I know I’ve read some empath!Roe fics but I feel like there should be fics about Gene being able to take away the pain of the wounded and accepting it onto himself. Like he doesn’t magically heal a physical wound, but he can take away some of the pain so that it’s more bearable. However, Gene is then forced to feel however much pain he takes away as if he were the one wounded.
He might not choose to take away all of the pain from a soldier who’d lost his leg because then it would feel like he’d lost his own leg. He might instead take on part of the pain though, especially when they’re low on morphine. And the pain would go away eventually, not quite as slowly as it would if a wound were to heal on its own, but it would for sure linger for a bit. In my mind he doesn’t do it very often until they’re very low on supplies ie Bastogne.
Gene would be feeling so much pain in Bastogne from all the wounds he’d taken the edge off of for the men. And maybe he’s also doing it so much because the pain is the only way for him to know he’s alive.
(cue the other boys finding out because of any number of reasons and there being lots of angst of course)
