R.I.P. Jill Sobule
How’d we do this year lads? Did we get a good grade in music?
(shiny new tag game under the cut... I know I said chaos blogging when I first posted this... but it was too much chaos, so I'm making it more dash friendly, but the original post is in the notes and the rest is under the cut 💛)
Jill Sobule, whose 1995 hit 'I Kissed a Girl' is considered the first openly gay-themed song to crack the Billboard Top 20, died in a fire T

I Kissed a Girl - Jill Sobule (1995)
Just found out that Jill passed away today. She was one of my favorite singers of all time. She used to sing this song to end her shows.
Jill was one of the first and only artists who I ever saw in concert -- I saw her every time she came through my area, which was only about every 3 years or so, but at least 5 times since I first discovered her in my early twenties. The last time I saw her was in September 2024. She laughed, she joked, she took requests. She has local family and they always came to her shows and she always pointed them out and sometimes brought them on stage with her. She was absolutely, utterly fearless, in a way I really admired. She was proudly queer, proudly Jewish, proudly atheist, proudly leftist, and never anyone but herself.
I'm really sorry to hear she's gone.
Everyone is talking about the queer impact of I Kissed a Girl but I want to tell you all about one time my father and I went to see Jill Sobule. It was maybe five years ago and, like most of the shows we go to, it was in a church (folky acts from the 90’s always play in churches). Afterwards, my dad was like come on, I’ll get you a CD (which okay I have my own money and I was in my late 20’s but that’s fine) and when we went to get it signed, he so completely devolved into a fangirl that he forgot it was for me and accidentally got it signed for himself. I didn’t even say anything, it was so funny. My father is the most curmudgeonly northern New England emotionally unavailable man you can imagine. And he went to absolute pieces for Jill Sobule. And that’s what I’m gonna remember. With my CD that says “To Mitchell, Love Jill”
Also here’s the song that made me cry on the way home today (high school was hard for me):
