I wanted to take some pretty pictures to show my TBR library shelf right now, but my house is currently very much anti-pretty photos, so I decided to go with adequate photos.

First up, a couple of biographies of the kind known as “Misery Memoirs”. I’ve had people say they don’t know why anyone would want to read about all the awful things the poor kids went through, but to me these books give an insight into survivor psychology. It’s not that I like reading about horrible suffering, it’s that I have a particular interest in what it is within a psyche that helps them come through and reach a place where they can tell their story. This photo features a photobomb by my rescue dog Galahad.

Next up, anther area I’m interested in - forensic anthropology. I read a couple of Kathy Reichs books a while (okay, a decade... or more) back and recently decided to pick up some more modern crime novels, after going on a rather long Christie-binge. I’m picking them up where I can through the State Library so they’re not being read in order, but the stories are strong enough to stand alone anyway.

Next up, some new discoveries. As well as more recent crime, I decided to find some psychological drama/thriller type books and I was blown away by Caroline Overington’s The One Who Got Away. I’ve bought a couple of others and found even more from the library, and have been devouring them. Ditto Tracy Buchanan - I picked up a cheap deal on Kobo of her novel No Turning Back and after reading it had a desperate need to find more of her work.

Finally, there is a book I went back and forth with before checking it out. I’m by no means a Ripperologist, but I have read a lot of Ripper literature. I’ve read/watched some fictionalised Ripper stories, and sometimes the fiction stretches the facts a little too far for my comfort. But I decided to give it a go and reserve judgement because who knows, this one might be the one that nails it for me.

I’ll be going slowly through this little collection, as my fibro makes holding physical books difficult, and if I read too many (ie, three in a row) I suffer for weeks with the resulting hand pain. Thus I recently invested in a Kobo Aura so my poor hands can have a break and I can still devour stories! :)
