I don’t think that people generally realise what the motion picture industry has done to the American Indian, as a matter of fact, all ethnic groups, all minorities, all non-whites. And people just simply don’t realise, just take it for granted that that’s the way people are going to be presented and these clichés are just, I mean on this network every night, well perhaps not every night, but you can see silly renditions of human behaviour, the leering Filipino houseboy, the wily Japanese, the kook or the gook, black man, stupid Indian. It just goes on and on and on. And people actually don’t realise how deeply people are injured by seeing themselves represented, not so much the adults, who are already inured to that kind of pain and pressure, but children. Indian children seeing Indians represented as savage, as ugly, as nasty, vicious, treacherous, drunken. They grow up only with a negative image of themselves and it lasts a lifetime.
Happy 92nd birthday to the late Marlon Brando. Arguably the greatest actor of his generation, and one of the most dedicated humanitarians of his time. You still live on in the memories of others. (April 3rd, 1924 - July 1st, 2004)
32. Talk about a place you remember from your childhood & 39. Talk about things you wish you'd known earlier from the numbers thingamabob!
oh god u sweet angel u have the #s :’*
a place i remember from childhood—the small 2 acre patch of woods that was still left in my dirt-road neighborhood from when it used to all be ancient florida woods. it had a little dirt path cutting straight through it that only existed because people walked there and the whole place was dark and thick and consuming and almost prehistoric-looking. you could always hear small animals moving around but you couldnt hardly see a foot in front of you it was so dark. it was cleared to build a big house and now it’s all gone
things i wish id known earlier—that most of the qualities i am irrationally bothered by in others are reflections of myself in some way—that i am no special exception to anything—and also that i am not physically obligated by anything concrete in this world but nature and idk if that makes sense but it did in my head--basically just that i have free will and so much more is possible than the unspoken limits we at young ages learn for ourselves based on our own experiences

missavagardner's (Val) Questions:
1. If you could have a one night stand with a celebrity dead or alive who would it be?
- Marlon Brando or Alexander Skarsgard...pls god.
2. Could you picture yourself in a relationship with your favorite celebrity? explain your answer.
- Classic: With Rita Hayworth and Sharon Tate, Yes we'd be the bestest friends ever, have sleepovers, go shopping, travel the world everywhere, etc. I'd look after by bb Rita after all her break-ups and Sharon would tell us all the gossip about how tiny Roman Polanski's dick is and massive Jay's was and we'd giggle and drink rum in our underwear and I'd expect them to hold back my hair over the toilet as I vom up my guts from alcohol poisoning and in the morning, Sharon would bring us to her favourite diner where we'd have a hangover meal and discuss our next trip to Europe.
- Alive: Alexander Skarsgard, Alicia Vikander and Eva Green….Eva and I would watch loads of 1970’s European erotica films in her lush Parisian apartment, drink wine while listening to Wagner and then smoke our brains out in a café on the Champs Elysees all the time. Alicia and I would visit art galleries in Stockholm, eat lunch in a new restaurant everyday and celebrate midsommer every year together in Sweden. As for Alex, we’d get into a fuck-buddy relationship and swear that we’d never fall in love but inevitably, it happens. We eventually marry, live in Sweden and have 3 stunning Eurasian/Swedish babies that speak 6 languages and I become best friends with his dad Stellan who loves to tell me about his hippy days in Stockholm. So yes, I picture this. UNFORTUNATELY THIS IS THE REAL WORLD. R.I.P. ME.
3. Your favorite film made in the last 13 years?
- This is so difficult…The Others (2001), The Dreamers (2003), There Will be Blood (2007), Volver (2006), Eastern Promises (2007), Goodbye Lenin! (2003), Cidade de Deus (2002), In the Mood for Love (2000). I couldn’t possibly choose one. I’m sure there are others.
4. Your top 5 female singers
- Of the moment and in no particular order: Ella Fitzgerald, Anita O’Day, Lana Del Rey, Karen Carpenter, Nancy Sinatra.>
5. Last new-to you film you watched
- The Dead Girl (2006). I thought it was really good too. Amazing cast.
6. If you had to pick a decade for film which one would it be.
- Either the 1930’s or 1970’s.
7. An actor and actress born after 1960
- Eva Green, Alicia Vikander and Alexander Skarsgard are the obvious. I also have a major soft spot right now for Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis because I rewatched Natural Born Killers (1994) this morning. But omg there are so many actors and actresses I love.
8. Favorite foreign film
JESUS VAL, THESE QUESTIONS! In the Mood for Love (2000), Belle de Jour (1967), Throne of Blood (1957), Rashomon (1950)…Basically all of Kurosawa’s films that I’ve seen so far. All of Pedro Almodóvar’s as well. Especially Todo sobre mi madre (1999). L'Année dernière à Marienbad (1961), Fanny and Alexander (1982), L'Histoire d'Adèle H (1975) and Bande à part (1964)…AND SO MANY MORE I KNOW I’M LEAVING OUT TOO MANY.
9. A favorite quote
- "For what it’s worth: it’s never too late or, in my case, too early to be whoever you want to be. There’s no time limit, stop whenever you want. You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you’re proud of. If you find that you’re not, I hope you have the courage to start all over again." – Eric Roth, ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’
Or
“I'd marry again if I found a man who had fifteen million dollars, would sign over half to me, and guarantee that he'd be dead within a year.” - Bette Davis
The latter is basically me tbh.
10. Your favorite author
Everything and anything by the Brontë sisters also Nabokov, which sounds so pretentious but I don’t mean it to be. I’ve read only 4 of his books, on a 5th one now and although I’ve no fucking clue what half of his choice of words mean, his stories are very brilliant and daring. Agatha Christie and Stephen King too.
11. What’s your dream job/career.
I’ve no idea. I love film and fashion but my mind changes everyday and I’m moving to London in September and have no job. I’m screwed and completely lost.

aesthetically, would love to be able to pull off living in Paris or in the New England countryside (think Fenwick). BUT i think i have to say Los Angeles because even though i’m trying to get /away/ from a warm climate, it’s always going to be the place where everything i love so much is rooted. plus, all the theaters in the area that show classic films, and also being physically closer to a whole bunch of Hollywood archives that i reallllllly want for my research
40: Who I wish I could be
