I think my favorite part of classic God of War—apart from the just turn my brain off and enjoy the fun gameplay aspect of it—is the being able to look into a world that’s just absolute angst and misery to live in. It’s sexist and male centered as hell (likely not intended to be a critique of the world, but making a sexist male centered game means that’s the state of the world depicted within as well), the “weak” die and the “strong” rule. Those that die likely are sent to Tartarus to suffer even more for whatever stupidly defined offenses send you to this world’s version of hell. Offenses, by the way, that we know is defined by Zeus when he claims ultimate power as he sends the Titans to Tartarus. So basically, if you don’t do what that tyrant says you get to enjoy eternal suffering in life and in death :] .
We see this with the Furies being the Oath Keepers, subjecting a person who makes an oath to torture for not keeping said oath, forever! Or in rare special cases allowing the ending of the torture if they come around to keeping said oath again. And wouldn’t you know it they favor the gods (moreso Zeus rlly) than anyone else :] . Also, they try to make a coup with their oaths and Ares to overthrow Zeus as top dog so they can become top dog themselves! This place is just ruled by power hungry back stabbing gods! And if you piss them off, you get to join the Hecatoncheires whose body was made a prison for not maintaining an unjust oath to a god! Am I the only one who sees that and see’s absolute angst and utter despair! I mean that set dressing was, in that game, made just for the purposes of looking cool. And don’t get me wrong, it does look cool. But when you look past the spectacle of classic GOW for a sec, and kill the author (which does NOT mean ignore politics. It can mean, in this instance, to merge the politics of the ppl who made the classic GOW games so sexist, into being a political fact of the world), what you get is a setting so depressing and so evil.
Not even its main protagonist is a good guy! He’s not necessarily 100% evil, but he partakes in the sexism reinforced by the male centered patriarchy of the world! And also, his quest to kill the gods has reckless effects on the state of the world and all the people living in it. Kratos is not an activist who wants to bring down the oppressors of the world and dismantle the oppressive system which has wronged him so, and free his fellow oppressed people’s. No. He just wants to kill all the gods whom have wronged him. When if he really did think about why those gods were in the position of power and the systems of power they created that hurt him so much, he may have been able to come to some kind of conclusion to strip them of their godly power and then kill them so that the sun wouldn’t be blot out and the sea’s wouldn’t rise so high. The only catharsis we get by the end of this brooding male fantasy is watching the fascist hating fascist kill all the other fascists and then himself; becoming the only “good” fascist a dead one. (I hope that sounds as cool as it does in my head lol).
And GOW portrays this awful world without really having to tell you “this is bad and you should hate the bad people.” It gives its antagonists and protagonist kick the dog moments such that they’re not necessarily kick the dog moments because they’re not used to measure morality for you the audience! It’s just a product of this world, everyone kicks dogs here! And you have to use your critical thinking skills to understand “yeah this shit is bad.” No hand holding morality for you! Gaze upon this fucked up world and enjoy how fucked up it is and figure out why it’s fucked up with your own understandings and judgement!
I hope to make a web comic in the future that puts a greater emphasis on this world as being fucked up and sexist and patriarchal and whatnot, rather than the sexism just being a happy “accident.” I think how I want to do this is make Kratos AFAB, and normally he/she/they would be subjugated to a women’s role, but some kind of prophecy or some such demands the worlds rules be broken (maybe Zeus foresees his death by a fellow god and that his only salvation is from this child growing up to be a warrior). I want to do this to portray the GOW games’ Kratos’ propensity for breaking the established rule of law just by existing, and showing that also in a gendered way as well. To see Kratos with the same physique and clothing style we know him for but with added tits that will surely piss off a male chud redditor who “doesn’t like politics forcefully shoved in their media” upon seeing a fem version of Kratos not becoming absolutely bimbofied.
To see that person be called a “man” and told to “man up” when forced to be a warrior, but to also have that male identity stripped away from her whenever he doesn’t perform as the gods wish. To depict someone whose own relationship with gender is complicated and non-binary/gender fluid in a world where such concepts aren’t named and are prohibited. And to depict that very same person as kind of a bad person for participating in the same evils that hurt them so. But he doesn’t really know better. Does anyone else see my vision here?
happy new year from me and my favorite old couple 💗
