IM ALIVE

Oh my god hi I am in fact alive

Had a very unexpected family incident occur at the end of last week and I’m only just getting back to my home state tonight

I’m gonna take the rest of the week to get sorted out and caught up at work. I’m planning on resuming normal posting by next Monday 5/18 at the latest. Thanks for sticking with me- I promise I’ll make it worth your while

How long after the mission do the ghouls keep MC under watch?

I can’t imagine the ghouls (especially Jin) would want to leave her alone for a while

She stays with Jin for three days after they return. Literally does not leave his room. The only person allowed to enter the room is Tohma and it’s only to deliver meals and any urgent updates. The Inspector sleeps a lot during those few days. Jin was right to gently demand she stay with him because if she’d been alone she was so out of it she wouldn’t have been eating frequently enough. They share his bed. She’s far too traumatized to care about what that means for “them.” All she knows is her body doesnt feel like hers still and sometimes it doesn’t even feel like she’s in her body, and that physically being able to feel Jin makes her feel better.

It’s quite possibly the softest Jin has ever been. Don’t get me wrong there’s pure unadulterated fury simmering just below the surface, and there are mountains being moved behind the scenes to ensure there’s justice done for his Inspector. But he mostly leaves those tasks to Tohma’s capable hands. His focus is on The Inspector. Revenge will come for those responsible eventually, but she needs him now. So that’s where he is. With her.

After The Inspector posts her unofficial mission report and learns exactly what Darkwick did to her, she goes to Obscuary. Jin very VERY reluctantly parts with her. He orders Luca to walk The Inspector to the Obs dorm. Jin channels his separation anxiety into carefully crafting the RUIN of the powers that be.

The Inspector disappears into Ed’s room for 2 days. Ed keeps Rui updated and is the one that goes to get her food and clears it after. Rui jokes half heartedly that it’s the most activity Ed’s done in decades. Romi and Haru are nightly visitors to the bar just to get whatever updates Rui has. They leave gifts for her too. Haru has a surprise talent for handicrafts and made her a stuffed Peekaboo plush (she cherishes it forever).

On day 5 since her return from the mission The Inspector returns to classes. All of the ghouls are keeping an eye on her waiting the other shoe to drop. Shes not back to normal, and she’s not pretending to be. She’s angry. She feels violated in ways she can’t fully wrap her head around. She’s angry. She’s angry. She’s angry.

The ghouls are worried she’s a time bomb just waiting to explode, but they should know her better than that. She may be vibrating with rage, but she’s not gonna blow up and waste that energy. No no no, she’s going to channel it into a chaotic force for destruction….. and well you saw how the campus retaliated…

…did you think that was coincidental? That it was by chance? That there weren’t seeds intentionally sown and strings carefully pulled? Embers don’t spontaneously burst into flame without someone stoking them…

Who’s that Ghoul?

TKDB is teasing the introduction of a new ghoul! And we have several candidates

This post lists the ghouls we know of but haven’t met, what we know about them, and their kanji and name meanings!

Given Name Surname

Mio Susuhara： 煤原未楼

Jo Kongoza：金剛座丈

Shion Genkai： 幻海シオン

Shiki [Unknown]： シキ

Yamato [Unknown]：倭

Candidate #1: Mio Susuhara

(I personally think the next ghoul they introduce will be Mio)

Confirmed FACTS:

A) he was in Dionysia

B) he designed Romeo’s super secret passage

C) he built Haru’s prosthetic

D) he invented the clockwork anomalies that we’ve seen….

At the Star Festival helping Haru manage his booth- this anomaly was later reported stolen

Opening up the cells of captured anomalies in a Darkwick containment facility according to reports (Tohma indicates this is the same one stolen from Haru)

In a flashback with Elias where he uses the clockwork anomaly to detect a room hidden by magical means and eavesdrop on the conversation within

E) he faced disciplinary action for “desertion” alongside Jo and Shion

F) he would’ve been a second year (with Kaito, Yuri, Jiro, and Towa)

G) he was give special permission to attend the Darkwick Gala

C) He is supposed to be a third year (same as Haru)

A) he was Elias’s vice captain

Candidate # 3: Shion Genkai

Confirmed FACTS:

A) he was in Dionysia

B) he was responsible for property damage at the casino and Haru covered the bill

C) he is the reason Haru and Taiga were at each others throats in their first two years

D) he had something to do with Haru losing his arm or needing a new prosthetic

E) Elias describes him as the perfect foil to [persistent] Taiga

F) he faced disciplinary action for “desertion” alongside Mio and Jo

Candidate #4: Shiki

Confirmed FACTS:

A) Rui is in contact with him still

B) he wasn’t a Clementia ghoul

C) he is very knowledgeable about black magic

Evidence-backed THEORIES:

A) he with assigned to Ultio

B) he was the same year as Elias (so he’s a 4th year)

Candidate #5: Yamato

Confirmed FACTS:

A) he didn’t get caught when the Dionysia ghouls did

B) he wasn’t assigned to Dionysia

C) he is somehow connected to Haku/Kagami family

D) The academy and Haku both know Yamato’s whereabouts

E) Haku and Yamato are required for calming the resident deities at Haku’s family’s temple

Evidence-backed THEORIES:

A) his surname is Inamori

B) he is or is closely tied to the white fox in Jabberwock

Confirmed FACTS:

A) between punishment by the institute or Enzo, Rui said the institute would be the lighter han

B) he has an old habit of taking punishment into his own hands

Evidence-backed THEORIES:

A) he was assigned to Ultio

B) he was the captain of Ultio [ep 21-22 flashback]

B) his surname is Natori

Confirmed FACTS:

A) Tohma believes information about his whereabouts are being deliberately hidden

THEORIES:

While looking for a confirmation of the kanji I had in my notes I came across this:

[Note: when I repeated the exercise with “Yamato Tokyo debunker” I got the same results. However, when I attempted to replicate this with the other ghoul currently identified with a mononym “Shiki Tokyo debunker” it did not produce any similar results]

THEORIES:

When looking for an episode number to use to find the kanji for his name I found this…

His name is written in Katakana and there are a multitude of possible kanji variations.

紫[purple] 音 [sound]

星[star] 穏 [calm peaceful gentle]

神 [god, deity] 音 [sound]

碧[blue green, jade green]

祉 [blessing] 穏 [calm peaceful gentle]

紫 [purple] 苑 [garden]

史 [history, record keeper] 温 [warm, gentle, mild]

海 [ocean] 音 [sound]

There's many more but these were the most popular

I think it's likely the second character is 音 [sound] just because that showed up in the most variations. As for the first character I really don't know

Yamato：倭

倭 - [Yamato] an old term for Japan or a winding path that continues far away

Yamato Takeru, was a Japanese folk hero and semi-legendary prince of the imperial dynasty, son of Emperor Keiko.

Prince Takeru slew his elder brother Prince Ousu. His father, Emperor Keiko, feared his brutal temperament.

To keep him at a distance, the emperor sent his son to defeat rebels. However, Takeru succeeded in defeating his enemies. The prince also defeated several deities.

He returned triumphant, but Emperor Keiko's mind was unchanged.

Sent once again to defeat rebels, Yamato Takeru grieved, "my father wishes I would die?" Princess Yamatohime-no-mikoto showed him compassion and lent him a holy sword named Ame no Murakumo no tsurugi (Kusanagi no tsurugi), which Susanoo, the brother god of Amaterasu, found in the body of the eight-headed great serpent, Yamata no Orochi.

In one incident, he was lured into a trap by a treacherous lord who tried to burn him alive in an open grassland. Desperately, Yamato Takeru used the Ame-no-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi to cut back the grass and remove fuel from the fire, but in doing so, he discovered that the sword enabled him to control the wind and cause it to move in the direction of his swing.

Taking advantage of this magic, Yamato Takeru used fire strikers, to enlarge the fire in the direction of the lord and his men. and he used the winds controlled by the sword to sweep the blaze toward them. In triumph, Yamato Takeru renamed the sword Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi ("Grass-Cutting Sword")

Yamato was also the name of the lead ship of her class of battleships built for the Imperial Japanese Navy shortly before World War Il. She and her sister ship, Musashi, were the heaviest and most powerfully armed battleships ever constructed.

Enzo： 淵造

造 - to make, build, construct, or craft

Enzo: founder of Ferrari

Shiki： シキ

I found 177 kanji variations for Shiki as a first name.

One of the most common recurring characters in the different variations of the name means aspiration, ambition or goal. Another reoccurring theme of meaning is knowledge, remembering, and record keeping. This seems to align with the few details about Shiki we get in Chapter 22 (being very knowledgeable about magic and symbols), but we really don't have enough to go on for any real speculation. Shiki can also refer to a kind of traditional poetry.

Shiki: Masaoka Shiki was a Meiji-era poet and author who played a pivotal role in modernizing Japanese haiku and tanka poetry

Shiki-öji translates to "Prince of Shikigami" and refers to the most potent and high-ranking type of shikigami in Japanese esoteric traditions. The Shiki-öji acts as a commanding spirit overseeing other shikigami and is used to defeat curses, banish evil spirits, and protect sacred spaces.

Shikigami（式神) (also read as Shiki-no-kami (式の神 )) is the term for a being from Japanese folklore. it is thought to be some sort of kami (Kami are the deities, divinities, spirits, mythological, spiritual, or natural phenomena that are venerated in the Shinto religion) the most elite practitioners could conjure a shikiõji (an exceptionally powerful type of shikigami) to ward off disasters or demons that cause sickness. Regular mystics could not attempt to summon it without risking losing control of it due to its oni-like nature.

Inamori: 稲荷社

稲- rice plant

荷 -lotus, carry or burden

社 - shrine

Inari Ōkami (Japanese: 稲荷大神), is the Japanese kami of foxes, fertility, rice, tea, sake, agriculture and industry, and general prosperity and worldly success,and is one of the principal kami of Shinto. The name Inari can be literally translated into "rice-bearer" . Alternatingly-represented as male and female . Inari's foxes, or kitsune, are pure white and act as their messengers but it is more likely that in ancient times the fox itself was revered as the kami of rice. She [Inari] descended from Heaven riding on a white fox. Because of her close association with kitsune, Inari is often believed to be a fox; The fox, magical gems, scrolls with divine writings, and the wish-fulfilling jewel are prominent symbols of Inari. Other common elements in depictions of Inari, and sometimes of their kitsune, include a sickle, a sheaf or sack of rice, and a sword.
