you know what as funny as the whole "prowl claiming bumblebee to be his best friend" is they do really fascinate me as a duo especially towards the tail end of IDW. bumblebee's put into this super awkward situation of being unable to reciprocate any of prowl's "best friend" sentiments, but it's not like prowl isn't aware of that-- it's obvious it's not a mutual "friendship" by any means, prowl probably knows he doesn't break top five on the list of most important people to bumblebee, but it's also part of their entire relationship, if that makes sense? bumblebee has generally served the role of a character friendly to everybody, being a common pick for stories involving cross-faction connections, unlikely friendship plotlines, etc, and he is genuine in caring about people, prowl included. the thing is, this doesn't put prowl in a special category or anything-- he's a coworker, sure, and somebody he's known for a very very long time-- but it's not like he holds prowl in a uniquely higher regard than like, ironhide or ratchet. if anything, bumblebee's opinion of him is probably lower relative to his other peers (considering their brief clash over their definitions of authority in bumblebee's spotlight and everything going on in RiD), but the uniqueness of it is sorta just. the fact bumblebee is sympathetic to prowl at all. again, though, this is more a commentary on bumblebee's character than any connection unique between the two. if anything, I'd maybe argue bumblebee disliking somebody would say more about the other person's character than if he did like them.
on the other hand, prowl considering bumblebee his best friend is definitely a far cry from the average relationship he has between his other peers. but I'd also say that it's less that prowl really likes bumblebee over everybody else that earns him the best friend title (THOUGH I'm not saying this isn't part of it or not true), and more like "bumblebee wins first place on the friendship ladder by default, which means that, literally speaking, he is prowl's best friend, sans the expected degree of emotional attachment and platonic commitment that's colloquial with the typical role".
this brings bumblebee, who does associate "best-friendery" with all the emotional stakes attached, into the awkward situation of being prowl's best friend-- or even, like, one of the only people even slightly willing to reconcile with him post-caminus. and he would know this! bumblebee knows he's practically the only wartime coworker still on good terms with prowl, and also the fact that prowl often uses bumblebee as a talking point for when people challenge his... social abilities? trustworthiness? reputation for reliability? I mean, it makes sense-- prowl's objective, argumentative way of conducting himself often puts him in scenarios where he has to reassure others his "correct" opinions have some kind of secondary support, or when he reasons that his disposition isn't totally unsustainable (because well, bumblebee is his friend, so he's not totally cold-hearted). using his "friendship" with bumblebee as a talking point is part of prowl reasoning his correctness to other people, yes, but it's also part of his self-reassurance deal, on a psychological-emotional level that prowl doesn't address but needs to maintain regardless. (example for this. we have seen what happens when prowl comes to realization his system of self-reassurance is fucked w/ everything in combiner wars)
WHICH. let me bring this to my original thought: makes bumblebee + prowl absurdly interesting post-IDW, speaking entirely theoretically now. considering how deeply intertwined prowl was with the politics of cybertron both before and after bumblebee's temporary death, I'd say post-ending prowl's kind of become an artifact of the political scene that bumblebee both was and is currently responsible for post-canon as a diplomat-esque figure (also considering there was never really any conclusion to the whole wanted fugitive thing before prowl got kidnapped by tarantulas and returned in the OP issues). prowl isn't reeally bumblebee's coworker anymore, at least not in the same way they used to be, and there's a difficult line to draw between considering prowl as a friend and considering prowl as an extension of his now-responsibilities. do I think there could be room for a story involving bumblebee redeeming prowl in the style of the starscream thing? err well. maybe. I haven't given it much thought, to be honest. I like to think prowl would go about it in a selfless/selfish sort of way, maybe via physically leaving to spare bumblebee the trouble of having to spend the rest of his career mitigating prowl's disagreements and reception, but this is more of me sharing my own hypothetical than anything...
also, just in case it came off differently: I dooo think bumblebee cares about prowl, and vice versa. because they're friends! of course. but also it's prowl, so that complicates everything. naturally. take this last panel set I think about a Lot as a finisher
