okay so, if you're a cis person and you wanna reblog a "trans headcanons/interpretations are cool and should be defended" post then that is Cool and Good but can you please not preface any commentary with "it's okay if you headcanon them differently but"

because nobody, ever, in the history of fandom, genuinely needs to know that they can say that a character is cis. that is the default assumption, which is in fact the whole problem. when one kind of headcanon is totally ubiquitous and the other is violently stamped out at every turn, there is no need for this faux-neutral "all things are good" statement. it exists to pacify the fears of cis fans, and frankly they are not the ones being threatened.

maybe less "it's okay to have cis interpretations, but you have to tolerate trans ones too" and more "trans people will reclaim and re-interpret characters how ever they want, accept and support it"

cis fandom: no, not canon

trans person: i made a post about why they could be trans, could people read it and consider my viewpoint

cis fandom: naw it's bullshit

trans person: i did a fanart of this character as trans

cis fandom: ew

trans person: okay can me and my friends be left alone with this? we can post our art and headcanons and fics and if you don't like it you can just ignore it

cis fandom: god sjws clogging the tag with this shit go make your own tag

trans person: we made our own tags but they get flooded with triggering spam, can you call out other cis people so that this and other harassment doesn't happen as much?

cis fandom: omg some people don't have your headcanons you have to respect that! everyone gets hate sometimes!!

trans person: god i hate cis fandom

cis fandom: how coulD YOU SAY THis thing,, we RESPECt we let you have your non-canon bullshit WHY this, so mean, fucking trans people so mean, we gave you SO MUCH respect,,

You may think that the people of the internet are in dire need of your post about why a fictional character isn't trans and/or non-binary, but actually, No.

I had a bit more of a think: the reason "you can headcanon whatever you want and if anyone headcanons different you have to respect that" as a thing bothers me is that while it's well intentioned it doesn't actually work for the same reason that "umm don't you mean equality for everyone" doesn't work. it presumes that we start from a blank state that doesn't exist.

I've seen fandoms where the creators or the consensus has decided that way, and the thing is that it doesn't reduce the amount of shit people get for reading a character as trans or non-binary or a poc or any other marginalised group. What it does do is give people who have exclusively white, cis, straight, etc. headcanons an excuse to ignore how gross and worrying that is, and anyone who tries to point it out is now the bad guy.

tl;dr you can headcanon whatever you want but that doesn't mean your headcanons are immune to criticism or the general bullshit of society

Hey there! I remember a while back you posted a couple of headcanons about Jimmy Novak and you mentioned that one of them was that Jimmy was/is not cis. I've been thinking about this (I really like the idea and have been considering incorporating it into some fic) and I was wondering if you could clarify the nature of Jimmy's non cisness as you see it - do you think of him as a transman or as a MAAB individual who identifies outside the gender binary? Thanks!

Hi! I just archived binged all your Teen Wolf meta and found it pretty fascinating. I love your readings of Scott. I'm generally 'meh' on male leads, but Scott was more than tolerable in my watches and your posts helped solidify why I found him so likeable. I couldn't really find them in depth, but could you link or elaborate on your Kate feels and trans!readings of Scott/Lydia/Allison that pop up in S1 meta? I feel like there's so much ground to fic but my own knowledge and opinions are limited

i don't know if you saw this meta -- it's not in the teen wolf meta tag but 

wow trans feels i have them for all the characters. i really like trans-masculine scott (in a mostly non-binary way? like i like to imagine that he sometimes ids as "they" and other times as "he" and that's okay too and one of the ways being a werewolf helps is that wow bodies but then sometimes stiles says something like the she-wolf bit in season one and it hits him in the face because this could be an escape from all that body stuff) and i like  lydia as a transwoman and agender allison.

genderqueer boyd with their own pronouns they're still trying on, trying to find the one that fits right, trying to forge and hammer out in their poetry and their wolfed out snarls and out there in the sweat and grass and heart heavy hammer in their chest in the quidditch field -- but don't tell them they need to come out because that's not what they're there for.

and derek presenting as high femme with purple rouge on his cheekbones and purple glittery eye shadow on his eyes because purple was laura's color and he sometimes paints his nails but when the claws come out they get chipped and scuffed up but he likes them like that

as for kate feels? I feel that wow the narrative really gave her the short end of the stick! especially with peter? like i feel that the violence peter enacts towards women--lydia and melissa specifically--is normatized while kate's violence towards derek is punished in a way that peter's never is--so that already makes me kind of angry? 

and i don't want to excuse kate's actions because WOW WRONG but we get so much more backstory on peter and matt and even derek to an extent but we get absolutely zip on her other than that she's the bad guy?

and idk that pisses me off
