~reread Blue flag again... (the shônen manga where the main male protagonists canonically END UP together but no one read it. -_- )
i think probably my favorite thing about ao no flag’s twist is that it didn’t ignore the fact that taichi was depressed. yeah he notes that the breakup spurred the depressive episode, but that’s bc he wasn’t reading ao no flag like the rest of us and watching himself spiral into anxiety and self-loathing during his boyhood years. it’s actually no surprise that he has a complete depressive breakdown after the breakup bc he quite literally made his relationship with futaba his north star in terms of existing.
and that was always gonna bite him in the ass bc it can’t always be “well why do you like me? what about me do you like?” taichi struggled to articulate why he even liked HIMSELF, much less futaba and touma. that bit never went away. i wouldn’t be surprised that once they really started getting into adulthood, taichi’s issues probably became more glaring. same with futaba’s! she still had so much more room to grow, and i think it’s fantastic that she continued to look up to touma and his quest to achieve his personal freedom. bc with how the manga ended in high school, the only one who walked out of that fuckass school free was touma.
but i attest that i still did not see touma and taichi getting married 😂 i knew futaba and taichi couldn’t last unless we completely ignored taichi’s deteriorating mental health, but i was genuinely shocked touma did, in fact, get his man. i also like to think their romantic relationship didn’t actually kick off until they were well into their late twenties. of all the characters, the one who needed the MOST time and help was really taichi. i think he took his time getting to his happy ending, but at least he got there. im so glad he got there.
Blue flag basically
and what if I start talking about the parallels between byler and toumatai (ao no flag)
