Something to consider: trans Munkustrap

Munkustrap was never too introspective with himself, really. Not that he’s in any way shallow… he’s a deep thinker for sure, and never one to make hasty decisions, but when it comes to analyzing his own feelings? Hardly any time for that. There’s just so much to be done, and besides, Munkustrap already knows everything he needs to know about himself: he’s the proud, strong son of Old Deuteronomy and the next leader of the Jellicles. What else is there to know?

When he becomes mates with Demeter, things start to change. Being with her awakens a sense of unique fulfillment and happiness in him that he didn’t even know was possible. She helps him see the world in a whole new way. And she makes him realize that something is still missing, but he doesn’t even know how to begin to figure out what it is.

What sets things off is a conversation they have one night as they’re walking the alleyways; Demeter makes some kind of casual remark about how tiresome it is to be a queen dealing with overenthusiastic suitors, and how sometimes she just thinks things must be so much easier as a tom.

Munkustrap is quick to inform her that being a tom isn’t really all it’s cracked up to be, actually. Who would want to be a tom when you could be a queen? Queens are so beautiful, so admirable, and the thought of being one makes Munkustrap feel so free. Sometimes being a tom feels like suffocating, but that’s just part of what being a tom is about, right? It’s about strength and love and protecting others and pain and putting yourself last and suffocating and suffocating and suffocating.

Demeter is at a loss for words for a minute while the gears turn in her head.. And she’s finally like, no, that’s not part of what being a tom is about. Not at all, and she knows because she talked to Mr. Mistoffelees about it at the last Jellicle Ball. It was there that Demeter found out Mr. Mistoffelees had grown up a queen, but realized his true self as an adolescent and was eventually able to conjure up powerful magic to change his body.

And Demeter can’t help but notice that the way Munkustrap waxes poetic about being a queen is the same way Mistoffelees spoke about being a tom. The way Munkustrap laments being a tom is the same way Mistoffelees talked about his experience as a queen.

It takes Munkustrap a good few days to process their conversation, but once Munk realizes that it’s allowed, that it’s possible to be a queen because she wants to be, because she just is one... she can’t stop thinking about it. She can’t stop thinking of herself as a queen, can’t stop the bristle she feels when others refer to her with “he” or “him.” She’s suddenly so acutely aware of every wrong pronoun and every gendered word and it hurts.

Her whole world is expanding, just like when she’d become mates with Demeter, but this time there’s a very raw sense of fear alongside the euphoria. It takes several more emotional conversations with Demeter for Munkustrap to come to a conclusion:

Munkustrap is, undoubtedly, a queen. And she’s ready for everyone to know it.

I can’t stop thinking about this song w trans Munkustrap 🥺 i could really see her having the type of dysphoria where it’s like, you’re just a kid and you don’t even REALIZE.. like, Munk spends a lot of her early kittenhood dreaming about being a mother; she’s fully convinced that she’ll be able to get pregnant when she’s older, and doesn’t see any real difference between her and the other female kittens. When she finds out she’s not going to be able to bear her own children she’s just completely devastated and ok yep there we go my heart’s officially broken now
