I had a dream last night that the Decemberists guy put out a new song that was him announcing the band was breaking up, but the song was also his like detailing his future career path, and it was an excruciatingly granular 13.5 minutes of him explaining to us in detail that he was going to become a world renowned marionette maker and like the steps he was going to take to complete this (step 1 was learn to spin flax to make his own cord, step 2 was learn whittling to create his own puppets, step 3 to make his own paints, etc etc. He was going for that vertical slice sort of thing) All the while someone was shouting in the background I DON'T WANNA BREAK UP and WHO'S GOING TO GET MY ACCORDION because apparently there was a custody battle happening for that?? But as it turned out the song was too much of a banger and people wouldn't let them quit and also he had like horrible arthritis in his hands that was preventing him from making the shit so they announced within the week that the band was actually back together and The Marionette Maker's Heart's Desire was like their new #1 hit

The Decemberists - Eli, the Barrow Boy 2005

The Decemberists are an American indie rockband from Portland, Oregon, formed in 2000. As of 2024, the band has released nine studio albums with their lyrics often focusing on historical incidents and folklore. Audience participation is a part of their live performances, typically during encores. The band stages whimsical reenactments of sea battles and other centuries-old events, typically of regional interest, or acts out songs with members of the crowd.

Picaresque is their third studio album, released in 2005. The word "picaresque" refers to a form of satirical prose originating in Spain, depicting realistically and often humorously the adventures of a low-born, roguish hero living by their wits in a corrupt society. To facilitate the creative process and avoid creative block, band members filled a used bike helmet with slips of paper listing strategies and ideas to try out. Non-traditional rock instruments used in the album's recording included an accordion and a hurdy-gurdy. The album was produced by Chris Walla, also the guitarist for the band Death Cab for Cutie.

From last night at the Ford Center on the University of Mississippi campus, here's a live performance of "Blue Magic," I song I wrote that was used in the Adventure Time episode "Winter Light." The tiny, blurry figure on the right of the screen is me playing accordion. Featuring Jon Langford (whose band the Mekons made an appearance in Distant Lands: Wizard City) and Kelly Hogan, the singer you may know as the blue ice fox with a string of pearls. The guitarist is Taylor... whose last name I will supply later. I'm old and can't remember! Kelly met him while mentoring a group (along with Jenny Conlee of the Decemberists, who played my accordion!) in the artists residency a few years ago for the Sarah Isom Center at the University of Mississippi.
