[Geoff] week 10-11 Silicon mould
Due to the continued failure to make a silicone mould, I spent too much time during this week. I was living in the plaster room; thus, I could not handle other things at all.
First problem was that the silicon mould was not made to be thick enough. There was not enough space between the plaster mould and the object, so I ground the upper part of the plaster mould to make a bigger space and poured the silicon again. However, I failed again, and the result was the same as before. The wings of the hummingbird were not made properly.
Geoff suggested recreating the blanket and the plaster cap, and I got a lot of his help in this process. Therefore, at the third challenge, I finally got the right silicone mould.
For the next step, I needed to change the direction of the hummingbird to make another side mould. However, despite pouring the huge amount of silicone in it, moulds were not made accurately, and some sections of mould were too thin. Hence, I increased the amount of silicon by 200g and poured again in it.
But the result was same as before. I failed again. Even though I poured more silicone (I thought it would be thicker if I poured more silicone), the silicone mould still did not to be formed properly.
I asked Geoff for advice and he said that the silicon seemed to create air bubbles in the process of formation and the bubbles popped inside of the plaster mould. I made a small hole so that the inside air can escape out the silicon.
I tried recreating the silicone mould again, but seriously I started to become sickening of silicone.
Why does silicone things make me so hard?
I vowed not to use any equipment made of silicon for my baking or cooking.
Whatever, I recreated the silicone mould, and in this process, I increased the silicone amount slightly more than before because I thought it can make the thickness thicker than prior mould.
However, the thickness was not a matter of silicone amount. It was a problem that I did not know the exact problem because of my ignorance.
As a result, I waste a lot of silicon and what is worse the silicon I poured into the plaster mould began to flood out due to the broken section of the plaster mould. Geoff, who witnessed my silicone disaster, told me to stop pouring the silicone. And he suggested me that after the silicone became solidified, poured over it again.
The next day, after checking the inside condition through the hole, I poured silicone again.
I was finally able to make a silicone mould without a hole. However, I noticed that in the second pouring process, it made some obstacles on the surface of the silicone mould.
I did not know if I could get the right surface because of the obstacles. Hence, I paused the next step, and Geoff also said me to see and think it together on Monday during his class time.
I hope I can finish it successfully before submission. PLEASE, PLEASE~~!
