that he doesn't know what shes saying....until someone tells him!
