What the Heck Are We Doing?

It’s a good question. I think I have an answer, though.

I’m writing this a week before the first show of our second leg of the Jump Tour 2017. Tomorrow we’re going to be meeting in a house in West Ashley, SC, and start practicing. We have fun, practicing. We have fun when we get together. Since it’s the only time we really see each other, for us playing music is a really nice way to spend time with good friends.

There is no pressure from a record label or manager to be a band, and that makes me happy. But we have liked being a band again. After returning to old haunts like Cat’s Cradle and the Variety Playhouse, and after being a part of the High Water Festival, we felt like doing this could be something that was meaningful, even if only part-time. Being with our family of fans feels meaningful. You told us in April that if we kept doing this, you’d keep coming to see us, and we are going to hold you to that.

We know we can’t be on a Jump, Little Children Reunion Tour forever. We may have a lot of songs in our catalogue, but it’s still a catalogue written more than ten years ago. In order to move forward, we have to write new songs.

After April, we made a decision to try to write. And we’ve put together some bits and pieces, and also a little more than bits and pieces. The hard part is writing Jump, Little Children songs, because that’s a specific kind of song to us. A song that we can hear being played by the five of us.

We’re not going to force anything. If things click, great! If inspiration strikes, killer diller! If not, we will have given it a shot. There is no point in putting pressure on ourselves; it can’t be a drag. It has to be a blast. Maybe we’ll have something new to share next weekend, maybe not. There is a lot to do, this week: learning the entirety of Licorice Tea Demos and Buzz and every obscure “B-side” will take forever, right? ;)

I want to do a better job of letting everyone in on the fun. We’re not in Jay’s dark studio this time (but thank you, old Rutledge house - we’ll miss you!), so there will be more light for Live Feeds on Facebook. More room for filming us trying to remember parts and lyrics. More photos of five guys laughing at things that only they find funny. But that’s how it is with good friends, right?

So that’s what the heck we are doing, this week and next weekend, and maybe some other times, later. We’ll be having fun. Want to join?
