How we use some of our traditional handcrafting tools at the Cascade Handcrafted log yard. 🪵The Chisel on the left is used as a finishing tool for mortise and tenon, planing of door and window sills and notches.🪵The Gouge in the middle is used for carving, shaping, hollowing out and curved cuts. 🪵The Flaren on the right is used effectively on either side for planing, dressing and as a clean-up tool, rolling off the flared edge.

@papermonkeyism wanted to know how I get tiny hair thin details for most of my paintings. Answer: a hair! Or rather, a sable brush that tapers to a single hair point. This one is my cherished Winsor & Newton series 7, in a size 00. The other is a size 2, and I have had them for over a decade now. Someday I will get a size 4 and 6, but as you might guess, they are very expensive. (I am also pretty picky about brushes and like to examine them in hand before I buy. Quality control and all! Most stores don’t let you return brushes.)

Do you mind if I ask a few questions about the materials you use? One, are your watercolors tube, cake or liquid, two, how consistent is the quality you have with this brand and three, do you use a specific kind of brush? Sorry if my question is a little strange, but watercolors is one of the mediums I'm trying to currently teach myself and I'm just curious. Love your work a lot! Thanks.

I use Winsor and Newton’s artist line of watercolor pigments in tube form, which I keep in a regular ol’ plastic palette. I’ve found they always perform admirably for me, and as I’ve worked with them for years, I know what I’m getting into with each particular pigment. W&N is a very widely used brand, and their standards are pretty high!

For brushes, I use various kolinsky sable brushes: Winsor & Newton Series 7 (arguably the best and my personal favorites, but ridiculously pricey and difficult to acquire at times) but I have other brands, my other personal favorite being Escoda. Most of the names of the brush lines have worn off my Escodas so I can’t be terribly specific, but most of their higher grade brushes are quite good.

I still feel one of the most important aspects of watercolor is the paper, though: good pigments and good brushes will amount to nothing if you don’t have a satisfactory paper. I use Arches and Fabriano Artistico watercolor papers (again, pricey, but I know what I like) but you can do well with any mid-range 90+ lb weight watercolor paper. Canson Montval is hit and miss lately, but Strathmore makes a good one. Wet Canvas is a great forum to read from, they’ve got a TON of tips/discussions/etc. that are good to browse!
