Singer-songwriter Jill Sobule Dies in House Fire
- “I hope her music, memory and legacy continue to live on and inspire others,” manager says
Singer-songwriter Jill Sobule was killed in a house fire May 1 in Minneapolis, her management said in a news release.
Sobule was 66; the cause of the fire was not given.
“Jill Sobule was a force of nature and human-rights advocate whose music is woven into our culture,” manager John Porter said.
“I was having so much fun working with her. … I hope her music, memory and legacy continue to live on and inspire others.”
Sobule had just come off tour opening for the Fixx, who were “absolutely devastated and shocked” by the news.
“(She) was so full of life and talent,” the band said. “Our hearts are broken. We will always miss her.”
Best known for her 1995 hit, “I Kissed a Girl,” Sobule recorded 12 albums and recently found success with her musical “F*ck 7th Grade.”
“With Jill Sobule, everything turned to magic,” Aaron Lee Tasjan said in a statement. “I would have followed her anywhere.”
Souble’s scheduled May 2 concert in Colorado is now an informal memorial; a formal memorial will be announced later, her management said.
“I’m devastated that our dear friend Jill Sobule is gone,” Tracy Bonham said in a statement.
“Taken way too soon. I’m honored and grateful that I got to make so much music with her. I’m grateful for all the laughs with her. Rest in peace, sweet Jill Sobule.”

me when I realize I unironically enjoy listening to the Blue Man Group's musical output:
“I'm hungry, I'm dirty, I'm losing my mind
Everything's fine!
I'm freezing, I'm starving, I'm bleeding to death
Everything's fine!”
