Well, I have a few lessons in here. Let me rattle them off
NEVER let your head get you. I had issues hitting my numbers. I let that get to my head. I started doubting, and even when I stopped letting my own inner demons get to me, I still had to fight out of that hole, and I think I let that still get me down.
Watch your pace. I was pretty consistent until the turn around, when I had a sudden burst of speed because I realized I could pick off three runner. That sudden burst of speed followed itself with a sudden drop and a very inconsistent second half (see below).
Cadence and Speed are correlated, at least for me. Lesson learned and reinforced (see below) but I don’t know how to work on that. The watch is too finicky to watch it closely.
GPS Watches are not accurate for fine tuned paces.
So let me break this down...
I went into the race unsure of myself. I had trouble in training runs holding anything under a 7-minute pace. I thought I was severely overtrained. That got to my head and I realized that this week. I think I got over it, but it takes a while to climb out of a hole of self-doubt. I started the race at a comfortable 6:40 - 6:50 pace for the first half. I hit the turnaround and had a half-mile surge of speed, which sapped energy I’d need for the hills (or “hills” for those of you not in Florida).
8 miles of the course was along the same path I run my long runs on, which meant I’m familiar with the elevation changes, however minor. This let me know what to expect, though I hadn’t quite hit them at this pace, so their effect was a little jarring. At least I sorta knew what I was getting myself into.
I need to step back from the sub 3-hour marathon at this point though, and reevaluate my pace. 3:05 is an easy shot, probably.
Oh, I did PR my 10K, I think... But I fell short of other PRs, including the half marathon. Whoomp Whoomp.
