Question for my archeology/history/reenactment girlies:

How does the early medieval/viking tortoise brooch actually work, mechanically speaking, on the back side?

Every picture I find is a modern reproduction with a hinged/spring pin that looks very modern (maybe modern is old?).

How were they really set up? I have not found a picture of the reverse side of any of these brooches. Are there any archeological papers illustrating the reverse side of these brooches?

The brooch of my dreams s2095 <3 

I’ve been obsessing over this brooch for well over a year now, have modeled it in clay and visited it in person. (and might be getting it recreated) 

 It’s from the southern part of Jæren (Rogaland) and dates to the period just before the Viking age, which in Norway is often called the Merovingian Period. It features classic norse “gripping beast”  elements that look so similar to some other brooches that they likely came from the same artist or even the same, but altered mold. It also has some fairly unique animal heads  sticking out at the top, bottom and sides, as well as four square-ish bosses with holes on each corner of the square middle field.  Above the animal heads are some figures that have caused some debate amongst my friends and I. In this illustration i decided to lean into that they might be representing human women (which are a popular design element in brooches) since you can kind of see hair sticking out “Pippi” style from a rounded head and arms and brooches on what might be a body.  

There are some ridges and grooves that don’t quite match up with everything i’ve drawn and a lot of it is interpretation. there are so many bumps and places where things likely have been polished away or deteriorated over its 1000+ years  in the earth.
