CONSULTATION APPOINTMENT (8/26/2022)
After waiting a brief period in the lobby, I was approached by man in casual street wear who introduced himself as the main TMS doctor.
Not going to lie, I was taken aback by the fact that this person was going to be my new doctor; not in a bad way, honestly I was pleasantly surprised and it did help me relax a bit.
He explained that he has an interning nurse practitioner that he was training and asked if it was okay if she did most of the question asking and I agreed.
He was of course in the room as well and did ask some questions of his own and gave me the rundown of the procedure.
But first, the intern asked me more in depth questions about my mental health state.
When did you start having depression?, what treatments have you tried?, questions about my family history with illness, suicidality questions (be prepared for that), what does it look like/feel like when I have a panic attack. These basic questions led to more in depth questions of my traumas, self harm history, eating disorders and drug use etc.
I was very open and honest but it did stur up some emotions so be prepared to talk about these things!
I mentioned a number of times my experience with chronic pain because I was told by my therapist to mention this as she was under the impression that they could target certain parts of my brain to help with this but that was untrue. The doctor explained that because anxiety triggers a lot of flare ups in chronic illness, the reduction of anxiety from TMS treatment did help them in that aspect but nothing beyond that.
Most of the questions asked were for my insurance company, as they had to submit proof of why i should have the treatments covered.
There was a brief run down of what an appointment would look like:
5 days a week, 36 sessions in total, around 7-8 weeks.
Each session would only last around 14 minutes.
Side effects to expect are headaches, possible heightened anxiety for the first week due to a lot of patients being anxious about having their brain messed with (but not because of the actual TMS treatment), possibly being fatigued but mostly because of the headaches.
He also said that most of the staff has experience on what these treatments feel like because they've had them done themselves, including him. That was very reassuring!
I was asked if I had any questions, I didn't have any.
My copay (I have decent insurance) was $25 dollar and they said to expect that copay for each visit.
I walked out of there a little rattled from digging up past traumas and feeling but otherwise pretty satisfied with how things went and felt properly listened too!
Now we wait for the pre-authorization from my insurance company and hopefully proceed forward.
