Do we fuck with the grad cap?
Important question for tradespeople!! (especially of the queer variety)
So I’m a trans guy, known for maybe a year and a half, been out to some people but not all for a couple months. I sort of pass (pre everything but I’ve confused quite a few people) but it’s pretty obvious that I’m at least queer in some capacity. I’m trying to get an electrical apprenticeship at the moment and while I know the trades are already a field that “toughens you up”, what is it like for trans guys/queer people in general? I’m prepared to get harassed and called some nasty shit, but having no real experience I’m looking for advice.
Finished filing assignment
I’ve also begun on the next one which is a bracelet with roughly 250 soldering points.
As a complete aside I also started on a little side project purely for fun.
A forged bronze bell (included early sound demo). I got to the rough polish before the weekend. I’ll polish it to a shine and hang it up somewhere on my bench.
Another One *Vine Boom*
I am not the only trans man in my class anymore. It is a little comforting. He's been offering me rides home since sometimes my partner is in an appointment or something similar and can't pick me up when we get out of class. For the sake of his anonymity I won"t go into a ton of detail. It is good to see however.
Our instructor was telling us about how the industry has been changing, and how much more diverse companies are trying to be now. I just hope he's right, and that what he said applies to me.
The biggest issue I'm having at the moment is I need to change my name, but I have the misfortune of living in a state where it is incredibly expensive. It's about $400 when everything is combined, and that's if the judge approves of the name change. If I get unlucky and get a judge that won't approve it, that will cost more. Thing is, that's a third of my rent. I don't have that sort of money. I was thinking of doing a gofundme or making art for people to raise the funds. I'm hoping having a legally changed name will save some awkward conversations and some headaches for whatever IT people would have to scratch their heads trying to change my name in a ticket system.
I found a company that has the early morning shifts I would want to work. I'm a morning person and like to get out mid afternoon. I'm also not trying to work a majority of my shift in the heat of the day. I'm going to apply but for the reasons I've listed above I'm hesitant. I'm also not sure how I'm going to manage two jobs and school. I'm sure I'll figure it out when I get to it.
Civil Engineering
As a survey tech/engineering tech in utility companies, highway departments, energy sector work, and construction I have seen the beautiful and marvelous things we can create to better society. I'm writing after reading more and more about the extensive and sophisticated tunneling that has been engineered under Gaza by Hamas. I'm writing to ask if the American Society of Civil Engineers would publicly denounce this perversion of the trade. As someone who takes enormous pride in the capacity to engineer systems to improve life I'd like to see ASCE and sibling organizations publish statements calling out the gross misuse of civil engineering in order to disrupt, terrorize and harm society by Hamas. Engineering and resources that could have helped make Gaza a healthier, more livable place, less conducive to extremist ideologies and doom. Engineering that could have laid water and sewer lines, gas pipes and electrical connections, better roads and walkways. Engineering that would have uplifted the masses of people now displaced or killed in fighting that didn't have to happen.
ASCE code of Ethics, Preamble:
Engineers govern their professional careers on the following fundamental principles:
+ create safe, resilient, and sustainable infrastructure;
+ treat all persons with respect, dignity, and fairness in a manner that fosters equitable participation without regard to personal identity;
+consider the current and anticipated needs of society; and
+ utilize their knowledge and skills to enhance the quality of life for humanity.

I've been trying to figure out a career for some time and it looks like I might … elliot saturn needs your support for please help me start my welding career
"I've been trying to figure out a career for some time and it looks like I might be able to get one in welding, I even seem to have some natural talent for it and am able to get a grant that covers most of the cost of training. though it only covers most of the cost and I really don't have much money myself so any help would be appreciated. The above photo is of my first attempt at welding with no prior training. from what I recall it was a TIG set up. It's not perfect but it came out better then expected which I hope serves to indicate that I would be a good fit for this and have potential. “
