I’m always thinking up head canon for trans drow in Menzoberranzan because it’s not fully established yet and we have trans drow in an official campaign book

Trans and non binary fans I need help with this one give me feedback I know I’m not only one thinking about this. Share yours or flag anything in mine.

Trans affirming Menzo

So in the realms Greenwood did set it up that homophobia doesn’t exist. So it would be pretty messed up if transphobia existed.

So I like to think given Menzo has sexist and strict gender roles/schools that Lolth or her handmaidens turn up at birth to gender reveal so the matron mothers don’t enrol them into the wrong school. That kid is not going to Arach-Tinilith he’s actually your third born son….Like I think Lolth wouldn’t care if a matron mother was a trans woman drow either. Long as Lolth gets worshipped and chaos happens and her city rules are still enforced.

It sticking in me because it would make Jarlaxles failed sacrifice more interesting. As Yvonnel wasn’t sure why Jax was spared, if Lolth revealed trans drow would Yvonnel suspect Jax was trans for a while after the sacrifice failed in her eyes. Did this give Jarlaxle a more open and non-conforming nature, since despite knowing he’s cis, he was raised in a way that broke gender norms in menzo in his eyes and he experienced how silly the sexist gender restrictive system was in childhood.

Like anyone that pushes boundaries of lolth strict gender roles creates a break down with priestesses because they can’t align it with their worldview

Triel: if your not the first born son, youre a daughter put on this dress and pray to lolth

lil Jax: okay!

Triel: wait…Lolth doesn’t seem to be responding to your prayers, go back to boy clothes and hair styles…

Lil Jax shrugs and goes to comply

Triel: wait! That would make you the third born son but we can’t sacrifice you… by lolth what are the rules?!

Lil Jax: So what can I wear?

Triel: …I don’t know wear whatever, long as Lolth is happy

Lil Jax grins and pushes boundaries what he can wear further, inventing non conformity and breaking gender stereotypes

I have no idea how non-binary or non jarlaxle non-conforming drow would fit in this though. Maybe they’re the drow smiths but idk would Lolth box them in like other genders. Also what happens to intersex drow.

The non accepting Menzo

At first I did fall into trope of Menzo being unaccepting place and thought what if fallen houses would become secret trans enclaves. The best places to grab gender affirming gear and hide them. I did think that the ruins of House Oblodra in my head cannon would be a permanent hang out spot where trans drow can meet and be themselves. Or transition safely before returning. Gromph telling people it’s a haunted dangerous place is to protect it because he performs the arcane transition and introduces them to Jarlaxle who hires them for Bregan D’eathe. I’d rather there be acceptance but there’s part of this I like to build an oc around. I dunno. Share your lore!

my named Tav in BG3 is a ranger/rogue named Mærz of House Tav'Stra

he's a Trans drow from Shazzraginth in the south-eastern Underdark, south-east of the Darklands - it's know as The Hanging City since it's built on the side of an abyss

his left ear twitches while thinking, and it flicks when noticing things and passing spot checks. he's vain and proud, like most drow, and wears garnet beds in his hair and ears.

he's prone to empty threats so he doesn't appear weak. he loves spicy and savory food and doesn't care much for sweat, but he is learning to like surface fruit.

he and Astarion are chaotic together, and each feeds into the vanity and mischief of the other. Mærz does defer to Gale since Gale does most of the cooking, and if Mærz behaves Gale tends to look the other way when he adds paprika to the pot.

he won't admit it, but but he's fascinated by Halsin
