A03
Black clouds rolled in over a small village on the outskirts of a grand kingdom. The cobblestone streets were slick with the rain and mud as residents rushed to their homes, safe from the coming storm. Knowing exactly which direction to go and what she had to do, Emma Swan walked slowly amongst the crowd, with her head down, hiding her face in her cloak. Stopping suddenly in the middle of the street just outside her intended destination. Emma’s gusto faded as the emotional weight of the task ahead dawned on her and she pursed her lips. Looking up at an old rustic Tavern, hidden away down a narrow alley, and favoured by those who dwell in the more nefarious activities available in this realm. It was hard to tell what awaited inside, the music and chatter heard through the walls was enticing. Emma didn’t let her doubts overwhelm her, focusing on what she had to gain. Placing her hand on her head to hold the hooded cloak in place, her blonde curls still whipped about in the gusting winds. With one final exhale, Emma walked forward with haste, letting her heart lead the charge. She barged through the double-doored entrance, bumping into an intoxicated man as he rushed past her.
“Watch where you’re going, wench” The disgruntled drunk man said, stumbling out to the street.
Emma’s face emerged as she peeled back the hood from her cloak, looking around at the crowded bar with eager anticipation. The brick walls of the tavern are barely maintained with visible cracks along some of the walls. The room had a rustic ambiance, lit by candlestick chandeliers, commonly used by patrons to light their pipes by stealing the candles. People from across the land could typically be found here, at present, a group of blacksmiths were drinking in the corner, with other, more boorish looking men and women scattered around the room, some in groups, others alone. Emma sighed in defeat as she stepped closer to the bar and sat up on a stool. None of the many faces were who she was looking for tonight.
“Can I get ya anything?” A middle-aged woman said while polishing a dry glass behind the bar.
“Yeah, I’ll have….” Emma started to say before looking down at the small coin purse strung to her waist “Umm, actually, I’ll just have a water.”
“Sure” The woman said with a fake smile, clearly disgruntled.
A few moments later, a large tankard of water was slammed down in front of Emma, followed by a disapproving look. The sinking realisation that this was a waste of time caused Emma to slouch over the bar, fitting in with some of the other more inebriated patrons. The slim hope Emma had of finding Killian was fading, and it was about time to put this plan to rest. Just as she stepped off the stool, the large wooden doors swung open, followed by laughter and chatter from the emerging group. Most were dressed in leather, and all had swords sheathed at their sides; at the centre was Captain Killian Jones, better known as Captain Hook. One look into his devilishly handsome eyes and she struggled to catch her breath, because those eyes no longer recognized her. Everything from his bright blue eyes contrasting with his black scruff, his chest hair on display from his half open vest and the leather duster and the snug leather pants that revealed every curve and bulge, suited him. A large bundle of gold coins in a bag, that he held up, judging by the resounding cheer from his crew, they just had a successful heist.
“Some rum m’lady” he said loudly, as he gestured to the bar maiden.
When the pirates entered the tavern, some of the other patrons ran from the bar, while others were more subtle, slipping out the back. A few cheered at their arrival, one man simply hid under a table in fear of the coming shakedown. The once overcrowded tavern now had an empty table, which the captain and his crew quickly took over making themselves at home. Emma noticed their relaxed demeanour showing this tavern was familiar, a regular stopover for the captain and his crew. Looking over her shoulder smirking at Captain Hook, while he leaned up against the wall, straddling his legs over the long bench chair like a saddle. All her hopes rose once more, knowing this was just the beginning of a great night.
--
The noise in the small tavern grew louder with an abundance of laughter as the drinks poured even faster. Captain Hook loudly chanted a familiar sea shanty with his cohorts, arrogance overflowing from every part of him as he sat at the epicenter of the celebration. It wasn’t hard to see why he felt so good, sitting comfortably between two women who doted over him. A pile of gold on the table in front and a bottle of rum in his hand. The man next to him placed his cards face up on the table, once his losing hand was revealed, it resulted in a resounding cheer from the winner. Emma didn’t let any of this phase her, in fact there was no doubt in her mind that she would capture Killian’s eye. Seeing the overly flirtatious attention Killian was receiving just made Emma more determined. Lifting her cloak quickly from her shoulders revealed a low cut tightly fitting dress with a corset. Emma looked down, adjusting her cleavage to make sure all assets were on full display. Finishing the mug of water, she strutted over to the back table with haste, not wanting to be lost in the crowd. The rush of adrenaline that came with the thought of pulling this off made it easy for Emma to move herself closer. Seamlessly appearing between Killian’s crew, she made sure to lean over the table directly in front of Hook, long blonde curls and her chest centimetres from Killian’s face, she could smell the rum on his breath. Killian’s response to this was almost a state of shock, his mouth gaped open. Causing Emma to blush as Killian tried to compose himself, his focus now compromised. Surprising the group further, Emma picked up the bottle of rum and took a swig for herself.
“Thanks for the drink” she said after putting the bottle back down.
“You assume too much, wench,” he said.
“Oh, my apologies Captain Hook,” she coyley replied “I guess I better leave,”
“There’s no need to be rash,” he said gesturing for Emma to take a seat “You want a drink, then you can play” he finished, eyebrow cocked.
Emma looked down at the cards on the table with a smile, noticing they were playing poker. Killian leaned forward and brushed aside the two women doting on him, only focused on the one in front.
“You have no idea what you got yourself into,”
“You played before?”
“I never reveal my hand, Captain,” she replied with a smirk.
“Let’s deal,” Hook replied, looking over to his comrade.
As instructed by his captain, a man grabbed the remaining cards from the table, shuffling them quickly, recognition on his face as he looked at Emma. Her sights laid firmly on Killian’s eyes and hand, as it caressed his bristled chin thoughtfully. Each person at the table was handed five cards, most grabbed and placed them in their hand straight away. Emma did the same glancing at them quickly, the expression on her face remaining the same, as she looked back up at the captain. The rules were simple, if you folded, you drank a sip of your beer, but if you lost a hand you would down a shot of rum. The more drunk you were the worse your poker face became. While this was explained, Emma stayed confident not wanting to reveal that she already knew the captain well enough to read him like an open book.
“You’re not as good of a bluff as you believe,” he said.
“For you and your rum’s sake, I hope you are right,” she replied.
--
They went through a few rounds of cards, with more and more people dropping out as it went on. The group was very welcoming to the newcomer, like an old friend that had stopped after a long absence. Too busy focusing on the cards in front of them though, no one noticed Emma spitting her rum back into a tankard presumably filled with beer, while the rest of the crowd were getting more and more intoxicated. The last game came down to just the two of them and Emma slammed her cards face up on the table, which was met with a wondrous sigh from the observing crowd. A pair of aces meant that Emma had the bested Killian; she had also managed, just for this round, to up the bet to double shots for the loser.
“Drink up!” Emma called out to the captain, who obliged by downing another two shots of rum.
“I think you're trying to get me drunk,” he said with a smirk.
“You were doing just fine all by yourself,” she replied.
The rest of the men slowly stepped away, closely followed by the two women who were clinging to the pirate earlier. As she came around the table Emma smiled, happy to have a moment alone with him.
“I do prefer one on one,” he said moving across the chair, his balance slightly off as the rum went to his head.
“Finally,” she said with a smirk.
“Something tells me you’re after more than a drink” he said pointing the finger at her. Emma acknowledged his comment with a nod.
“I guess I have a few questions.” she said coyly, Eying the captain's hook.
“Ask away,” he replied.
“What brought you here?” Emma replied leaning in closer, touching his leg with her fingertips.
“You never know where the tides will take you,” he replied.
“That I know, is there anything specifically that lead you to this tavern tonight?” she asked looking deep into his eyes hoping to see some recognition.
“A siren song perhaps,” He replied mockingly before pausing. His expression turned serious “I just knew this was the place to be.”
“Well, you weren’t wrong,” She replied.
Emma couldn’t hide her relief as this small piece of information was shared with her, smiling as they continued their conversation.
“I just re-joined with the Jolly Rogers crew after a solo trip I endeavoured on in Misthaven, didn’t quite go as planned,” he continued.
“Does a Captain usually leave his crew behind?” She asked.
“No, but where I went, they could not follow.” his expression was pained, searching his mind, trying to remember what it was he was after, and why he returned empty handed but the memories just weren't there.
“Are you ok?” she asked.
“Yeah, sorry love, the rum seems to be clouding my thoughts,” he replied.
“Where’s your next stop?” she asked.
“We’ll be heading back to Neverland tomorrow,” he said.
“Oh, right of course,” She replied, hopeless realising she only had tonight to get him to remember.
“Don’t worry, we still have time to enjoy tonight,” he said with a smirk.
Taking another sip of rum from her glass, this time without spitting it back out, Emma slid her hand delicately along the pirate’s vest moving up to his shoulders feeling the material. It was smooth and familiar, but there was something making her feel uneasy as she looked into his trusting eyes, so she let go.
“What about you, lass?” He asked, lifting his cup and taking another swig of rum.
“I’m on a journey, I must travel through the endless forest” Emma said.
“Why would a wench like yourself venture out into that dark abyss alone?” Killian said, curious.
“That is my burden to bear, Captain” she replied, but the sadness in her tone was impossible to hide.
This only intrigued him more, Emma’s eyes, although beautiful, seemed lost and broken and appeared to be looking for a distraction in the tavern tonight. This was something Killian was more than willing to provide. Edging forward on the seat, he laid his arm on the table beside Emma with a smirk on his face.
“So mysterious, you haven’t even told me your name,” he asked.
“It’s Emma” She replied with a smile looking deep into Hook’s eyes.
“Just Emma,” he said somewhat suspiciously, wanting to know more.
“Want another drink?” she said, already pouring a glass for them both.
“Louder!” A man screamed standing on a table, as the group around him sung a sea shanty.
Emma, the captain and most of the tavern looked over to him, with surprised scrutinizing looks, the music coming to a halt. Until the intoxicated man stumbled and fell from the table, only to be caught by friends in the crowd.
“He’ll be passed out on the floor before the night ends,” Emma said in an amused tone.
“We’ll be heading to my quarters sooner than that,” Hook teased.
“You’re so sure of yourself,” she replied.
“Well, it seems I’ve answered all your queries and yet you're still here, looking for something more” he said.
Emma didn’t respond, biting her tongue, trying not to let the truth slip out, looking off sullenly into the distance before taking another swig of rum. Believing the Captain would not believe her even if she explained everything in detail.
“Perhaps, there’s an itch you just can’t scratch” he said with a smirk.
Letting the guilt get the best of her, she told him the truth. “I’m not who you think I am”.
“A mystery, how intriguing” he said, one eyebrow carefully arched up.
“It’s more of a tragedy,”
“That I’m all too familiar with love” he replied before sitting back and sipping his drink.
“Let’s keep this simple, two ships passing in the night” she said, barely able to contain her smile.
“Passing closely, I hope.” his left leg now in-between Emma’s, sliding up against hers intimately.
“Captain,” she replied blushing.
“If the lady protests, we can leave it at a drink”
Emma’s expression changed suddenly, feeling an energy drain as the possibility of being with him began to slip away. The truth is there was nothing she wanted more than to spend every night with him. Emma smiled, but it didn’t quite reach her eyes; leaning forward she placed her hands on the pirate’s shoulders and pulled him closer to her face, hesitating just before they touched. Killian made up the rest of the distance and they kissed. The sights and sounds of the tavern faded away. The only feeling she had now were Killian’s tender yet dominating lips on hers and his hand caressing her hair, the only sound heard was the smacking of their lips and then panting breaths when they finally came up for air. Emma’s hands made their way along Killians thighs sliding up to his chest slowly and delicately. Killian had a wide smile on his face, not a hint of a smirk, knowing in his heart this kind of passion would not be short lived, Killian leaned in again for more.
“It didn’t work” She mumbled deflated.
“What?”
“Captain Hook” A angry man yelled from behind, grabbing Killian’s shoulder pulling him from Emma’s embrace.
The man didn’t let go and pulled Killian closer to him; his expression aggravated. Killian was frustrated looking around to see all his comrades drunk and occupied themselves, unable to assist. This stranger picked the wrong time to start a fight, facing a drunk and annoyed Captain Hook. The hate that burned in his heart would easily spark a bar brawl. However, on this occasion, he had other more enjoyable activities on his mind.
“Do you think we could settle this another time?” Hook said, his intimidating tone washed away with the rum.
“You slept with my wife,” The man yelled.
“I don’t have time for this,” Hook replied.
Killian sunk his hook into the man’s shoulder, pulling him closer and swiftly knocked him out with one punch. Leaving him on the floor where he dropped, Killian walked back to his seat, ignoring the concerned look of others in the tavern. Putting his hand to his head frowning, while he saw flashes of Emma and himself walking through the forest and kissing on a hilltop came to the forefront of his mind. Confusing the pirate, he lost his bearings for a moment. Turning back around to Emma, eager to continue their evening, Captain Hook found himself staring at a blank wall, his bar wench nowhere to be seen as searched the crowd with a frown.
“Lost one captain, that’s odd” Smee said, appearing from behind.
“Yes, it is,” Hook replied, perplexed.
He was certain there was a longing look in her eyes when she sat across from him. This had never happened to him before; how did he read the signals so wrong?. Smee shrugged his shoulders, turned and walked back to the rest of the Jolly Roger’s crew. Killian was still stumped, recalling the feeling of Emma’s hands on his vest and pockets, then began to frantically check every one of them, a scowl emerging on his face.
“Bloody, pickpocketing wench” he said.
Amused and embarrassed, Killian turned around quickly downing the last of his rum before heading to the door, without a word to his cohorts. As Captain Hook pulled the door handle, it blew open, slamming into the inside wall of the Tavern. Hook made his way out into the storming night, thunder rumbling loudly from above, overcoming the sound of the music from the Tavern.
--
Killian would typically be angry with anyone who stole from him, usually giving a swift beating for it. His eyes looked around the crowd, but there was no sign of the thieving bar wench. It was as if they were playing a game of tag and he was it. Thinking fast, the pirate climbed up onto a passer-by's carriage. Dangling with one foot off the edge he grabbed his scope looking for Emma in the distance. For a moment it seemed he’d really lost her forever and the dark sky was just a sign to head off to bed. Then something caught his eye, a little blonde speck in the distance, heading in the opposite direction to the carriage, Prompting Killian to leap off his transportation. The rum had well and truly gone to his head however Killian lost his balance. Falling into some barrels, he received concerned looks from those surrounding him. Noticing it was just another drunk they quickly went back to their tasks.
“Stop thief!” he yelled before realising the irony in that sentence. Chuckling to himself, he just shook it off and kept on after Emma.
Clearly hearing the shouts of Captain Hook only made Emma run faster, leaving the streets behind and running onto the forest trail. Looking behind her she could no longer see or hear anyone, slowing her pace she let out a sigh of relief as the village disappeared and she went deeper into the forest.
As a woman traveling alone Emma was cautious of her safety, listening carefully for any unusual sounds, but all she could hear was the thunder in the distance. All of the animals with more sense than any person were safely hidden away in their burrow or nest, so it immediately caught her attention when she heard the loud snap of a twig. She was no longer alone; Captain Hook's ability to sneak up on Emma after consuming so much rum had depleted. Emma grabbed a large branch from the forest floor and took position behind a large oak tree, ready to strike him. The sound of rustling feet was getting closer, clearly the legs carrying those feet were not at normal walking pace he must be inebriated. Sighing Emma dropped the branch, unable to follow through with her attempt to knock the pirate off his feet.
Surprising her from behind, Captain Hook grabbed her waist and pulled her close. A hook held up against her throat. Emma now faced an intimidating man whose aura was dangerous and wild. She was stumbling on her words not really expecting to see him again so soon, or with his body propped up against hers.
“Captain Hook I…” she began to say.
“Uh, uh now this is very bad form,” he interrupted.
“I’m sorry, but I needed to do that,” she replied, looking somewhat embarrassed.
With an arrogant swagger, he let go of his hold on her looking at her, his eyebrow cocked. He was intrigued.
“I know people like you, taking what you need from those who can spare it, but you made one mistake, no one steals from me” he finished; his words in somewhat of a slur given his drunken state.
“You don’t know me Captain,” Emma replied.
“I know it’s not wise to steal from a pirate,” Killian shot back.
In a huff, Emma’s hand dove into her coin purse, pulled out ten or so gold coins and a small locket. She handed back what belonged to him, her expression oddly apologetic and guilty. She turned away from him and continued into the forest, no real explanation provided. A thunderous noise came from above, rumbling a warning of the continuing storm. The sky was dark as coal, not a star could be seen for miles, the only light now in the sky was lightning in the distance, slowly creeping toward their location. The soaring wind was thrashing Emma’s hair up into the skies while she struggled to hold it in place.
“Why did you take this?” A frustrated Hook yelled over the storm.
Looking at the simple locket he wasn’t sure it was worth anything at all, it would only hold sentimental value at most. Now he was curious what on earth did Emma want with a locket that didn’t even open, he wasn’t even sure if he remembered where he got it.
“Because I’m an idiot” she said defeated. “I believed it could save us.”
“How did you even know about it?” he persisted.
“Someone told me. Why are you still following me after you got your items back?” she asked.
“You don’t get to ask the questions. Why are you venturing into the endless darkness?” he inquired, trying to keep up with Emma’s fast pace.
“I have something I must do,” she cryptically replied.
“It can’t wait until the storm passes?” he questioned, not able to stop himself from being concerned for Emma’s safety.
“No, I need to this, before it’s too late”
“You are mad women!”
“And yet, you’re still following me” she replied with a smirk, looking back at him.
“You’re a curious lass, and a determined one that’s for sure.”
“I know, I’ve got less time than I thought, to finish this,” she said, thinking back to Killian heading off to Neverland in the morning, maybe never to return.
“You’ve got someone out there, you're trying to save them?”
“Yeah..” she said, it came out in a croak.
“Well, can I offer my services on your journey?”
Emma stopped in her tracks confused by this statement, Captain Hook wasn’t a man who usually helped strangers, without anything to gain. The man that Emma knew, Killian Jones, was finding his way to the surface once more, here to help Emma save himself and he didn’t even know it. Emma's surprise made it impossible for her to respond for a moment, her mouth gaped open in awe, at the man she loved.
“I must admit though, I’m a little jealous,” he said.
Emma laughed at his comment, but the sound was quickly overcome by a louder crack of lightning that directly struck a nearby tree. This caused it to spark and set fire, sending bits of bark in every direction while the gale force winds began to blow through the valley. The gusting winds making it hard to even stand upright, they both carefully stepped closer to a nearby rockface for cover.
“The storms worse than what was predicted?” Emma said, alarmed.
“That is exactly what I’ve been trying to say”
“I’m so sorry”
Emma’s hood flew from her grasp and the captain could see her guilty expression and offered comfort, resting his hand on her shoulder. His expression was forgiving knowing they both made the decision to come out here, he did not have to follow her. The winds continued to soar small bits of debris flying everywhere while the pair stood still against the cliff, hoping to not be struck by anything.
“Watch out!” he yelled.
Killian swung his arm out and wrapped it around Emma’s waist, leaping sideways into a slim gap in the rockface beside them, just before the tree fell. It landed on the ground right where Emma was standing, the impact surely would have crushed anyone in its path. Emma looked towards him bewildered by this act of heroism, hopefully seeing something she recognised in her Killian now. He grunted, the slim gap leaving barely enough room for Killians arms to stretch out, there was not another soul around to assist them, no sound but the winds tearing through the valley and the fallen tree was now blocking the only exit. Emma rested her head against the cavern wall in defeat, regretting having consumed so much alcohol at the Tavern. Now responsible for dragging Captain Hook into critical danger, their clothing soaked from the rain, they were already shivering.
“Thank you for saving my life.”
“I despise the thought of not ending you myself,”
The strain in his voice gave him away, she simply laughed and shook her head, there was warmth in the way they looked into each other’s eyes. Their fingertips touched as they stood side by side in the crevice. As uncomfortable as their position was, it was keeping them alive, they stood in mostly silence as an hour went by, waiting out the storm.
“This isn’t how I pictured this evening going” he said.
“Really, because my plan for the night is being executed perfectly” she replied sarcastically.
“You don’t hang out in crevices often then?”
“No, but I don’t mind the company”
“Neither do I”
The captain’s annoyance with Emma’s thievery had well and truly faded, just like the harrowing winds would eventually dissipate. Emma peered into the distance squinting her eyes, moving her head up and down charting the stars and other familiar landmarks, but it was difficult from this viewpoint. Looking through the gap in front of her, judging whether it was safe to walk into the storm, and find a place to rest for the night. Thunder, lightning and rain continued not far from their location, as they turned their heads towards each other.
“We're going to have to move,” Emma remarked.
“That seems obvious love, but I don’t know of any safe havens nearby.”
“I may know of one” she said, as she attempted to move the tree blocking their path.
“Need a hand?” he asked, holding out his Hook.
“Ha, ha. Very funny.”
“I find in times like this, it’s best to try and laugh,”
Captain Hook tried his best to help Emma move the tree, but it was difficult from his position cramped up against the wall just behind her, he couldn’t even reach it. Emma had an idea though, it would require Killians assistance and she looked back at him with a smile as the idea came to her. Luckily the winds had somewhat pushed the tree trunk away from their exit, while they waited, but it still needed to be a big shove to clear their path enough to slip out.
“I’m thinking this job requires more force, than a hand”
Killian got the idea giving Emma a bit of leverage room, by squishing up as best he could into the crevice, but the gap got slimmer the deeper in he went. Arching himself against the rock, holding Emma up so she could lift her feet from the ground and push the tree trunk out of the path.
“On three,” he said.
“One, two,” she said.
“THREE!” he yelled.
Emma kicked both her legs up against the trunk with as much force as she could, while Killian held her upright and pushed her forwards. Forcing the trunk outwards just enough for it to roll down a small incline and out of there way. They made their way out of the rock face and let out a sigh of relief, noticing the gale force winds had calmed for the moment. Thinking it best to walk through what seemed to be the eye of the storm, Emma moved quickly while Killian followed closely behind, the rains still coming down in a drizzle.
In her haist Emma’s cloak got caught on one of the branches, her forward motion caused the tie holding it together at her neck to rip and fall from her shoulders, blowing away in the wind and getting lost in the darkness. As she turned toward Killian, he could see the white cloth of her dress was practically translucent. He swallowed hard and tried to avert his eyes, following Emma’s steps.
“Emma, do you want to borrow my coat?”
“I’ll be fine Captain, shelters not much further”
Eventually they made their way to a hill, the fastest way to their destination, was to make their way over it. Emma was first to make go, grabbing hold of a tree root to pull herself up, but it snapped off as she got to the top. Emma leaned back down, and offered Killian a hand to boost himself up the muddy hillside, but it wasn't enough, and Killian slipped. Emma managed to hold onto him by grabbing onto a nearby tree to sturdy herself, but the quick motion caused some mud to flick up onto the Captain's face. Instinctively, once Killian had safely reached the top, Emma wiped the slimy mud that splashed onto his cheek before they continued onward.
“I hope you’re not leading me astray,”
“I would never do that, I know how you dislike rain storms, our destination is not that far away” Then she realised her slip of the tongue.
“How is it that you know more about me than my taste in rum?” He asked, maybe the alcohol was making it difficult for him to make sense of her comment, he thought. How would she know that?
“What? I- I don’t! Uh, this is the first time we’ve met!” she quickly stuttered.
“No, no, you said I don't like rain storms, how would you know that?”
“You're drunk,”
Moving quickly ahead to get away from the captain's questioning. In her haste she walked off in the wrong direction, before backtracking and turning east towards the mountains in the distance.
“Don’t you know the way?” he asked.
“Sort of… it’s more of an estimate” she replied, somewhat relieved the subject had been changed.
“Great, I feel safer already,” Killian said, throwing his arms up in defeat.
Emma shook her head, lifted a long skirt from her heels and continued into the darkness, closely followed by the captain. The rain was coming down in a drizzle as the lightning flared in the distance, lighting their path. After walking for about ten minutes, Emma began to shiver and picked up speed, hoping to get to a warm dry place soon, but noticed Killian wasn't keeping with her pace, so she slowed back down, not wanting to lose him in the storm. Fortunately, they did not have to travel much further. After another loud crack of thunder followed by lightning, the scene in front of them lit up, Emma stopped at a large tree at the side of the mountain and smiled wide.
“Finally!”
“Is this it?”
“Yes”
Killian looked perplexed as she started climbing the tree in front of them, then stopped when she reached a wide branch about three metres from the ground.
“Come up!” she instructed.
Killian sighed before following suit and climbed up the tree to find Emma grabbing a rope tied to a branch. Emma pulled tight, testing its integrity before swinging away, seemingly disappearing into the night, until the lightning flashed once more to reveal an opening in the mountain where a small structure stood. Killian was genuinely impressed, surveying his surroundings before grabbing the rope himself and swinging across to their home for the night.
--
“Quarters are tight,” Emma said.
As Captain Hook closed the door behind them and silence fell on the pair, they looked awkwardly at the single bed nestled in the alcove. To the right was a water pump and a small cupboard in the opposite corner. It wasn’t fancy or even nice, just shelter from the storm. Captain Hook looked at Emma with one eyebrow cocked, his earlier charm emerging once more. Killian smiled, walking around the entire space, his soaked through boots squeaking as he strutted around, dripping water everywhere.
“How rude of me,”
He proceeded to take off his coat and hang it on a hook mounted to the wall then removed his boots, placing them neatly underneath.
“It’s okay, this is a shelter,” she said.
“I guess, we better get some rest”
“I hope I left some spare blankets, I haven't been here in months”
“I’ve slept in much worse conditions, the floor is fine”
Emma shook her head walking to the cupboard hoping to find a spare blanket and pillow. The doors creaked open revealing only dust covered canned food, but nothing else.
“We’re in for a cold night” she said, just as another crack of thunder roared through the valley.
“There are other ways we can keep warm,” Killian remarked, coming towards Emma..
“Captain…” Emma started to say, but stopped when he reached his for coat.
He pulled a flask of rum from the inside pocket, uncorked it and took a swig before passing it to Emma.
“My mind doesn’t only focus on one thing,”
“So, two things then” she teased.
Taking a quick gulp, then another, Killian was impressed and smiled when she handed the flask back to him. Silence fell as the two seriously started feeling the reality of their situation, Emma’s plan had not worked, but fate was on her side. The time they had together now, Killian could fall in love all over again. The thunder still cracking loudly right above them and lightning periodically brightening the room, will make it impossible to sleep. They both stood by the window looking out into the storm they’d successfully escaped,
“The storm should pass by early morning.”
“You can tell that just by looking out the window?”
“I’m just observing how fast the clouds are moving.”
“Of course,”
She turned towards Killian looking at how thoroughly soaked his clothes were, the leather clinging more like a second skin, surely he would be very uncomfortable in them. Making every muscle more defined and alluring, until Emma noticed a tear in his leather pants and red droplets of blood dripping down Captain Hook's left leg.
“Captain, you're injured!”
“What?” He said looking down at his leg puzzled “must of scrapped it when I pulled us into the crevice”
Emma’s face went pale realising it wasn’t just alcohol affecting Killians movements, Emma pointed to the bed and Killian sat down as instructed, knowing by Emma’s expression not to argue. With not much to work with as far as medical supplies are concerned, Emma got down on her knees and began ripping the cloth from the bottom of her dress. Killian sat back against the wall trying to relax but was feeling a slight buzz from the alcohol. After completing her makeshift bandage, Emma tried to reach Killian's wound, but the tight, wet leather wouldn’t budge more than an inch.
“I can’t get to it.”
“Take off your pants” she commanded.
“I give the orders on my ship!” he replied.
The fact they were not on his ship wasn’t important, Emma needed to get to his cut before it got infected. Emma had an idea of just what he was itching for and just how to play her cards; this would work quite nicely into her plan to help him remember.
“Please Captain,” Emma said on her knees in front of him, “Pants off!”
Killian stood up unbuckling his belt and unzipping his fly, smirking at Emma her head was level with his waist. The pants peeled off slowly, the water causing the leather stick to his thighs and calves. He grunted in pain when the leather was peeled off the wound. Emma inspected a cut that spread across his left calf, letting out a sigh of relief before getting back up.
“It’s not too bad, just needs to be cleaned”
“You don’t have to do that” he said dismissively, leaning back slightly onto the bed removing his vest and shirt.
While Emma ignored Killian’s comment, she walked over to the flask of rum pulling the cork off and soaking her makeshift bandage in alcohol. Walking back over to Killian, she couldn’t help but admire the view, even while administering aid. His wet hair was longer than it seemed, almost covering his eyes, Killian’s usually tense demeanour dissipated as he relaxed and he was now closer to the man she knew. Emma must have been staring for a moment too long, because Killian interrupted her daydream.
“Still bleeding, lass.”
“Right, sorry.”
She got down on her knees once more, gently propping up his leg and wiping away the dirt from his wound with careful strokes. Killian winced slightly as Emma applied some pressure to his leg to stop the bleeding.
“Thank you.”
“Should have built this place with more storage.”
“You built this place?”
“A lifetime ago” she replied, as she stood up.
“Just enough room for one” he said with sadness in his tone, as he looked around the small space.
“You take the bed,”
Killian became somewhat modest in this moment and waited until getting under the sheet before shedding his soaked through underwear, knowing it was best to sleep naked, rather than keep any wet clothes on. Killian slid over to make room for Emma, but she wouldn’t move, just giving him a disapproving look as he backed up against the wall.
“Don’t be ridiculous, come to bed we can use each other’s bodies to warm up.”
Emma knew deep in her soul there was nothing she wanted more than to feel his bare skin against hers. Remembering exactly what it would feel like to be with him, but Killian didn’t and the doubt had been growing since their kiss in the Tavern. That he would never remember who he was, that the curse would remain and this would only end in a bittersweet goodbye.
“I’ve seen hypothermia take the lives of sailors in a week; we need to keep each other warm.” Desperation in his voice, appearing to want nothing more than to save this stubborn woman's life.
“Should have built a fireplace.”
“Focusing on the past won’t help us in the present, love.”
Emma perked up at Killians words, because he was right she was focusing on their past when that had been taken from them, she needed to embrace what was literally laid out in front of her now, even if it was for only one night. Lifting the sheet slightly, inviting her in with a tease of his thigh, it looked so cozy. Just the idea of lying next to him made her feel warmer. Emma got up from the floor with a smile and slight nod. Killian smirked knowing he’s won this battle, feeling a moment of pride, but it was inevitable.
“Head to toe?” Killian suggested, by his tone it was clear what he was really asking. Did Emma prefer missionary or was she willing to try something more?
“Whatever works best for you.”
She took off the remainder of the soaking wet dress and hung it next to Killian’s coat. Standing in her undergarments, Emma walked over to the bed slowly, without taking her eyes of Killian, Emma reached behind her, untying her corset, slowly letting everything fall to the floor. Killian stared at her in complete awe of the contours of her body; he was already feeling immensely better. She appreciated his chest looking so warm and inviting, his back propped up against the wall trying his best to make room for Emma. She stepped forward grabbing the covers with her fingertips before pausing with a smirk.
“I just thought you should know, sometimes I snore.”
“Come here, lass.”
“Aye, aye, Captain.”
Lying down, they only had two choices in the very limited space, to spoon or face each other. Any idea of leaving this encounter as something just for survival was fading fast. Now it was filled with a whole new world of possibilities. Propped up on their sides facing each other, the feelings that had been held in check throughout this journey came forward in a rush of adrenaline. Any pretence in this vulnerable situation was now gone. It was difficult to fight the intense attraction when they were trying to warm up to survive. Rubbing each other’s backs and arms, Emma rubbing his chest, Killian rubbing her hip, backside and thigh. As their bodies warmed up, their movements slowed down and became more intentional, more sensual. The lust has taken over.
“Emma…” he moaned.
“Yes Captain?”
Taking a moment, they just stared at each other, no words came that would sufficiently describe what Killian wanted to express, instead he placed a soft gentle kiss on her lips. Emma reciprocated, gradually increasing the intensity. Hands started to move, Killian grabbed her ass and squeezed, his kisses moving from her mouth to her cheeks and neck. Emma regretted walking out on their kiss in the tavern and was desperate for more, arching herself into him pushing him against the back wall, the world was fading away. There was no more storm, no more journey to complete; it was just the two of them. Emma arched herself even closer and could feel how much he wanted her.
They stopped to catch their breaths only for a moment before Killian began to kiss Emma’s neck again making his way down to her nipples. He worshiped every inch of her body, bringing her to one high with his tongue and another with his fingers, they went on like this for a while, moving to wherever their lust took them. The rain came down heavier than before the extreme downpour so loud, it quietened their thoughts and fears. The thunder and lightning going for another round rumbling above. This was far from Emma’s concerns as she felt Killians hard cock against her leg; it was clear, without saying a word, what she wanted. Killian obliged, lifting his leg over her, positioning himself and slowly entering her. They performed a dance as old as time. The single bed was cramped, but they made the best of it. Fingertips now burning against each other’s skin, every touch, every breath bringing them closer. Thrusting back and forth their cries of ecstasy were deafened by the storm, the moment could never last long enough.
“Remind me to pickpocket you again sometime.”
“Fool me once” he replied, before sliding over slightly back against the wall and catching his breath.
Laying in silence for a few minutes their bodies still closely entwined, enjoying the peaceful moment listening to the rain. The storm outside also seemed to have ended. All that was left were a few droplets of rain trickling down the window. Killian seemed unable to stay still, moving his arms into various positions.
“Do you usually sleep with this on?” Emma asked, sliding her finger across his hook, like she already knew the answer.
Emma imagined it would be akin to trying to sleep with her corset still on. Killian simply shook his head, but it was clear, part of him was somewhat ashamed. Emma made sure to snuff that out carefully and seductively unclipping the clasps. Slowly sliding the hook off his wrist as they looked into each other’s eyes. Then Emma began kissing the scars remaining where his hand once was. The whole process started again; Until they found themselves getting wet once more from perspiration as their bodies heated up. Emma couldn’t help but giggle slightly, unable to deny the irony as she felt Killian’s hot breath on her cheek.
“What’s so funny?”
Pushing his torso up over Emma with his hook. His chest just above her, she stroked it with her fingertips.
“Is there something wrong with my finding humour in this situation?”
“Usually a woman is moaning when I have her on her back, not laughing”
“There’s always a first for everything.”
Killian slowly slid his hand down Emma’s torso, his fingertips just grazing her skin tickling her lightly making her squirm. It was time to move away from giggling though, as Killian continued downward. He smiled as he saw Emma’s expression change after only a moment, from giggles she began to moan and sigh, he looked into her eyes deeply, he could see she was enjoying his handiwork. The Captain continued to pleasure Emma until she experienced another orgasm and then the both took another moment to catch their breath.
Laying on their sides, facing each other, both propping their heads up with an arm, wide smiles on their faces letting the happiness of the moment sink in. The captain's feelings overwhelmed him, he wasn't one to move so fast in a relationship, but he couldn’t let this end with just one night of bliss.
“Come with me?” He asked.
“To Neverland?”
Killian didn’t give a verbal response, just nodded as he stroked Emma’s hair lovingly.
“I couldn’t, I have…”
“Something you must do, that requires my locket?”
“Yes, it’s hard to explain”
“No need for explanations Swan”
Emma’s mouth gaped open experiencing a moment of shock, her heart racing, she placed her hand on Killian’s cheek.
“You remember?”
“What”
“I never told you my last name”
“You must have...” he paused thinking “what am I remembering?” he said confused his mind racing.
“Captain I must confess, we have meet before, in fact we know each other intimately, but you can’t remember”
“We kissed, by a hillside!” Killians mind raced as the flashes he saw in the Tavern earlier were more defined, there was an arch behind them in the memory, a ceremony taking place, then it went blank.
“Our wedding, before you were cursed by the dark one” She explained.
Captain Hook just stared at Emma, his expression bewildered, while she stepped out of the bed walking over to where his coat hung. Searching his pockets once more for the locket frantically. Emma took it over to Killian placing it in his hands, he looked at it closely, only noticing now that it’s engraved with their initials. Emma lay back down beside Killian under the covers once more, as he inspected the locket.
“I know it sounds crazy…”
The captain shook his head calming Emma, because everything she was saying made perfect sense to him.
“Since we kissed, I’ve had this unshakable feeling that our lips have met before!”
“I thought that kiss would break the curse, when the truth is maybe there is no such thing as true love” she said deflated knowing how much she cared for him, but wondered if he felt the same.
“But I am remembering something, the more time I spend with you, the more I feel like my true self”
“It didn’t work because you can’t remember who you are!”
“I’m remembering” He said, staring at Emma blissfully stroking her hair.
“I thought, if I found a way to open the locket, the curse would break”
“The locket, that’s why you stole it”
“Yeah I thought, I would take it up to lake nostos, that the magic there could help”
“It’s not going to work, unless you truly believe,” he said.
“I just started to believe; you were happier without me”
“Never” he said even with only their evening together, he knew without a doubt he loved her. “I have never felt more happiness, than I have this evening, that I can recall at least”
Emma's eyes watered and tears started streaming down her face, elated that she was wrong, that all she had to do was believe in and embrace their love to break this curse. Leaning into each other they kissed once more, this time it was significantly different, the love they felt was clear and true. The all-encompassing feeling of love had never faded for Killian, it was always there, but he couldn’t understand where it came from, all memories of Emma were blank gaps in his mind. By forgetting Emma he had forgotten who he was, now everything he had been feeling all evening was clear, it came out in a rush of passion as he held her close. Emma’s past, all the people that let her down, stopped her from believing that she could be loved so tenderly, that it could break a curse. Now all those doubts were gone, and they kissed passionately.
The locket quietly popped open revealing two wedding rings placed in the centre and a burst of white light expanded out. Killians face overwhelmed as all his memories returned to him and he looked over at Emma, all the recognition she was searching for in the Tavern was there, once more. They placed their rings back on elated that they were able to have there happily ever after.
“My Emma, you found me!”
“I’m sorry, it took so long”
“It’s ok, I got to fall in love with you, all over again”
“It was quite the experience, seeing the spark appear in your eyes”
“How did you know where I was?”
“I didn’t. The dark one took your memory, then locked me in a carriage that took me far away but I escaped and came looking for you, what about you, how did you re-join the Rogers crew?”
“I woke up in a tavern with no memories of the last few years, I assumed it was something to do with Pan, as the last thing I remembered was being in Neverland, that's why me and the crew were headed back there.”
“Killian, I’m so sorry, I couldn’t find you sooner, I travelled so far, went to so many ports.”
“What made you come to the tavern tonight?”
“It’s like you said, I had a feeling…”
“It was just where you needed to be.”
They continued their evening sheltering from the storm, ready to head back to their life together in Misthaven. Facing the dark one once more, knowing that he would never be powerful enough to destroy their love. This adventure, just another chapter in their story, of a love so strong it could break down walls and get a broken man to love again, in one night.

#6 in a series of fanart I have made/am in the process of making for the WONDERFUL Unlocked series by @totheendoftheworldortime
I am seriously addicted to this fic. In a total stalker type way. I won’t even pretend I am not a dirty little smut whore who LOVES that somebody invaded her thoughts and wrote a god damn fic about it.
I have created 6 7 pieces in total so far, and 4 5 of those are extremely NSFW.
The first, and possibly my favourite SFW piece for this series. The way the boys hug Emma has always been one of my favourite things about this fic because of the way they make her feel safe. The loving, boyish nature of Killian shines through here, with the more reserved but no less loving demeanour of Liam still as close and content as ever to observe the love before him. <3 <3 I’m sorry not sorry to die hard CS shippers who think i might have ruined the pancake scene lol
PLEASE do not crop, edit, claim as your own or do anything else that might be a little bit uncool. You can reblog to share with your friends, and tag anyone you know reads the fic as i am sure they would like to see it!
A massive thank you to the lovely @totheendoftheworldortime for giving me permission to do this! I really appreciate the opportunity to show you how much I love your fic!
I know I might also get inundated with requests here, but I LOVE making this fanart, so if you send me a snippet of your favourite scene from this fic, I’ll see what i can whip up :)

@totheendoftheworldortime right there with you. Usually, I get so embarrassed by twitter interactions between CSers and Adam, but this time I think he was well served.
Usually Adam ignores anyone with a good argument and only chooses to answer the most hysterical person who is making such outrageous claims it’s easy for him to refute and play dumb. I saw the whole exchange and this time he picked someone who ended up landing punch after punch, and making all the relevant points without losing the plot.
