SO... do you headcannon anyone in horizons as autistic?
OH BOY DO I
so dot is the most obvious choice. there is no universe in which she is not autistic to me. this is one of my strongest dot headcanons actually and one of the main reasons i enjoy her as a character. there are so many reasons for this i could go on endlessly but i'll just list a few big ones here
her extreme passion for her interests at a disregard for almost everything else & her ability to self teach those topics (not to mention her interests have to do with computing)
her difficulties with food overlap a lot with food sensitivities autistic people often have, also her latching onto donuts as a sort of samefood after finally trying them once
the tendency to wear loose, comfortable clothes and more recently she has complained while wearing tighter clothes (the orange academy school uniform) so it's not just that she prefers loose fabric, she also is put off by the alternative. girl your sensory problems
irritable outbursts when struggling to articulate herself/make herself understood
her connection with kanuchan (tinkatink) felt really neurodivergent to me. she wasn't offput by her behavior, even after stealing her prop mic, and was immediately able to understand her when no one else could or was willing to. not sure how to articulate this one right now but i hope you see what i mean
her tendency to sit cross legged and lean over herself reminds me a lot of my personal autistic tendency to need a pressure/weighted feeling while i sit or have body parts touching
social exhaustion, the need to be alone sometimes even when she cares
the list genuinely goes on i have to stop myself LOL
as for other characters,
so for liko i'm more loose about the headcanon, it's definitely more of me projecting than her being overtly autistic in canon but i still think it lines up if u wanna view her that way. i'm autistic and i personally relate to liko a lot becauseee
she is giving hyperempathy autism to me. the way she is overly empathetic and compassionate to her own detriment and yet still has to have her hand held through articulating & dealing with that or putting the logical parts of empathy together
the way she absolutely fucking Explodes with excitement sometimes
the way in which she relates to cats, and her whole thing about having a hard time getting other people to understand her. these two things go hand in hand
there's something neurodivergent about her trying to connect with sprigatito by studying her and writing notes about her behavior lol
while this is kind of just on the account of her being an anime character and a protagonist at that, liko's facial expressions and body language can be pretty exaggerated sometimes which reminds me of my own body language, i'm cartoonishly animated in real life often LOL
so like basically dot is so obviously autistic to me it's like breathing but for liko it's kind of a hc i apply to her for projection purposes & fun but i think it's reasonable
and lastly so i'm not just talking about solely liko and dot for the millionth time,
ORIO!! honestly we don't even know that much about orio but the one episode where she was helping pokeball lady i forget the name of fix her machine. the really narrow attention to detail/seeing the smaller parts instead of the bigger picture. also her expertise in engineering contrasted with her struggling with tasks outside of that (like when she was trying to sew holes in the brave asagi and for the life of her could not do it so she called murdock for help lol)
and actually one more - while i don't necessarily headcanon amethio as autistic, i think it's a fun headcanon/au idea to not only give him a redemption arc but an autism unmasking arc at the same time. representation for all my repressed autistics out there. in my mind
thanks for asking i'm so autistic about horizons so of course i headcanon them with autism too JOISJOIFD
Fast orio sketch I did for a break
I wanted to compile some of the headcanons I have for the adult members of the Rising Volt Tacklers into one place, so here it is, simple and sweet.
Friede:
— He's 33 when the series starts, and was 23 when he met Cap and ended up forming the Rising Volt Tacklers.
— He's claustrophobic, though it's not severe; he can handle being in average sized rooms with the door closed, and in tents. But if it was something the size of, say, a closet, his phobia would be triggered.
— He knows how to, and enjoys playing, the acoustic guitar. It's not uncommon for him to play for the crew at night when they're all relaxing and having a good time, letting the others make up words to whatever random melodies he plays.
— He's a thrill-seeker / adrenaline junkie, naturally drawn to things like skydiving or spelunking in caves specifically noted to be dangerous. However, he toned down this behavior a lot when the kids came on board, since he didn't want to negatively influence them.
— He has a tattoo of the Rising Volt Tacklers' symbol, on his chest above his heart. This is both because he feels that traveling the world on the Brave Asagi is his one true calling in life, and also because he considers the crew to be his family.
— He insisted that Cap be on the title of the Brave Asagi as the primary owner. Cap signed the title with a paw print. Landau is the secondary owner (since it was originally his ship), Orio is third (since she built it), and Friede himself is fourth.
Orio:
— She's 33 when the series starts, and was 23 when she first built the Brave Asagi.
— She can drink every other adult crew member of the Rising Volt Tacklers under the table and has before, on several occasions.
— She has an excellent singing voice, though she doesn't think very much of it. She often sings while she's working on the ship or her other projects, or when Friede is playing his guitar and the rest of the crew is singing along.
— She's decent at styling hair, and helps the crew with haircuts and the like when they're far from any actual salon. When they were kids, she would dye hers and Friede's hair with kool-aid; with Friede's hair being white, they were able to color it any color of the rainbow, and one time tried all the colors of the rainbow at once. Orio's verdict: "He looked like we'd glued a clown wig to his head." She uses box dye to maintain her orange tips nowadays.
— She is the worst when it comes to resting, including and perhaps especially when she is sick. Mollie has had to threaten to strap her to her bed to force her to rest on multiple occasions, and Murdock threatened to drug her soup with drowsiness-inducing cold medication.
Mollie:
— She is 29 when the series starts, and was 20 when she joined the Rising Volt Tacklers.
— She is an excellent, nigh-unbeatable, poker player. Usually the other members of the crew are her victims, but when times have been tight financially and they had difficulty finding legitimate jobs, she has won the money they needed to get by through betting on cards.
— She started studying human medicine after joining the Rising Volt Tacklers, so that she could look after the other members of the crew in case anything happened. (Particularly Friede, given the risks he was prone to taking.) She's not as skilled at human medicine as she is at pokémon medicine, but she works hard to stay on top of her studies of both.
— Orio is the one who pierced her ears, at her request.
— Like Friede, she has genius level intelligence. Unlike Friede, she doesn't know this because she never took any tests to have it confirmed or denied.
Murdock:
— He's 36 when the series starts, and was in his late twenties when he joined the Rising Volt Tacklers.
— He and Blanca were raised by their grandmother, and he learned how to cook from her. He took on more and more of the cooking responsibilities as he got older, both to lift the burden from his grandmother, and also because he legitimately came to love it.
— He has studied dietary science in addition to the culinary arts, and this is something that he and Mollie often nerd out about together.
— While he can and will battle if need-be, he has never cared very much for it, because he doesn't like it when his pokémon get hurt. This is largely the reason why his rockruff is still a rockruff.
— He is very often the first to point out when another member of the crew is pushing themselves too hard. However, he is also prone to pushing himself too hard. He and Orio frequently call each other out on this.
episode 89
Do you think Friede's birthday came and went in the past year?
And how, for the past decade or so, Murdock would make Friede's favorite meal for dinner and, of course, bake him a birthday cake in his favorite flavor. (Along with a bunch of pokémon safe cupcakes, because it was important to Friede that all the pokémon on board get to join in the celebration, too.) Friede was never one to need a fuss over himself, but all birthdays were properly celebrated on the Brave Asagi and his was no exception. Murdock would make the food, Orio would handle the fireworks, and Mollie would make sure all pokémon were in tip top condition to celebrate with them. And Friede, of course, would make sure everyone was having a good time during the celebration, maybe by playing his guitar for them or having planned them landing somewhere fun for the day.
But when they were escaping Rakua, Friede was taken from them. He's lost, presumably dead. Some would say that dead people can't have birthdays, but for those who loved them, that doesn't stop the date on the calendar from being significant, or erase the feeling of missing something when decade long traditions aren't fulfilled.
So, do you think Friede's birthday came and went in the past year?
Current headcanons for Friede's and Orio's childhoods:
They grew up as next door neighbors in Vermilion City.
Orio's parents were in the shipping industry. Her father was a sailor, while her mother was an engineer down at the shipyard. (And, occasionally, the local Gym when Lt Surge blew the power again.) She had two younger twin sisters.
Friede's father was (and is) unknown. Friede was never told why his father wasn't around, only that he wasn't. His mother, who had inherited the house from her grandmother, resented that her (she felt) promising career as a trainer got cut short by her pregnancy. So as soon as Friede was old enough to be able to make cereal and sandwiches for himself (about four or five or so), she told him that she was going to the store . . . and then never came back.
Fortunately, Friede and Orio were already playmates by that time, and her parents weren't about to let him starve. Though Friede insisted he stay in his own house for when his mom came back, he ate many dinners at Orio's house, and her parents made sure that he stayed clothed and healthy.
(If one were to wonder if perhaps Friede's open door, "stay as long as you need" policy on the Brave Asagi had anything to do with how Orio's family gave that to him after his mom left, well . . . perhaps the idea is not so far off.)
When they were ten, Friede and Orio applied for (and received) their Trainer Licenses. They also received their first partner pokémon, albeit in different ways; Orio's father brought her a beldum from an overseas trip he took to Hoenn, while Friede applied for a starter pokémon from Professor Oak, who accepted his application and allowed him to choose a charmander.
The two planned to travel around Kanto together to collect badges, but Orio's mother received a job offer in Slateport City, Hoenn. Naturally, she wanted Orio to move there with the family, and Friede was invited . . . but he turned the offer down, wanting to explore Kanto first and see all that it had to offer, and promised to reunite with Orio someday.
("Are you sure you don't want to come?"
"Yeah, I'm sure. I want to investigate that haunted tower in Lavender Town. I heard that trainers who go in never come out. Doesn't that sound interesting?"
"Are you stupid?")
So Orio moved to Hoenn, where she accepted first a scholarship to the school in Rustboro City, and later an internship at Devon Corporation. That experience allowed her to get a job at the local shipyard, not because of her mother's experience there, but by her own merit. (She was actually hired to a higher position right off the bat; her mother was never so proud.)
As for Friede, well, he did collect the eight Kanto badges, though he had no desire to enter the League. (When asked why he collected the badges, then, he said, "Why not?") He did investigate Lavender Tower, and was only a little disappointed he and Char survived their sleepover. When he was sixteen, he took the entrance exam for a prestigious Kantonian university on a lark and passed with near perfect marks. He received a full ride, and it was there that he was taught and mentored by Lucca.
And the rest, as they say, is history.

The pilot’s cap on the ground was white with a black bill, and had a golden, winged emblem sewn into the front. It looked clean—dirty? It was dirty; it had scuff marks on the white fabric, and it was hard to look at. The longer Jule stared at it, the stronger an ache behind his eyes grew, not to mention his chest— He blinked as he looked back at his front, and found himself staring into the big, wet brown eyes of the pikachu clinging there. Oh. That was right. A pikachu had attacked him. That was where the pain in his chest was coming from. But where did the hat come from? The pikachu pressed its (his, the wagging tail had a blunt end) face into Jule’s chest, sniffing fiercely. Jule didn’t know where the hat had come from. But he also didn’t know where this pikachu had come from. There weren’t wild pikachu in the vicinity of Levincia, and they were in Levincia. Jule lived in Levincia. He was in Levincia because he lived in Levincia, and the pikachu was in Levincia because—because . . . ? “. . . found you!” Jule startled at the sudden voice, and as the pikachu dug his claws in deeper in response to the sudden movement, Jule looked up to find not one, but three teenagers suddenly standing very close to him. The one in the middle was a boy, with dark skin, red eyes and matching hair, and a . . . a . . . an evolved form of fuecoc—crocalor. A crocalor stood behind him. The boy’s grin took up his whole face, and like the pikachu his eyes were wet. To the boy’s right was a girl whose hair looked like . . . like . . . it changed forms, depending on the weather . . . not castform . . . grass-type, evolved from cheru—cherrim, that was it. It was cherrim. The girl’s hair looked like cherrim in its overcast form. The girl had cherrim hair, and a qua . . . quax . . . quaxwell standing beside her. And to the boy’s left was a girl with dark blue hair pulled into a bun and bright blue eyes, tears spilling down over her smile. A tall, green cat pokémon (meowsca . . . rada, meowscarada) stood beside her, looking every bit as shocked as the cherrim girl on the other side. All three of them—the cherrim girl, the boy, and the dark-haired girl—were staring at him, crowded too close to comfort. Jule took a step back, pausing when the back half of his foot tipped over the step behind him. “I can’t believe it,” the cherrim girl said. Her voice was muffled by the hands over her mouth. “It’s been so long, and no alerts had even pinged for here—” “That doesn’t matter now,” the boy said. His voice was loud; Jule’s head throbbed. “Because we did it, we finally did it!” A breathless laugh left him, a few tears finally slipping down his cheeks. “Finally . . .” “We finally found you,” the dark-haired girl said, her voice shaking through her smile. Her voice—she was the one who had spoken before, who had said . . . what did she say? Oh, right—she had said, “found you.” But that . . . didn’t make sense. Why would she have been looking for him? He recognized the species of pokémon the teenagers had with them (and looked like), but otherwise, he was as much a stranger to them as they were to him. So why . . . ? Jule looked down, and blinked as he once again registered the pikachu clinging to his chest. Oh. That was it. That had to be it. “Here,” Jule said, and clasped his hands around the pikachu’s middle as he removed him from his chest. Tried to, anyway; the pikachu’s claws held fast to his polo shirt, and pulled it right along with him. “He just came out of . . . take him.” “What?” the boy said, at the same time the pikachu demanded indignantly, “Pika?” “He’s yours,” Jule said, and he tried a little harder to dislodge the pikachu from his shirt. The pikachu did not let go.
