When I was little I had a Soviet Union children’s book called A Topsy-Turvy Planet, by Nikolai Sladkov 1962, in translation from Russian with poor printing on rough paper and strange illustrations; it was fascinating. Describing a Space-Age visit to a strange planet all the things featured seemed bizarre - then in the final part they were each revealed to be true here on earth. And voilà! #melbournelife’s contribution: behold a monument to a number! The Eight Hour Day Monument, 1903 (moved here opposite #TradesHall from #SpringSt in 1924) commemorating Australia’s great contribution to work-life balance: 8hrs work, 8hrs sleep, 8hrs education/recreation (though still aspirational to so many) which started here in 1856.
