The Battle of Towton was fought on 29th March 1461. A Yorkist victory, Towton remains the bloodiest battle on English soil with 28000 casualties.
I’ve just made some alterations to this page on England’s bloodiest Battle. Towton will be the theme of my Masters dissertation so plenty of depth to it, with more to come.
My research will be on the social consequences of the Battle, rather than the fighting itself. With a large proportion of the Lancastrian nobility killed in the battle, or executed, there was a huge shift in landownership and the related management of large tracts of land. What was the impact of this and how did people react to their newly appointed overlords?

Considered by many the “largest and bloodiest battle ever fought on English soil,” approximately 28,000 men died on the field outside Towton, Yorkshire on March 29, 1461, and the rivers were said to have run red with blood for days afterward. The Battle of Towton was fought between the Lancaster and York factions during the War of the Roses, and the Yorkists’ decisive victory that day drove the remaining Lancastrian supporters into exile, allowing Edward IV to take the English throne. The battle was fought in the middle of a snowstorm on Palm Sunday, and at first the York faction was greatly outnumbered by the Lancaster forces. The strong winds favored the Yorkist archers, however, who were able to disrupt the Lancastrian lines while their enemies arrows fell short of the York lines. While hand-to-hand combat raged on for hours, the Yorkist army gained the upper hand when their ally the Duke of Norfolk arrived late with his army, and they routed the Lancastrian forces. The battle was immortalized in William Shakespeare’s Henry VI, part III. In Act II, scene 5, a father and son on opposing sides of the battle kill each other, not realizing their error until it is too late.
