Cybertronica Anatomica Chapter 4: Senses
As Cybertronians embrace sensory upgrades as easily as alt mode kibble, it is difficult to categorize the limitations of their race when it comes to sensory experiences. One may have an upgrade that allows them to see into the infrared band but that is by no means proof that is the typical visual experience of Cybertronians as a whole. Nonetheless, there is a baseline without which a Transformer would be viewed as handicapped. These base senses are optic, audio, olfactory, tactile, short-range radio-wave transmission, electrical sensitivity, and magnetic sensitivity. A Transformer's visual sense can be split into two subcategories; their sight in root mode and their vision in vehicle mode. The head of a Cybertronian in root mode typically contains two cameras equally spaced to either side of the Dorsal vent though other specialist arrangements are possible. These cameras provide both direct depth perception and color vision. It is believed that the baseline Cybertronian optic provides vision closer to other mammals such as dogs and deer than humans because they didn't need strong contrast to pick out red berries from green leaves as our ancestors did but this is offset by their excellent night vision as well as sensory packages that can grant perception into the infrared and ultraviolet ranges. Another advantage the Cybertronian optic has over the human eye is the explicit ability to zoom on one particular area of focus. Most Cybertronic lifeforms that have partial mode alteration keep their heads in the same position in both modes so the vision in one is the same as the other. Transformers however have developed a need to cover their vulnerable heads when driving and are thus technically blind in alternate mode. Technically, because their highly developed radio transmission sense doubles as a sort of radar which grants them a panoramic sense of what is around them. The limitations of vehicle mode sensory packages ensure that Transformers transform into root mode when they need to give their full attention to something. Their audio sense has broader range than ours but leans closer to infrasound (sounds too low to be audible to us, not to be confused with the ultrasounds that are too high which dogs experience). Besides a rule of thumb that larger creatures hear lower sounds, this is an advantage on Cybertron to hear the rumbling of heavy machinery and the comings of electrical storms. Their olfactory and tactile senses are notably less developed than our own. Olfactory sensors are located in the vents throughout their body so they are excellent at picking up the direction of contaminants but their nonchemical method of energy gathering means it wasn't as important for them to be able to distinguish between the many smells that can tell whether food is rotten or not. Their sense of touch is made by an array of pressure, electricity, and thermal sensors underneath their chassis. The average Cybertronian transforming into a car or truck has an effective radio range of about 6 miles. This number increases as the Transformer increases in size until the Titans gain an effective range of approximately 30 miles. They are able to tune themselves into different ranges so they may either take the broad range as a whole or select a specific frequency range to concentrate on. This sense is held where the ears would be on a human face and is experienced similarly to how we experience sound. Prominent antennas mean they have slightly better receiving range than others of similar size. Magnetic and Capacitance sensitivity are combined into one understood sense similar to how pressure, temperature and voltage are all included as part of touch. This sense is held between the Dorsal Vent and the lower jaw and is experienced somewhat like taste or smell. Cybertronians are able to sense the conductivity and magnetism of metals around them helping them to identify the metallic nature of what they consume. There is one more channel that information passes through on the Cybertronian body though unlike the rest it is not to input new information from the environment. Every Transformer has a data cable and port through which they can directly transfer information from one into another. This is their secret to how they can learn new languages so quickly and be such social chameleons because once one has deciphered our internet or radio transmissions, they can pass it on to the others. It also provides a completely private mode of communication but there are two limitations here. First, information passed along this way is stored as memory as though it was read from an instructions manual. In the same way you can't seriously learn martial arts by reading about it online, Cybertronians put a lot of stock in actual experience over downloading when it comes to practical skills. Second, this is the biggest way to catch a computer virus. This is why Transformer's computers still have analog interfaces and there's a degree of trust involved in linking with someone; it's not something usually done between strangers.
