What is and isn't appropriate to veil with? I want to start veiling in church but I currently don't own a real one. Would a bandana work or does it have to be a garment that's specifically made for veiling?

This is a good post I made regarding veiling, though it doesn't speak of the specific materials that are allowed to be used.

But this question has a direct answer: anything that adequately covers your hair is sufficient for covering it. I know that's a circular answer but if it can cover your head/hair, then it can be used as a veil. For the sake of what's appropriate for Sunday Mass, I would highly suggest getting a scarf or chapel veil, as it is more appropriate. But, for daily Mass, I've definitely worn bandanas, and worn bandanas in my life since I cover my head outside of Church as well.

The having a chapel veil or scarf thing is more a question on modesty, than what is 'allowed'. It's allowed for someone who doesn't know better or who is unable to (such as the very young or infirmed) to not wear dress clothes at Sunday Mass. But for those who are Catholic, are not infirmed, or such, to dress appropriately for Mass, and in life in general, and it is my opinion that for women (particularly married women for the hair covering) to wear dresses or skirts/blouses for most/all situations but especially Mass.
