So, "Dancing with the Stars" has been making a push to herd its viewership on to twitter. They've been dropping the usual inducements as well as some new ones. Tweet them using their hashtags, and your tweet might be broadcast on national television. Vote via twitter, and influence which dance gets the results show encore.
Yes, it's a new way for the show to traumatically bond with its fans, but it's more than that too. The goal is to get viewers to tweet about DWTS while the show airs and in particular ways.
Last year, consumer information company Nielsen and microblogging platform Twitter announced the creation of a new marketing metric: the "Nielsen Twitter TV Rating."
"The Nielsen Twitter TV Rating will serve to complement Nielsen’s existing TV ratings, giving TV networks and advertisers the real-time metrics required to understand TV audience social activity."
The Nielsen Twitter TV Rating doesn't activate until Fall 2013. But television shows, including DWTS, are putting in the work now of testing strategies and trying to install new habits/behaviors in its viewers: an investment they hope will pay off once the new rating goes into effect.
It'll be interesting to see how television shapes itself in service of this new metric. In future DWTS seasons, look for the cast to include more celebrities with a high level of bona fide followers and quality engagement on twitter. Note to aspiring contestants, buying twitter followers won't be enough; that's a relatively easy thing to detect. (Sorry, Newt Gingrich.)
This new metric will probably lead viewers to feel more empowered in influencing how their favorite shows fare. There may be an uptick in new twitter users (as well as new multiple accounts from current users) as fans want their enthusiasm counted.
The sum result will be advertising/marketing ever more calibrated to our insecurities and desires. And isn't that the charming point of it all? ... to be coaxed into behaviors and purchases with such artful tenderness. It's almost like they care.
