Ventus:Nothing really, it’s silly.

Lauriam:Can’t be too silly if your are frowning.

Ventus:Heh, got me there. It’s just, everyone else is really great at something. Leading, planning, fighting, I’m none of that. What makes me special?

Lauriam:Huh, you’re right. That is a silly thing to frown about.

Ventus:Hey! Not what I wanted to hear!

Lauriam:It’s true. You don’t think you’re special. That’s silly. You got a gift like no other.

Ventus:Me?

Lauriam:Yeah. Your smile Ven, it’s your greatest gift.

Ventus:How is a smile a gift.

Lauriam:A smile, it lifts the heart. Tells everyone that things will be okay and can even raise spirits. Smiles are powerful things. A smile in a time of unrest is extremely powerful. I’ve seen you smile in just about any situation so far. It never fails to keep me going. Ephemera, Skuld, and Brain would tell you the same. We rely on that smile of yours Ven. It’s stronger than you think?

Ventus:I do all that...? Seriously?

Lauriam:Now why would I lie? I meant every word.

Ventus:.....*smiles* Lauriam, thanks. Your smile is pretty special too!

Lauriam:Haha, I don’t know about all that. My si- someone close to me, they had kinda like yours. Though hers was a clear sign of embarrassment. Still, it lifted my spirits.

Ventus:What does mine say?

Lauriam:What doesn’t it say!? It says you’re you.

Ventus:I’m me. Haha I kinda like that!

Lauriam:Of course you do. You’re simple.

Ventus:Hey!!!! Well yours says you’re too direct!

Lauriam:Haha yep!

So, I’ve been thinking about that Vanitas scene in the Keyblade Graveyard again, and at first, I was annoyed at series staple Bad Writing™. When Ventus completely reversed the position he held a few minutes ago (”then why don’t you go back where you came from”) to empathizing with Vanitas. On reflection, though Ventus only starts being nice to Vanitas when Sora shows up. Aqua doesn’t care about Vanitas, but Sora’s been through this ‘you not me’ thing before. Even so, Ventus’ opinion going into the fight was consistent with his prior hate of his dark half. He only changed his tune when Sora showed up.
