ToZ-X rant

I was so looking forward to the second season of ToZ-X, but we're three episodes in and I'm...honestly, I'm disappointed in the writing ? The story wasn't the greatest aspect of the game, but I feel like if they had stuck to more of that story, fleshing it out and tweaking it into a cohesive whole it would be better than...whatever is happening here. Maybe I'm biased because I prefer Alisha to Rose, and while I understand it's important to flesh out Rose's character I just don't care about her? It could be that the game ruined her for me, or just that they've spent a lot of episodes shunting Sorey as the MC and he hasn't done much of anything. I can't remember why he's still travelling with Rose to be honest. She's not even his squire. Alisha is. At least in game she becomes his squire once Sorey and Alisha part ways and it's obvious Sorey can't fight alone all the time because of the way the game mechanics work... Ugh. I don't know. I'm not even sure what's going on and what the hell did they do to Sergei? Everyone is just so bloody serious in the anime that anytime there's a break in tension it just seems weird and outlandish to me. The game point of view is kind of tainted with Sorey's insane optimism so the world doesn't seem as shitty as it is... but the anime took the nitty gritty and amped it up to a thousand. And each episode is weirdly paced? Also what the fuck is with Dezel. Just what the fuck. At least we got to see Edna and Mikleo and Lailah in action? Rose wasn't even in any danger so Sorey should've been fighting with them but what the fuck ever. Ugh I just ...what is this anime right now? The new ED is boss though

I want to talk really briefly about the demographics of the Hyland army because I think it's somewhat significant that all the soldiers given voices and names on Alisha's side are women while all the ones you see on Landon's side are notably male. I just think it's interesting because these girls can hold their own. Ian is a skilled markswoman. Shiller wastes no time in protecting Alisha when the Rolance soldiers attack them. Rose would have killed the man she was after if Alisha hadn't stopped her, and the fact Alisha is able to stop her is also amazing, not to mention that until they're both distracted they're able to hold their own while outnumbered. And they're supposed to be the eventual victors; they're the ones painted as the morally right side in this anime, the ones with an unerring faith in humanity (mostly Alisha, but everyone who follows her is at least supporting this view). Meanwhile, Landon and his men are portrayed as excessively violent and reveling in that fact. I mean, Landon's smiling as he tells his men to hurt Alisha, and his men, while somewhat reluctant, don't protest his order to hurt a pair of girls. In any case, there's something unsettling about a bunch of men circling around two women, where one of them is injured and unable to fight. I don't know if ufotable meant for this to be the case, but it is strange that the demographics are so divided.

Ah it was there! It’s less lighthearted than in the game (Like seriously, Lailah’s all smiles even though they’re all in immediate peril and Mikleo makes this really funny face like “D: Lailah why”) but it was there right before Mikleo starts running towards Sorey and it’s the same line as in the game.

This isn’t as clear in the Funimation subs, but Sorey actually finishes Mikleo’s sentence right before he calls Mikleo’s true name.

like literally, “that kind of thing especially–” “–I know!”

or, using the Funimation subs slightly altered “He already–” “–Knows!”

It’s even better to think about this with the idea that outside of Prime Lord/Sub Lord pacts giving out your true name is incredibly intimate like these kids are finishing each other’s sentences and on top of that Sorey knows Mikleo’s true name already

I wish we could have like a small reaction from Lailah and Edna on that front hahaa like the tiny “Oh my!” from the game.

I kind of dislike the animation for hellions, including dragons, but I have to give them points for having Edna's reflection in Eizen's eye as she was falling LIKE CAN YOU MAKE MY HEART HURT MORE
