Hanging upside down was a torture method used in the 17th century. (Tsurushi). They left you with one hand free to show them you were renouncing God...
Now I'm wondering -
It's just a loose theory.
Since Salazar was likely a knight of the order during his lifetime, it's possible, that this and other tortures were used on him and others like him to harden them.
That's why he might have known this torture method in general and understand it's terror.
And the fact that you have no chances of escaping.
Unless it was just his idea, something he came up with on his own. He's a pure sadist, that's very possible.

EVER HEARD OF BAMBOO TORTURE? PROBABLY HAVE. SHARPEN THE TOP END OF A GROWING BAMBOO STALK,THEN TIE A PERSON ABOVE IT. BAMBOO GROWS FAST,SO ALL IT IS A NICE WAITING GAME.
BAMBOO GROWS IN INCHES BY THE DAY,SO EVENTUALLY,IT WILL GROW THROUGH THE PERSON.
