By and large, that year's harvest failed. Everywhere. It was utterly, freeingly hopeless. Humanity was going to go extinct. One cannot make food out of nothing. But we had to. And we did.

I think everyone remembers that kind of ersatz-butter - it was almost tasteless, but, eating it, I could think only of love. The greatest kind of love - love for every human being. Before the war, when we saw civilization as unfathomably gigantic and powerful, it was a minute kind of affection. Seeing how fragile humanity really was, we finally understood that this love was vital to our survival.

Despite what many would like to think, it was not hope that saved us from extinction - we had to let go of it when the bombs detonated - really, it was all love. When Professor Giyata developed a method of synthesizing edible fats out of just about anything, he entertained no delusions about the future. He thought about the present - about his colleagues, compatriots, everyone else on our planet. His work, and the work of countless others across the world, saved billions and brought about the current era of universal prosperity and liberation. In this way it really is fitting that he also played such a crucial role in the reverse-engineering of the warp drive.

The FTL drive we salvaged from the NRV Distant Coast works by beaming colossal amounts of energy into an area smaller than a single proton. To be entirely honest, this shouldn't do anything. And yet, against all reason, spacetime implodes violently in a flash of teraelectronvolt rays, and any matter in the vicinity has no choice but to be thrown light-hours away from where it was seconds ago. As a method of propulsion, spatial cavitation is extremely inefficient, crude and dangerous. DCS Academician Nitarski is, frankly, barely faster than light. But it *is* faster. And that was all the N'Sharim needed to save themselves. It will have to be enough for us too.
