WIP Weds 1/13/2021
My favorite day of the week, WIP Weds! Here is a snippet from my current WIP novel, called One of the Restless. It tells the story of a trans boy, Chris, whose father was the leader of a werewolf motorcycle gang. After his father was killed, Chris is sent to stay with warlock, fuck up, and fellow trans man Johnny.
If Eddie could just concentrate on the sandwiches, he would be fine. He could get himself under control. He could do what needed to be done, so long as he could finish making the sandwiches. He spread out stacks of bread on top of the bar and began slathering them with peanut butter and jelly.
Every time one of the members of the club passed too close to the bar, he shoved a sandwich into their hand and told them to eat it. Everyone needed to eat. He wanted to go and get Lily, make her eat something too, but Jae said that the kiddo wanted to be alone for a bit. He figured he’d go and get her after the meeting, maybe he’d take her out on the bike, get her whatever she wanted--candy, icecream, double bacon cheeseburger, whatever.
Eddie finished the PB&J’s and started making turkey sandwiches. More club members arrived, coming from all over the state, and were fed upon entry. After a while, people kept their distance from the bar, lest a third or fourth sandwich be foisted upon them. The stragglers finally arrived and still Eddie continued to make sandwiches. He just needed another minute. Then, he could walk into that room. Then, he would be ready.
Clive approached the bar.
“Here. Eat something,” Eddie said.
“I’ve eaten, everyone’s eaten, the entire northern half of the state has eaten,” Clive said. He placed a gentle hand on Eddie’s shoulder but Eddie quickly shook him off. “It’s time.”
Eddie nodded. He washed his hands in the rinse sink under the bar, then ran them--still damp--through his hair, slicking it back. “Yeah, okay.”
Eddie and Clive entered the boardroom, each touching the wolf insignia. The other senior members of the club did the same. Eddie sat down at his usual spot, to the right of Dev’s chair at the head of the table. Everyone left Dev’s chair empty. They all sat in silence for a moment.
