Yesterday I went on two very interesting and very different guided tours. The first was at Canada House, the home of the Canadian High Commission in London. 

Tours of Canada House are free, but they only do them once a month on a Friday afternoon and there are only 20 places, so it’s not the easiest ticket to get hold of. It’s certainly worth the effort though.

The building, a former Pall Mall gentleman’s club, is stunning and all the meeting rooms, which are named after the provinces of Canada are full of art work local to that province. There is a lot  of interesting sculpture as well and they have a gallery with changing exhibitions (This has more regular public opening hours and is also free!)

I was most impressed by the carpets, they were just as beautiful as the pictures on the walls. I couldn’t really get any photos, because of the tables, chairs and people, but I found this pinterest page which has lots of pics of them;https://www.pinterest.co.uk/cmi_design/carpets-for-canada-house/ 

Another thing that impressed me was how light it was. They remodelled the interior of the building a few years ago and every room is light, open and welcoming (none of the dark wood that I expected from a grand old embassy) 

As they are located at the western side of Trafalgar Square, they hold a lot of events there and one of the newer additions to the building is a roof terrace with views over the square. They also have beehives up here and they give the honey away as gifts to important visitors. 

Canada House was not at all what I expected but it is a wonderful building and, if you are able to get a ticket, very much worth a visit.
