Stop being trans-exclusive y’all.
Just wondering did insurance pay for your top surgery? If yes, How did you get it covered if not for transgender reasons?
Nah, my insurance at the time had a trans-exclusion policy. The procedure was considered “cosmetic.”
I ended up paying entirely out of pocket.
Hello!! I just checked your tumblr out because I saw you liked a post of mine and I came across your insurance post that said those 9 states are supposed to provide trans related medical coverage. (If you can't help me nbd lol) but I have insurance through Illinois even thought I live in MA because my moms company is head quartered there and my coverage for T was denied so I just assumed surgery would be denied as well. Was this a fuck up do you think?
Thanks for getting in touch!
If your mom has insurance through her company, she is most likely not on a state insurance plan. Unfortunately, private insurers set their own standards… so it’s totally plausible that your claim was denied.
Those 9 states I mentioned only mandate state insurance companies provide trans-inclusive coverage… private insurance companies in those 9 states are unfortunately at liberty to do what they please!
If you live in MA, have you thought about applying for MassHealth? It’s probably more economical than your mom’s insurance plan. When I was on my mom’s insurance plan, it cost an arm and a leg to keep me on the private health-plan… with MassHealth, I pay nothing!
If that’s not an option, you can always get your T through a compounding pharmacy in Oregon called Stoheckers Pharmacy…. when I was on a private insurance plan with a trans-exclusion policy, I mail ordered my testosterone through Stroheckers and it cost less than $70 (including taxes, shipping, needles, syringes, and testosterone) for a several months supply.
I’d recommend figuring out why your claim was denied. Sometimes insurance companies require prior authorization- meaning your physician needs to explain why the prescription is medically necessary. Other times, private insurance companies have certain requirements- such as therapy- that you must meet before they will provide coverage!
Whatever the case, you’ve got options! Definitely figure out why the claim as denied. If it’s because your mom’s insurance company has a trans-exclusion policy, go from there. Consider paying for your testosterone out of pocket… or getting a new insurance plan that will cover surgery!
Don’t hesitate to get in touch with further questions. Stay cool and keep in touch.
