SHE  HUGGED  HER  SO  TIGHTLY ;  SHE  FEARED  HER  BONES  WOULD  BREAK .  amara  told  her  everything ,  about  her  father ,  and  how  he  raised  her .  he  taught  her  to  play  the  lyre ,  sing  their  song .  how  they  planted  a  garden  together ,  had  fresh  fruit  and  vegetables  to  eat  every  summer ,  and  enough  to  last  through  winter .  how  she’d  learned  to  cook ,  foods  that  she  wished  her  mother  could  taste ,  the  best  dishes ,  even  lady  persephone  said  so .  how   every  so  often  she  woke  to  her  father ,  sobbing  quietly  into  his  pillow  in  the  dead  of  night ,  and  she’d  crawl  to  him ,  they’d  curl  up  together ,  and  miss  her .  a  longing  so  fierce ,  it  send  amara  on  the  train . she  wanted  to  tell  her  mother  everything  she  could  at  once .  everything  that  had  passed  in  thirteen  years .  her  tongue  tripped  over  itself ,  over  and  over .  she  wanted –  she  wanted  it  to  be  like  they  never  parted ,  to  heal  the  wound  between  them .

HIS  GRIN  IS  INFECTIOUS .   he  runs  his  hands  down  her  shoulders ,  as  if  he  can’t  believe  his  luck ,  lifts  her  with  his  arms ,  holds  her  like  he’s  holding  the  world .  the  sound  of  his  laugh  indescribable ,  his  joy  complete .  he’ll  never  want  for  anything  else ,  he’ll  never  think  to  ask .  now  that  he  has  her ,  orpheus  wants  to  open  his  mouth  and  sing ,  a  thousand  choruses .  hundreds  of  melodies ,  straining  from  his  chest .  he  wants  to  kiss  the  soles  of  her  feet ,  the  palms  of  her  hands .  he  wants  to  know  every  inch  of  her ,  that  was  so  made  for  him .  

he  was  so  used  to  it  ever  only  being  him  and  mister  hermes .  he  thought  it  would  always  be  that  way ,  and  orpheus  figured  he  didn’t  mind .  mister  hermes  was  good  to  him , if  not  a  little  flighty .  but  that  was  the  way  with  the  world ,  these  days .  

not  with  eurydice ,  no .  he’d  follow  her  to  the  ends  of  the  earth .  it’ll  be  them ,  until  the  end  of  the  line .  he  won’t  let  this  one  good  thing   go .  flushed ,  like  a  boy ,  his  voice  quivers .

     AS  FAR  AS  SHE’S  CONCERNED , LIFE’S  NOTHING  MORE  THAN  A  GIANT  HANGOVER .  day  in  day  out  she  drinks  herself  silly ,  pours  out  glass  after  glass .  she’s  not  a  mean  drunk ,  but  she  is  a  loud  one ,  the  life  of  the  party ,  crass  and  bold ,  swearing  up  a  storm .   her  husband  should  see  her  now ,  tearing  up  the  bar .  but  even  if  he  has ,  he’s  already  turned  away ,  went  back  to  toiling  at  his  damned  mines .  that’s  why  it’s  a  shade  helping  her  stumble  home ,  making  sure  she  doesn’t  trip  as  she  staggers  forward .   where  is  he  ?  where  is  he  ?                                  “   –  don’t  you  worry  about  me ,  songbird . “

Icarus regarded the girl with some mild curiosity. Things tended to stay the same around here, for far too long. Frankly, it was a breath of fresh air just to see a face he didn’t recognize.
