To Ranger Rai; …How ethical is it to train a Pokémon against a type they are weak too? To try and build up a resistance? My friend who recently been a trainer has mock battles with their Pokémon. One that surprised me was a double battle, Pidove and Roggenrola vs Blitzle and Timburr. The battle was pretty interesting since they’re trying to teach their Pokémon how to think for themselves. Anyway, my friend will stop a battle if they think the Pokémon are going too hard against one another.
I’m not a trainer myself, but I know you cannot avoid type disadvantage forever on a journey. What I am worried about is how this type of training will work when my friend takes on a pretty inexperienced Pokémon without another Pokémon on it’s level. Wouldn’t taking attacks hurt the Pokémon pretty badly?
This is a great question! Training is important for growing closer to your Pokémon as well as helping them get stronger not just in battles but in their natural growth.
Now even if you train exclusively against their weaknesses, there still will be things that are just natural weaknesses.
For example, if you swim everyday and become really fast and really strong, it still doesn't change the fact that you can drown.
If a Grass type fights a fire type every day, while it might not be as affected by burn damage, it still has a high chance of being damaged by fire.
Training to overcome or deal with those resistances are fine, but it doesn't mean you need to exclusively train against them, perhaps you'll learn a lot by battling similar types, or Pokémon you're strong against as well.
You need to be well rounded, and not just specialty.
