Roland Aira TR-08: Remix, Not a Reissue, of 808 - But What Does That Mean? - Create Digital Music

Since a lot of my research focuses on mathematical modeling of the Roland TR-808, I am quite keen on seeing what Roland has next. Lots of folks have asked me to speculate on why Roland hasn't issued a proper reissue of the 808, and I always (tenuously) guessed that it had something to do with Roland's corporate culture or Ikutaro Kakehashi's personal vision. Reading Kakehashi's biography, it is very clear that his main passion is organs and organ music. He spends more time talking about a visit he once made to CCRMA than he does talking about drum machines and the 808.

But, here we are, with an 808 "remix" on the horizon. I'm real excited to see what comes of this. And if it drums up some interest in my research, well, that would be fine too.

Roland, it seems, is not interested in reissues. Each time the company has revisited its past classic models, it has reinterpreted those nameplates with new designs. And for lovers of the originals, that has caused mixed emotions.
