TRAITOR’S FACE MAJOR SPOILERS IN THIS ASK

Technically, Katara first used Bloodbending while investigating the Pakku Connection in Chapter 50. However, the later Bloodbending in the 'Bastion' fortress is one of the major climaxes in her character arc and where she makes the art her own.

As with most things in Traitor's Face, I wanted to do something different with Bloodbending than the cartoon. Rather than just making it a manifestation of her darker side, I was looking to explore the fandom's interest in it as a force for good. I came up with its role in the plot before the actual meaning to Katara's character, but after a few planning iterations, it kind of became a metaphor for the darker feelings she was stuck with as a result of various traumas.

Like her feelings, Bloodbending can be dangerous to her, but when used with control and in appropriate situations, it can be a source of power, both as a weapon and a way of healing. That's a bit simplistic, but that's why I say it's "kind of" a metaphor- the metaphor itself isn't made clear in the story and is really just an inspiration for how I portray it. What does matter is the way in which Katara responds to her discovery, not embracing it or being glad for the trauma that led her to it, but making use of what she's discovered while recognizing how dangerous it can be. That emotional journey is the climax of her overall character arc, so rather than having her just get over her decade-long imprisonment, I have her achieve a union with Bloodbending by getting to know both its helpful and ugly sides.

Despite being a secondary character, I really strove to make Katara matter to Traitor's Face in a way her fans would enjoy, because I didn't want to do her dirty so that I could hand her role over to Mai.

Probably when the truth about Ozai was revealed in Traitor’s Face. That was easily one of the greatest twist I’ve ever encountered, and I mean ever, not just in fan fiction.

Thank you! I came up with the basics of the idea independently of Traitor's Face, and then proceeded to never mention it in the hopes that I'd find a use for it. However, sometimes I wonder if it's too good a reveal, since there's still another 23 chapters to go after that and I'm not sure anything else in the story lives up to it. Perhaps it should have been its own story and climax? On the other hand, striving to get the big ending to match it really did get me to bring my best game to the task, resulting in everything being elevated. IMO, anyway.

I'm still amazed only one person guessed the truth- and then every other reader proceeded to miss the review where that person revealed the whole thing, so everyone else who reviewed was surprised.
