Part 1 Part 2
The night air was cold on your cheeks but that was not what got you shivering that night.
The tree blocking the road. The very same tree from all those years ago.
You couldn’t believe your eyes when you had to stop your bike after getting slightly off the main road and being met face to face with your worst nightmare. Again.
Just like the first time, you got here alone and by accident. But this time your fear came from a completely different place, this time you knew what you were getting yourself into. And that was possibly way worse.
“Fuck” you muttered under your breath, already steering the bike to turn around.
It was late and you knew what happened at night, you were positive the noise of your bike would only attract the creatures to you, so you decided it was better to turn it off and keep it hidden.
Trusting your knowledge of the woods you dragged your motorcycle to some bushes on top of a few solid boulders and hid it as well as you could, pausing to take a few items from your saddlebag before checking it was well hidden.
Trying to move as fast as you could without making excessive noise proved to be more difficult than you remembered, your smaller frame back then making it easier for you to slip through the woods, sorting out fallen branches as you went.
A lot had changed since then.
So you tried not to think too much about what this meant for you and kept going forward with the sole purpose of finding the township and get to some basement without getting caught by the monsters. The treeline seemed neverending as the weight on your backpack started to feel heavier, but you told yourself to keep going and just when you thought you wouldn’t make it, you saw it. Light. Just a little further and you would be face to face with the dinner.
But your luck came to an end when you heard the snap of a branch to your left.
As quickly as you could, you scanned the area and took out your military flare gun, pointing as you tried to run towards the light but just as you were a few meters away from the school building, you realized they were cutting your path.
You turned back, watching two creatures slowly walking towards you. You still remembered some of them but most of all you remembered the creepy smiling guy.
“Look who’s back!” he said, his smile getting bigger.
You steered your body away from the building door, so you could try and find a clearer path to safety.
“Didn’t know you monsters could talk, it would’ve been way more fun to be chased around for years if I had known” you answered, slowly retrieving a small axe you brought on the side pocket of your backpack.
Not waiting to let them respond, you pointed your gun towards the bride and shot her right between her eyes. You knew it wouldn’t kill them but the sound of her flesh melting as the flare burned a hole through her face was worth it. And you hoped it would also slow them down a little bit. But the other monster didn’t give you time to think much about your approach as he lunged towards you at full speed, showing his true face. You lifted your axe just in time to clash against his teeth, using your impulse to steer your body out of the way, but the increasing noise and lights inside of the school building caused your focus to shift for the tiniest bit, but it was enough for the creature to grab your shoulder through clawed fingers, digging in your flesh as it moved his hand far down your back but giving you enough time to reach into your holster and load another flare, pointed at his head and shot.
BOOM
The door behind you opened and just as fast a tall body was attached to your back, dragging you inside the building. You tried to fight it off, but you felt something tear in your shoulder and could just groan at the pain.
“Fuck, stop” a woman’s voice said, so close you could feel her ragged breath on the back of your neck. “I’m trying to help you”.
You huffed a laugh at that, not really stopping your movements but slowing down enough so she could close the door with a thump.
“A door will not hold them down” you muttered as she let go of you and you reached for yet another flare.
“Not the door, the talisman” she simply said.
“What?” you asked, disbelief written across your face as you stilled your movements.
And right at that moment you caught the first glimpse of her face. She was pretty. Her skin tanned, dark hair and sad, dark eyes.
Then she laughed but seeing your confused face she added.
“Sorry, that’s just not how most people react in their first night” she gave you a sympathetic smile, one you knew too well.
So, there were people here and they found some kind of... talisman?
“What about the talisman? How did you find it?” you asked.
She arched her eyebrows, clearly not expecting your eagerness to ask.
“What about them? Boyd found them in the woods one night and they keep us safe behind closed doors” she answered.
You moved closer to the window, moving the curtains out of the way only for your eyes to land on the smiling guy just outside, but this time there was no smile as his face was half blown up from the flare you just shot him.
“You really did a number on them, I’ve never seen someone doing this kind of damage on their first night” she smiled down at you, leaning against the wall as you let the curtains fall back down. “Now, I suggest you let me take a look at those wounds before we try to rest a bit, it’ll be dawn pretty soon and we’ll be able to check with the others”.
You slightly narrowed your eyes when you heard the word “others”, but exhaustion was starting to catch up on you and you were pretty sure this town had changed even more than you expected, so you gave the girl a serious look and just nodded once as you started putting your weapons back in your holster, ready to follow her down the hall she was guiding you to.
i so badly want to buy something but i'm really trying to stick to my nobuy. like nothing on my current wish list is interesting atm. i ended up buying a pack of money in township (i've been playing for 3 years i'm addicted atp)
maddox was quick to point out the bird that had landed on the pavement across from them. "that is a eastern bluebird." maybe his companion wasn't interested in another of his fun facts but too bad so sad! learning was fun! "it's new york's official state bird. and it's the first one i've seen in.. months." he considered the bird's appearance as a good omen. maybe it was the universe sending them a sign. or, maybe, the government had just gotten their shit together enough they were able to start sending drones out again.
"we still don't have geese but hey, this is something." sadly the former was probably a pretty easy target for any infected who caught sight of it. and even if those little assholes hissed and bit you maddox still felt bad for them.
