#kj reads foreigner#anyway it took a couple of books#for me to really get the events of the first one#since friendship does not track for atevi#and generational goals do#as soon as the phoenix reappears everyone is reevaluating#bren's loyalties#and he has *no idea* they're thinking about this#the book's an elaborate test of character#of which the result is everyone is convinced#he has whatever the human equivalent of man'chi#towards tabini#and ilisidi realizes he's honest and has chutzpah#and you get that lovely bit#when banichi and jago are ordered to relax security#and they are very upset but bound by man'chi#and the test of character also results#in bren getting a better handle on defining his mental health#which is...not good#but good that he's self aware
