Been playing twilight princess again and I can never get over Rusl’s reaction to a transformed Link, it’s such a grazed over but gut wrenching part of the story.

Twilight Princess ft. Malink cause I’m obsessed with them

Day 13: Village

(RUSL AND LINK ARE FATHER SON I STFG IF SOEN WEIRD ASS SHIPPER COMES ALONG- I need the calm down)

“Rusl… do you know how Ordon started?” Link hugged his knees tight.

Rusl hummed looking at the sunset, wrapping an arm around Link’s shoulder, “three generations ago, a man took his wife and daughter here” he started “it was said that Faron Woods once held great magical properties…

Horse hooves clopped on the mud, a man walking next to her, a woman carrying a small baby in her gentle arms road on top of the horse.

Once they got through the dense forest, she dismounted, “oh Link this place is-“

“Amazing? Yeah I know”

“How did you find this village?”

“I grew up here, I’ve in that house. I figured sense we have Saria, we could start a village” he glides his hand along a tree, “will you do that with me Malon?”

“Yes” Malon kisses his cheek.

… Saria is your grandmother” Rusl sighed “however most of your family died when you were young”

“Ancestor” Link turned to look at Rus.

“The founder died how old?”

“32, he died in battle”

Link nods, then he leans into Rusl.

Weird thought but.....

Do you ever think Twilight took one look at Four and just went "I can trust him"? Not because Four is special or because he's trustworthy looking, but just because Twilight sees a bandannas and his first thought is Rusl, who is trustworthy, so he considers all people in bandannas trustworthy

For the ask game good sir - please tell me about “Bring Him Home” 🥹 specifically the segment with the line “Grief and worry mixed into gypsum and paint.” Because that paints such a good IMAGE in my mind omg

First of all I have to say thank you so much for asking about "Bring him Home" It's one of my fave pieces outside of the Zelink stuff I do and I'm really happy with how it turned out. The line you picked in particular is one of my all time favourites!

Also, before I continue I wanted to give a quick thanks to @zeldadiarist because she was a huge help when I was writing this piece. She knows more about art and art history than I ever will. She was truly instrumental in the creation of this fic and is a fantastic writer in her own right! Please everyone, if you love Zelink then do yourself a favour and check out her work, it's beautiful!

And now, without further ado

Something I wanted to do with "Bring him Home" was mirror Hyrule's current state with that of the Basilica. When Rusl first walks in I mention how it's fallen into neglect, pointing out the murals of the Goddesses and the stained glass windows. I really tried to highlight just how grand and beautiful this place would have been in it's heyday, and how broken it is now in comparison.

I wanted the reader to feel a little helpless. Rusl has come here for a reason, he's desperate for something and this is his last resort. A decayed place of worship, of sanctuary. Hyrule at war. Everything's at stake.

And it was imperative that I get that just right so that this section would have the impact I needed it to.

"Hylia… that’s what Shad had called her, right? The patron goddess of this land and it’s people. Sworn protector. Still standing tall and vigilant in the midst of a war, surrounded by decay. Her bright blue eyes looked flush with tears, her lips pressed together as if to force back a sob. Grief and worry mixed into gypsum and paint. Radiant and loving."

At the end of the aisle is a shrine to Hylia that has, somehow, survived the worst of the decay. She is the beating heart of the land and it's people, the fact that she still stands shows that Hyrule has not yet fallen.

The Princess has been captured (sacrificed herself by this point), the castle is sealed by a wall of Twilight Magic, and monsters roam the countryside. BUT! Hyrule still stands. All is not yet lost.

However there is another layer to this description. Rusl, as our perspective character, doesn't know Hylia ; Shad had to tell him her name. She isn't a part of daily life in Ordon as she in in Hyrule proper- to him, she is nothing more than a mural on a wall.

Of course, he understands that she is so much more than "Gypsum and Paint" that is why he's here after all. He's come to pray for his son's protection as he heads of into battle.

There was a section that I had to cut from the first draft that explored Rusl's thought process here, but it didn't flow with the rest of the story. To summarise, he's praying to a Goddess that he doesn't believe in because Link is Hylian. Everyone in Ordon is human, except for Link. Rusl believes that, separated from the Spirit Springs, Hylia is his last hope in his bid to protect his eldest son.

But she's still just paint on a wall.

He ends up breaking down, questioning if he has any real right to be here, begging on his hands and knees. He isn't one of her people so why should she care?

But she does care. She will always care. And by the end of the fic Rusl knows that and finds peace in the fact that his son will be protected.
